Will I tire of a beach seashore theme? Show me your beach house!
Comments (12)Thanks to all! Really great suggestions! agree with many of the posters and my sofas are always solids. In my primary residence, I have a tone on tone damask and a woven solid and a solid green (in different rooms, of course). I always accent with chairs and pillows and accessories, BUT, because my primary residence is 18th century, mahogany, with a few whimsical touches, I really wanted the second home to be totally different than the primary residence. Maybe my title was misleading. The only fabric reflecting a coastal theme would be a pair of club chairs. The solid sofa is great, but I thought doing a pair of two themed chairs, translation: FUN, chairs, and the chairs would be the only themed pieces of furniture, would make me smile when I enter the home and put me in a vacation mode frame of mind!! Having said that, I am now rethinking the fabric only because I like, not love that fabric. I kept gravitating to it because it works beautifully with the green sofa. The greens in the crab fabric are perfect with the green sofa....so, now I am off hunting for fabric again. I really like greens and blues together. My PR colors are red, goldish- yellow and green. I have no blue in this home, so now leaning toward a blue and green color scheme and, perhaps, a geometric or a paisley. I do not want over the top beachy, but I do want to feel I am away from my home with subtle coastal touches. If this were my primary residence, I would not even be questioning the theme, but because this is a getaway home, I do want it to reflect the area and the laid-back mode. Planning to use paint colors and fabrics I would not think of using in my PR. I will let you know what I find and i am keeping all of your great thoughts and suggestions in mind!! I think the crab walk fabric is walking!!!...See MoreDesign Around #18: Post Designs for Art of Kitchen Design.
Comments (153)Purplepansies Blue Louise--I love the combination of the copper brown and the blue. Florantha Starry Night--Good job finding swirly tile. I tried this exercise, but was stumped searching for swirly tile. I love the dark blue drapes. Purplepansies Approaching Thunder Storm--Oooh, I love the artwork! You did a great job of capturing the colors and the mood of the painting. I love the magma supreme granite. Honorbiltkit Vuillard--Also a beautiful painting, full of interesting details and patterns. You captured the color of the rug in the painting, and the painting you chose for your design does a great job of mimicking the painting in the painting. If that makes any sense. Palimpsest Vuillard--You also did a great job of capturing the colors of the painting, playing up the neutrals a bit compared to Honorbiltkit. The floor--is it Marmoleum?--mimics the colors of the rug. Style-wise, the table is unexpected, but I really like it in the design. Pricklypearcactus Lanadscape with Butterflies--I like the interplay of colors in your kitchen just as much as in the original painting. I just want to say how very much I've enjoyed this thread. I liked the artwork, I liked the kitchens, and I liked all the creative thinking that went into putting them together....See MorePendant dilemma .... beach house kitchen
Comments (23)Thanks, everyone! I found this wallpaper for my husband, who loves boating and fishing. I am trying to show him that you can have some cool coastal stuff in a house without ending up looking like the nautical aisle in Marshall's! The pendants are wonderful, I don't think they are ever going to look perfect illuminated at night but we are experimenting with different wattages and types of bulb to even out the glow. arcy - yes, I have looked at taller dressers also. I want to keep low enough that we can also use the top as a cell phone charging area. I need to hit the antique shops around here! Mtn - the niche used to be the entry to our old dining room, but we moved the entry during our reno and I decided to have a niche rather than a closet to use the space. Background on this reno: Our house here is best described as a rambling eclectic Cape house. The old dining room was a tiny converted 1940s carport that was several steps down from the large 1960s living room. From the dining room, you would step back up to the completely charming but useless kitchen which dated back to 1910 with many subsequent iterations. During our renovation we tore out the middle of the house (old kitchen and dining room) and rebuilt a large kitchen/dining room. Here is a teaser photo - literally the only angle I could shoot just now without cleaning up a lot of mess. We are still finishing aspects of the kitchen and I promise to share more photos when we are done. I am really happy with the results - we started planning in 2010.......See MoreAnyone built this home or a similar 2 family home? Plan 923-22
Comments (6)The first thing I always looked for when I was getting ideas for my house was the path for carrying heavy bags of groceries from the garage/driveway into the kitchen. For either kitchen there are 3 doors and a number of turns to negotiate. I cook almost every meal from scratch, if you or the people living in the smaller side don't cook then it won't matter. But if you do, carrying bags to either kitchen sucks. Other common things I looked for was how easy was it to go from my bedroom with laundry to the laundry room. Did I have to negotiate a dining room table, couches, doors etc? Those 2 items alone would make me put this plan in the garbage, not even mentioning that with the wrap around covered porch and screened porch (that I do love from the outside) really make the entire house dark inside. It looks good from the outside, but you live on the inside and this plan is just not good for everyday living. Walk through it in your mind doing everyday things and I think you will see that for yourself....See Morerkb21
