99% finished under $20k kitchen!

We are 99% finished! All we need to do is the base moulding and back splash which will be done this weekend. We are doing a white subway tile.

We started this in January when temps got below zero here in NJ and our pipes froze. We were in the process of doing the mud/laundry room when this happened and had to put that room on hold to do the kitchen. I think I was the happiest person ever when those pipes froze!! Dh, a plumber, would have lived with our 1953 kitchen forever!!

We've owned the historic 1849 fieldstone house for 10 years. The house was at one time make into a 2 family house with renters renting both sides of the house. When we bought it we needed the room and made the house back into a 1 family home. Unfortunately, because the house is stone and most of the walls are 2 feet thick we are unable to change the layout of most rooms. The kitchen is 16x20 (the other kitchen was made into a mud/laundry room)

My budget was $10k and we were going to do most work ourselves. We did hire someone to do sheetrock/spackle for us because it's the one thing we both pretty much stink at doing. After gutting the kitchen, we realized our $10k budget was a dream. The floor boards were rotten out, Plaster walls were crumbling and our 4 week reno at $10k turned into a 22 week nightmare at $19k

silvergirl426--the kitchen is 14' x 14'. I toyed with adding more cabs, changing the layout, but nothing else felt better than was already there. I'm sure the layout gurus on this forum might have done differently, but it really functions well for me. I hate to feel crowded and cramped, so the open wall (where the dog bowls are), creates a feeling of space that feels very comfortable for me. oasisowner--my DH originally wanted bright blue countertops (!), but I talked him out of it and went neutral. I think we're both happy with the results, especially since the shelving is green. carp123--great minds think alike! I have been trying to figure out what to do above the fridge, if anything. I love wicker/rattan baskets, just trying to figure out what to put in them...I like everything to have a real function! momo7-thanks! It was a leap of faith, but I so love the Hawthorne..no regrets! AnnaA--yes, freeing! And I know just where everything is and what I have. I still have a lot of empty space in the drawers..just waiting to find the right organizers. mc15--ah, the hood...kind of a long story. It didn't exactly work out how I wanted. It originally hung down lower. It is a deep hood (24"), which I chose when we were going to put in a 10' wide window. But the window was too expensive, so we went to 9', but I forgot that the hood would no longer fit inside the window, enabling it to be pushed back further on the ceiling. So it is flush with the cabinet depth, which I love for capturing all of the steam/smoke. But when installed at the highest recommended height, it was too low for DH, who is 6' 2". So we had our contractor raise it to 76" high. It actually does work fine, it's just so loud now! But I'm having the contractor back to see if there's anything he can do about the loudness...it wasn't this loud when it was lower. I'm sure if we had bought a higher-end hood, it wouldn't be an issue. So, if no one in your family is tall, it would probably work at a normal height. We might go ahead in the future and have our contractor build something different for us...we'll see how it works going forward. gr8day--thanks for your kind words! CEFreeman--I bought the chairs (Restoration Hardware) shortly after moving in. Not sure if they actually go with the kitchen, but I absolutely love them, too. And I spent way too much money shipping them to us, so they're staying! I tell myself they coordinate well with the trees out the windows. ;) Thanks again, everyone!

I would mount the telly on an articulating arm underneath the upper cabinet closest to the dining table. Most likely you will need to attach it to a stud. Hopefully you could make the edge of the telly flush with the end of the cabinet/counter. Using an arm will allow you to pivot the telly toward the DR table, the island or the sink. And then you can fold it flat against the wall for a more streamline look when not in use. With this arrangement, you might have to move the radio/speakers. As mentioned by another commenter/s, I would love to see a general breakdown of cost. Lovely kitchen. Enjoy it in good health!

Thanks for the positve comments.. I give the credit to my wife for the style and color combinations, I was so worried the colors would not blend. The cabinets were done from a local family owned cabinet shop for $5,500. Maple doors with 3/4 plywood frame and soft close hinges. The quality is no where near what you get from Kraftmaid or Shanendoa, but well within budget for maple. The handles are different sizes for the doors and drawers. The corner glass is frosted and have the largest handles. My wife was set on a cherry red look and me on a maple or birch budget. My toddler already scratched the lazy susan door, in retrospect the lazy susan door is to fragile for a hard working kitchen and I do not recomend. To match the color for scratch repair is going to be a difficult but not impossible. The Pillar faucet is very practical with dirty hands and the touch feature is easy to turn off. Instalation was not dificult and looks well with the overall look. The stainless steel sink scratches easily. The back splash is just AWSOME!! Its a combination of stone like tile and mint green glass. I was so worried when she brought it home, and until the day of instalation she was second guessing herself with the green. The granite is a Brazilan Delicatus with hints of green stone and blacks spirals. $3,000 installed. I was also not sure about the black spirals with dark red cabinets but it came together very well. I wanted a Alaskan White type granite with red spirals and I would have probobly ruined the look with to much red. The range is a kenmoore pro 30 dual feul as well as the dish washer and the refrideerator is a KA only 3 years old. My only observation on the range is the knobs rotate to easily and tempeature can be changed from leaning up against them. The range hood is from VentingDirect.com Cavaliere-Euro SV218D-30 for $500 and it comes with everything. Its not a great vent but it gets the job done well. 900 cfm it's also not very loud. I do not smell food from the living room when on and when I come home from work I can smell the food in the driveway. The filter is flimsey and dishwasher safe and the lights are in the back toward the wall and do not illuminate the range well. I recomend looking at range hoods in Costco, they have one from an Italian company called Ancona. Better build quality and equal prices. They will be having a 30 inch glass in the fall. I wish they would have hade it sooner. I hope that answers most questions, again thankyou fro the positive comments. And last but not least, no more HG network for me... I can go back to what I like to watch..

Whether I've posted or just lurked, the information I've gotten here has been INVALUABLE. I can unequivocally say that my kitchen would not look anything like what it does without this Forum, and for that I offer my profound gratitude-- there is, quite literally, no way I could have done it without all of you, past and present. Originally it was soybeans, but now it's part of a gentleman's farm (horses, heritage gardens and poultry), so everything has to be hard wearing and practical. It needs to stand up to heavy traffic, mud, hay, tools, and the occasional chicken (though usually when they wander in, they don't go much further than the family room, because they like the television). That definitely informed our choices for surfaces-- they needed to be hard cleanable, and ultimately easily refinished or replaced down the line. Because the entire house already has strong architectural elements (huge moldings and built-ins), we worked within the style we already had-- all the kitchen moldings, mantels, panels and cabinets match (or are closely styled after) what already exists in the house. We definitely didn't do a period kitchen (we wanted a 2010 layout with all the conveniences), but we wanted the kitchen to look like it belonged in the house. The big thing for us was budget-- believe it or not, the entire kitchen was done for UNDER $20K. Four big things contributed to that: 1/ We DIY'ed the ENTIRE project, start to finish. The only thing we hired out was the gas line install for the fireplace and range, because state law requires it. Other than that, all planning, demo, sourcing, and construction was on us. Might be why it took us 8 years. . . 2/ We reused what we could, and scrounged a lot, especially construction materials (which could have been buckets of money, considering all the custom work we did in the space), and kept what appliances we could. It was also a great way to be environmentally responsible on a project that, let's face it, has a lot of non-necessities involved. 3/ IKEA, IKEA, IKEA. If you're anywhere reasonably close to an IKEA, and you're on anything approaching a budget, go check it out. The cabinet quality for the price can't be beat (except for a few pockets of custom cabinet makers), and there are a lot of great accessories, appliances, lighting and other things to be had for a terrific price. As always, you have to pick and choose your items for quality and value, but at least in our experience, it is definitely there to be had for the buyer with a good eye. 4/ We didn't go for major appliance upgrades. Our whole family LOVES to cook (and eat!), and we wanted a great looking, functional space to do it all in, but we just weren't convinced that we needed more than the basics right now. If we want to upgrade down the line, it's easy enough to do, but right now our Wolf budget is standing in our barn eating hay, and our LaCanche budget is steered towards this Show Hunter prospect I have my eye on . . . So there's our formula for a great kitchen that works for us considering the (kind of odd!) parameters we had. Hope you all can take at least something useful away from our experience. oh dear - about 5 months like that? how many kids do you have? what a bear that'd be!

you were so lucky dh's is a plumber - what a savings and most likely he did good work so he won't have to repair it later - lol!
It turned out very beautiful tho - and so much lighter! bet you are so glad to have all of that dark wood gone.

How do you like your cabs? I think my sister's are woodmark and I love hers - i'm thinking of getting the same cabs. I'll check a few small shops too tho.
did you get a LS put in the corner cab? the island does look different - that's weird. does the end drop down on it?

what's next? bathroom pipes will freeze next winter? lol!

desertsteph, we love the cabinets. Our budget was only $4000 for cabs and I was able to stay just under that.
Yes, I have a LS in the corner. I love it. I put all my pots and pans in there.

We bought the island a year ago so we bought the cabs to match the island. The pics are very odd. The stool is a different color but the island is the same exact color as the cabs.
You can put beans or noodles or whatever in the front part of the island drawers. I didn't put them back in there yet. Yes, it folds down.

What a huge demolition project! Here in New England, I think it would have cost $20k just to do the demolition!!! I enjoyed seeing the photos too. You have a warm , welcoming kitchen. So special that it was you and your family that made it happen. Congratulations!

LaurieLep, the renovated kitchen is amazing looking especially for under $20,000! I love your floors that I was ready to ask what width and wood species when I noticed you mentioned it was a high quality laminate floor so I looked up the floor information and the width is slightly over 4". I really love the floors and your kitchen really looks beautiful. It gives me hope when I am ready to renovate my kitchen, maybe I can also keep within a budget. Thanks for sharing.

Rhome410, the only brick was put around the window as fill in back when they took the stone out to make a window.
If it was all brick, it would have stayed :)
It was just staggered pieces all over the outside of the window hole.

Great job! Very warm and inviting. I looked through your photo album twice, relating the whole time. Even showed DH as we thought ours was a big DIY job. You have me beat! lol. My kids have been whining for 3 months with no kitchen. We do have a stove out in the barn. Not lucky enough to have the sink and dishwasher, though! Today, it happens. I loved the pics of your husband working. I should have caught some of those types of photos's when Dh was working on mine. But would not have wanted to have had sound, if you know what I mean! haha. Your kitchen is beautiful and your family will really love spending time together in there.

Did your $19k budget include the window-to-door transformation and the new doors? If so, holy moley! Would you mind posting an itemized budget? It's amazing that so much work got shoehorned into such a reasonable budget. Congratulations!

Marvelous - Just an amazing before and after story, even more so that you were able to do so much on 19K. It's just such a warm and inviting kitchen - love the cabinets and the great island. Your backsplash will be a wonderful finishing touch. I really enjoyed looking through the album to follow the progress - especially liked the historical wall paper photos!

Wow! That was a huge renovation! Congratulations!!! I like how you managed your expenses and it's great that your husband is a plumber, especially after the pipes burst, yikes. I am very impressed with your choices and how your project turned out. I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.
