Buying locally vs online
Comments (11)I guess it depends on what you want. If you don't really care...for instance, just want 'yellow' daffodils, then buying locally is probably fine. Most local sources from big box stores to local nurseries (around here) sell mixes...which is what you get, anyway. Very seldom do you get a correct named variety. I collect daffodils, so it matters to me. After years of buying, I am very picky. I joined a local daffodil society and am making my third order with them. Very pleased... they procure bulbs from specialty growers around the world. Btw, now is a great time to be thinking of what you might want to plant (in the fall). I always order now...and then the bulbs arrive at the right time in fall. Remember for the little bulbs, like crocus, glory of the snow and scilla that you'll need a bunch to make a show. You'll be so glad (next spring) that you spent a bit time (and $$) thinking about this now. I love spring! Have a look, if you want, at some of my daffodils now blooming at the link below...the mids are blooming now with still the lates to come. I am always looking to add more lates because I want to the show to go on and on... Take care now....Happy Spring! Comments (5)I ordered all my appliances locally and did as well or better as the random websites - plus, I have a local person to run over and see when (not IF, the way I hear it) my appliances need service or I have a problem. Customer service is primary - and small local guys would not stay in business if they couldn't provide it. That said, I ordered my sink on-line (it was delivered today and haven't opened the box yet) for $200 less than the lowest local price; my faucet on-line for $150 less than locally, and will order my under-counter filtration unit on-line because the one I want, nobody around here carries....See MorePlease Advise!! need help purchasing DV fireplace online
Comments (0)Hi all, After spending 20 minutes waiting around the local fireplace store with my two ansy toddlers in tow and getting absolutely no help or even a "i'll be right with you" (while one salesclerk flirted with some guy, another stood around, and another was on the phone), I decided I should save myself future frustration and take my business elsewhere to buy my direct vent gas fireplaces. But this being the ONLY fireplace store in our town, i don't have another option to go elsewhere, except online or do a one hour trek to the next closest store. My GC will do all the installations, I just need to order the fireplaces. Can you recommend a good online store to purchase from? I need to buy 3 fireplaces, so i don't want to make a costly mistake! please advise!...See MoreWish I could help our local economy, but stores hurt themselves!
Comments (24)I think this depends so much on local situations. I see ideagirl's point, and as many have stated above, many of us are willing to pay a premium to encourage local business. BUT, this is a two-way street: local businesses should definitely be aware that they are competing for business that is also offered online, often for cheaper, and actively implement the friendly, helpful service that is the big advantage they have over online retailers. Sorry but guilting me into shopping locally is not going to cut it, when I walk into stores that have a huge mark-up and can't be bothered to assist me. I understand the higher costs local business incurs and willingly pays a bit more. Hundreds more? No, because at that point I can't afford it at all. My tactic is to check locally first - go into the store, look around, and see what happens. Unfortunately, I am often ignored and/or treated with utter indifference. At that point my philosophy is that if they don't care to have my business, I'm happy to spend less online....See MoreRelated Professionals
