I don't think so because we are not rearranging anything.

i am guessing you will need to install new backsplash. dont forget time to paint/stain cabinets, and paint touch ups before completion.

If anything goes wrong, doesn't fit, or doesn't work right, or if any of your key players (i.e., cabinet maker, electrician) gets sick, has a family emergency, takes a vacation he forgot to mention to you, gets arrested, etc., a delay can happen. These are all things that have happened to the good people here.

That said, with good planning and relatively minimal changes, you certainly could come in on time. Your planned timeline does not seem unreasonable to me.

Our remodel was far more complex. It involved removing a wall, digging a trench in the slab to move plumbing, removing and preserving wood flooring, removing and preserving built-ins original to the house, and putting in new walls, new floors, and a new tongue and groove ceiling. Even with a week and a half delay on the cabinets, our whole project took five weeks from demo to completion.

It took a contractor who considered my time as valuable as his and who took pride in always being on schedule to accomplish this. He had his own crew who did almost everything on the project. He brought in someone else to hook up the gas line, and I brought in my own people for the cabinets and countertop, but he and his crew did everything else (demo, electrical, plumbing, tiling, carpentry), so he had pretty much complete control.

I might set up the temp kitchen first, then plan on more than 1 day to empty the kitchen, and maybe more than 1 to demo and clean...But I don't know how large your space is, or how much stuff you have, so your experience may not compare to mine.

Current flooring is staying? You may want to protect it, if you hadn't thought of that.

I found that everything took longer than planned. Much longer. It's impossible to know what issues might arise for a given stage until one is at that stage.

If you are lucky, and there are no issues, a few things you might want to contemplate in addition to those already mentioned are that often-times a trade will not want to work on his part if there is another trade in there. So, for example, the electrician may not want to be scheduled on the day the template for the counters is being made (and vice-versa). The other thing is that it can take two weeks or longer from creating the template for the counter to installing it. Finally, one day for demo seems ambitious, but if you're just removing cabinets and counters, then it might be doable.

I do know someone who had it all done in a couple of weeks (similar to yours, just changing the cabinets and appliances from old to new with the same exact cabinet sizes and plumbing) so it is possible. Not for us, we are months behind the original schedule, but ours is an addition and a brand new layout.

If you are going to paint, I would want to do that after old cabs are out, but before new ones are installed. Would make painting soooo much easier not having to worry about trimming around all the cabs. And if you do 2 coats, that's 2 days. just my opinion

Rehtse I wish you the very best, but my son is a carpenter and he and his crew did our kitchen. Work started Feb 1 and it's not done yet!!!! We basically used the same layout as the old kitchen, but things happen. He and his wife had their first child so we lost almost two weeks there. We couldn't get the electrical and plumbing inspectors here for over a week. If you put in new wiring for recessed lights, undercounter lights, etc you need an inspection. Plumbing, new pipes, dishwasher, garbage disposal, sink all that plumbing needs an inspector. We found a pipe behind our upper cabinets we didn't know about, took several days to schedule the plumber to come in and move it. Two exterior doors we ordered have taken 8 weeks to come in, which means the new floor is only 98% done but not in front of the new doors. I've heard the average time to figure on a new kitchen is 9-12 weeks.

If any permits are pulled for your Project, you may need one or more inspections. Note also that if you do need inspections, Code changes from time to time and you may or may not meet current Code with your "new" kitchen. For example, if you have a range next to a doorway with no space (for safety) b/w it and the doorway, you may have to change that since Code in most places now says that you must have a certain amount of space b/w the range & doorway. (That "certain amount" may vary from municipality to municipality.) As another example, all kitchen outlets must now be on a GFI circuit of some sort (either all outlets GFI or the one at the "beginning" of the circuit must be a GFI.) All kitchen outlets must also be "tamper resistant". No, I don't know all the details of any of these, but they are examples to show you things you may run into.

If you have not yet received all your cabinets & appliances, then you have no guarantee they will be on time...any delays there may delay your Project.

Expect the unexpected! It's a rare remodel that doesn't encounter at least one "surprise"...that's why you should always include in your budget a line item equal to 10% to 15% of your overall remodel cost...it's those "surprises" that are often "budget busters" and/or "schedule breakers"!

I've had some good surprises; our remodel is more extensive, but Beuhl's right on with the electrical. We thought our old electrical panel would be fine, but with adding in all the GFI circuits and whatnot that we didn't even know were necessary at the start, we had to swap out the whole panel. So, that added some time as we contemplated the whole, "well, if we're getting a new panel, we mind as well get one that will accommodate this and that and..." so it took some planning, and that made a delay, and pretty much the whole reno has turned out that way.

Not to scare you more, but the biggest thing that can't be planned for is if contractors suddenly simply decide that they don't want to show up. We've lost months due to trying to motivate our contractor (who had excellent references) and are about at our wit's end after almost 10 months and still no end in sight! Don't worry though, our project includes more than a kitchen, but was still supposed to take 5-6 months :)

Great points everyone. I will be sure to not make any additional changes that would require permitting. The only issue I may have is with some lighting so I'll have to discuss that with the electrician. Past that, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that everyone does what they are supposed to do when they said they will. I also need to take care of the floor and hope I don't have too much paint to touch up. Too much extra time without a functioning kitchen would be very difficult with 2 small children at home! If you divide your 19 days by 5, it comes to almost 4 weeks, add another week for delays, problems, etc., and you can figure about 5 weeks or so to finish. Maybe six.
