Chicago Remodel: Slider and hinged doors
Comments (12)Thanks - I'll touch base with Dave. I'd read good things about him on this board (and am interested in Okna), but as his location is nowhere near me, I wanted to go into a few showrooms first. Here's a question - I like the look of the existing aluminum sliding door and it works. Should I replace it? Will it take 20 years (or more?) to recoup the costs via energy savings from a better sliding door? I'm concerned about energy savings, and also with the fact that anything in front of the sliders fades (as we don't get a ton of light, I don't prefer window coverings). I'd hope that a new door would have some kind of UV protection. We don't currently use the door much and could put plastic over it in the winter. We are mostly gutting the room that it's in, though, so now would be the time to replace it. What's the way to go? THANKS....See More5 ft Slider or 3 ft Patio Door
Comments (4)Bear in mind that you will have a wider clear opening with the 3-0 door, but two feet less of day light opening. You might also want to consider a 5-0 patio style swinging door, (It is hinged in the center and one panel is fixed and the other swings open and folds against it). They are also called atrium doors (little a) and Verandah doors. It will give you just a few inches more clear opening width than a slider, but offers two panels of glass. These come as inswings only, and generally have a sliding screen that slides from the stationary panel to the operating panel to close....See MoreSliding Door/Hinged Patio Door? (etc)
Comments (26)Thanks, Ikbum - good to know! Right now, I'm thinking that if I can find a good slider - maybe with a transom on top, if that will make using the door easier - if the way I'm thinking to go. Will post again once I'm settled. Thank you to you and asm. This conversation has been really useful!...See MoreSliding Door/Hinged Patio Door? (etc)
Comments (33)I spot your sister's trio of art next to your back door! They look fantastic there! (Did I suggest that? Or did I just think that was the right spot for them?) I still see Timothy's post. Maybe they vetted him and he proved he wasn't a spammer. That would be nice. We've had a rash of new posters who've come in and done nothing more than pitch a link on multiple threads. I reported on spammer who did that about a week back and the posts are now gone....See Moredilly_ny
