Anyone try these trim kits?

I was looking over at IkeaFans doing some research about built in microwaves (they often have some great retrofit ideas) - someone suggested a place that sells trim kits and also does custom trims. Has anyone had good luck with MicroTrim? My MIL now has her countertop microwave sitting in the untrimmed 2nd oven opening (above her oven) and it is pretty ugly - she has said that she wants to make it look better (the hole is quite a bit larger than the microwave) but I don't want to recommend this place unless I've seen some good reviews. Also, we have a 5 year old range that works just find, but for my next one I want to use a slide in (and am planning the backsplash with that in mind.) They sell a kit to cover the gap in back. Has anyone here tried that? We could always just cut some more butcher block instead, but I like the idea of a stainless kit with a stainless slide in.

Any experience with this place or with another place would be welcome. Also, if my MIL does get a kit, how does she "stablilize" her free standing microwave behind the trim so that it doesn't shift when opening and closing the door? Thanks!

we've got a trim kit around our micro and think it really 'dresses' it up even though it's not the built-in. We were afraid that if an appliance were to go bust first it would be the micro and didn't want the cost of replacing a built in. I don't know if this is the same company that made ours, but that would be my guess (ours is labeled as a kitchenaid). The appliance store said they use this company for their trim kits and they also do custom sizes (I started looking at them directly because our cabinet maker made the wrong size box, but he fixed it so we could use the standard KA trimkit). So, long story to get to my point is that I believe they are reputable, but i don't know how to install since ours was done by the appliance store!

I'm glad that yours looks good. Does anyone else have experience in mounting one themselves? Maybe I should ask this at IkeaFans?

Like the others wrote, the trim kit is just the "pretty shiny parts" that you see. Based on your description you want either a pressure-balanced or a thermostatic valve. The PB or TS valve will be a brass valve body. A chunk of metal. That gets buried in the wall. The trim kit has the chrome or nickel (or whatever) knob, lever, escutcheon plate, etc, the things you put your hands on to turn on the valve or change temperature. For changing out the valve, if you have access to the back of the wall that the valve is on, often times you can cut an access hole there, install the new valve, and patch the drywall. Easy. Many shower valves have large escutcheon plates (the flat "plate" shaped thing that goes against the wall to hide the hole in the wall) that can hide the hole made if you need to go through the tiled side. A very decent and affordable pressure-balanced valve is made by Symmons, the Temptrol series. They aren't the most gorgeous by any means, but they have been around forever and will last forever. I have a few in my own house. You can get the entire setup (valve body, shower head, tub faucet, and trim for $100-$150. You can go higher than that too. The version below is less than $100. They have "prettier versions" too. You can use the included shower head, or substitute one you already have. But it's an excellent valve, and whenever I've needed replacement parts they get sent for free, no questions asked. The Symmons escutcheon plate is large enough where you can go through the tiled wall, change the valve, and the escutcheon plate will hide the hole. No retiling required. Just another idea.

Has anyone used a trim kit w/ 36" freestanding fridge?

Electrolux Icon actually does sell a trim kit for their 36" freestanding side by side. But I don't want an Elux and their fridge is less than 69" tall, therefore the kit is a little too short to use with the other brands of SxS I'm considering (they are all between 70-72). I'd like to take this same idea and find a trim kit that can be used with another make/model. Basically, I want the look of a built-in without paying the price for one. It's a new build so I'm not bound by any existing measurements yet. But I will need to find out whether or not I can do this before I order my cabinets.

I just ordered a custom microwave trim kit from Micro Trim for my Kitchenaid microwave and it's great. I filled out their online order form, they called the next day for payment, and it arrived in a week. We easily installed it and viola, I have a built in microwave! The cost was about $110 including shipping. I received quotes on the Kitchenaid trim kit at $129, although it didn't fit my opening. The trim kit includes "runners" that your microwave sits in on the floor of your cabinet opening that keep the microwave from sliding around in the opening. I recommend Micro Trim!

I'll tell my MIL about it, and I'm sure that we could install it for her. It is making me rethink my countertop microwave! We are redoing a back hall into a dining nook, and I keep looking for somewhere to "hide" the microwave a bit more (I hate having it on the countertop, as our kitchen is so tiny.)
