A Quandry
Comments (7)I have found that phals do best in bark, or a bark and moss mix. If the roots are as bad as you say, and you want to try to save them, get them back in a bark/moss mix. Once the plants develop more roots, you can remove a certain amount of moss ... but with a damaged root system, you need to keep the humidity around the plant high in order for it to survive. I pulled an orchid out of a coworker's trash, and though it lost all but two leaves and almost all of its roots, I finally got it to bounce back by wrapping the base loosely in moss, and setting that in a small, ventilated cup of bark. It was never soggy, but it was never dry. It grew three stunted, sad leaves over time, but it now has one large, beautiful, perfect leaf, and another on the way. When I saw that, I risked pulling it out of the moss to check, and there were six fat new roots growing through the moss. YMMV, but I don't think a plant with damaged roots is going to bounce back in LECA....See MoreLooking for Dinnerware Suggestions
Comments (32)Decision made. Dinnerware ordered. Thanks to everyone who helped me think through an expensive purchase on something I will live with for years. For someone like me who processes best by writing out my thoughts to weigh pros/cons, this forum is an invaluable resource. I re-read all the posts before I went to bed and slept on it. When I woke up this morning, although I was still drawn to the Denby Linen & Antique White Mikasa, I knew the VB Audun was going to be it. I collected my lakehouse Switch 3 pieces over a couple years' time and got many pieces at a nearby VB outlet. Every time I went in I "visited" the Audun display. I was just charmed by it. When re-reading my posts I realized I was concerned about the busy-ness of some of the Ferme & Chasse pieces. So, I ended up choosing my larger pieces in the Promenade pattern, which is a more subtle black/white trellis pattern. I accented the set w/ Ferme teacups and cereal bowls, which I know will make me smile every morning. Eventually we plan to retire to the lakehouse and I think the black in it will look really nice w/ my soapstone island & countertops. My dining set there has a rubbed black finish. It will be a nice fall/winter pattern in the wooded setting up there. I know I like the feel, look and durability of the VB. Yes, I'll miss the flexibility of plain white, but since many of my other decorating choices are so "neutral" this pattern will add some punch and personality to my home. Probably more than you wanted to know..but when I've contributed to helping someone on GW, I always like to hear what choice they went with. Knowing why they chose one thing over another sometimes helps me w/ my own decorating decisions down the line. I did a lot of searching, and DinnerwareEtc.com had the best prices on VB, hands down - plus free shipping. My local outlet store didn't even come close, and they beat out all the offerings on Ebay, as well. Since it's just DH & me day-to-day, I decided to start with 4 sets w/ 6 peices, rather than 8 settings w/ just a plate/bowl/mug. I will collect additional settings over time as my budget allows. Thanks again, everybody!...See MoreFiesta dinnerware: Any other fans?
Comments (33)About 20 years ago when my old everyday china became too chipped to use, I began buying Fiesta Ware. I have Shamrock and a previous incarnation of Lemongrass. I love the weight and feel of it. I have plates, salad bowls, dessert plates, small fruit bowls, chili cups, and many serving pieces. I found an outlet for seconds in Zanesville OH and added some pieces from there....we're not by that way very often, fortunately for my budget and storage space. The house where we stay in the winter has lots of old FiestaWare, mostly pastels. Interestingly enough, when this vacation house was new, a cabinet collapsed, taking lots of Fiesta Ware with it. There is a recycling bin full of broken Fiesta in the storage room. The home's owner intends to mosaic with it "some day". Incidentally, you can buy boxes of broken Fiesta at the Zanesville outlet I mentioned, if crafts are your thing....See MoreShould I change my vision for the love of one item?
Comments (42)Sweeby, I could give you a big hug! I think you are absolutely right-- especially in my room, the table will fade into the background. In fact, I knew that all along but it never clicked-- that is why I didnt buy the French Heritage table I fell in love with last summer when Parma ordered hers. My room wouldnt do it justice.. it doesnt have the view or space to showcase it. What IS important to me is that the table is round and works well (rather than against) the other elements-- that explains why I am all over th place. Painted, copper, even mission tables have been on my list-- the only common threads are old/old looking, round, european-ish. Thank you .. I have more focus now and it really makes sense given my decision earlier today-- I am going to order the chandelier and maybe paint before I get the table. I think it will make a big difference and will give me time to decide on a table. I love the chairs with rush seats-- I could even use those with my current table. I dont see anything like them on our local CL but I will watch ebay and the consignment stores. (sorry if i am babbling and not making sense-- it's been a long day and I wanted to be sure to respond because your post was really helpful to me. )...See MoreFori
