Cabinet Guts - White Melamine vs. plywood
Comments (7)My Mom has the original builder's kitchen in her condo and it's a minimum of 20 years old. Melamine over 5\8 (might even be 1\2 inch) particleboard. Hinges are going but they have not come loose from the cabinets or doors (which are also melamine - maybe over MDF but I doubt it). I've attached a link to the ANSI ratings for particleboard so you can look at the properties of the various types. Usually Commercial or Industrial grade is used in quality cabinet construction (either M-S or M-2). Ask the cabinet maker or manufacturer what they are using. Of course the method of assembly is as important, staples, plastic corners, full valances, tongue and groove, doweled and glued, full backs or thinner hardbacks with hanging rails, cross valance between gables behind the toe kick, just legs, wood face frames - some of these are preferable to others. Are your edges at least colour matched to the door? I can't say for veneers but what is the veneer being mounted on? 3\4 MDF would be my guess if they are solid. This good a number of high end companies now offer their painted finishes on solid MDF doors - no cracking like on 5 piece mortise and tenon doors. That's what I picked up I'm sure some of the KD's no more for sure. Here is a link that might be useful: ANSI guidelines for particleboard standards...See MoreMelamine color inside kitchen cabinets
Comments (11)The boxes of cabinets are NOT the same material as the doors. No one would pay for cherry boxes as standard! That's an upgrade, and only one you pick when you have glass doors where the boxes actually show. Otherwise, the most common solution is the light maple/birch that the boxes are made from is simply clear coated. Some cabinet lines offer the interior done the same color as the exterior as a standard without upcharge, but you're getting the whatever color stain on the birch/maple, not on cherry. And your're going to be in the upper tier of pricing for that extra to be a no charge inclusion....See MoreCabinets' Melamine Interior ??
Comments (4)Sophie-does the melamine-is-best include Ikea? Our last house had Ikea boxes and after seven years, I could see the seam at some edges kind of split apart. My folks have custom plywood (I think) cabinet boxes from 1980 and they have held up so nicely. I'm inclined to go the plywood route based on my observation. However, Ikea is a constant temptation because it's so darn cheap....See MoreRefinishing Cabinets: How-to Melamine Interior?
Comments (9)Bmorepanic: that looks perfect! Unfortunately it can't be bought in California :( as an update i ended up picking up an Alkyd paint from Home Depot and its related primer. I'm just going to paint it in the end. ConTact is what's in there now and it looks like crap now. Formica/Veneer: not a bad option at all, but I will have to stain it and i really don't want to get into staining. wIll report back after the project to let you know how it goes!...See MoreRelated Professionals
