Vent hood/venting question

We may have to change our original kitchen design and put our range on our island. We bought a 36" Capital, and I want to make sure I don't skimp on venting, especially if it will be essentially in the middle of two rooms. My big question has to do with the venting once it gets to the attic. I don't want to go through my roof since it is near the front of my home and very visible from the street, so my question is, once it is in the attic, can the duct make a 90 turn and go out the side of my house? This was the original idea when the range was going to be against the wall. It would have to travel about 8-10 feet or so. I hope I'm not asking a dumb question, but I feel like the more I read about venting/vent hoods, the more confused I get. If anyone wants to post about how great their island hood is - we're thinking about 42" and 1200 cfms - that would be great too. Thanks a lot.
