Is there something above that would tell me if it leans gray. You are correct. Chroma tells you how close to a neutral white, gray or black (the grayscale) a color is. It's called the whiteness, grayness or blackness characteristic of a color. MT's Chroma is 1.48 and Jute is 1.42. So Jute is just a snidge more grayed than MT. Or you could reverse it and say MT is just a snidge more colorful than Jute. Sometimes when people perceive a characteristic of grayness they'll call it a "gray undertone". When they perceive a characteristic of whiteness, they'll sometimes call it "chalky". Whiteness, grayness, blackness is not only technically correct, I think it's a lot more specific and simpler. As far as warm and cool, every color in context of its color system can be categorized as inherently warm or cool. In the example above, once you get to the 5Y mark in the yellow hue family, the colors start to shift to the cool side. Every color in a color system has a warm side and a cool side. With color temperature, odds are the inherent color temperature of a color will hold true. But context matters, the light matters. In situ with other contents of a room, a color that's warm in context of its color system could take on a cool role - or vice versa a color that's inherently cool could take on a warm role. Puts the color in context of its hue family and illustrates chroma; maybe makes the whiteness, grayness, blackness scale I'm talking about easier to see/understand.

I went on the easyrgb website to convert SW Hopsack & Portabello to BM colors since I don't have a SW fandeck. SW Hopsack converted to these BM colors: Jamesboro Gold, Jackson Tan and Woodstock Tan. SW Portabello converted to BM Davenport Tan, Jamesboro Gold and Kingsport Gray. Isn't it ironic that both colors when converted to BM gave Jamesboro Gold as a close match. Maybe it's a sign?!? I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I won't be disapointed with Sag Harbor Gray for my kitchen. I love my Minas soapstone! I purchased a mineral oil beeswax from William Sonoma to oil my soapstone. It takes a bit more elbow grease but last twice as long as plain mineral oil. It's also not as messy. Good luck and keep me posted.

aurora - I think with all your windows, the Manchester Tan would work in your room. I agree with above poster to paint a big area of the wall in your room. peony - sorry it didn't work for you, but thank you for sharing your experience. Good to know it might not work in a room with less natural light. I too noticed the green undertone when I had samples on the wall. In fact, at first I thought it would be too close to the green on my kitchen walls (BM Baby Turtle). Kitchen and family room are very open to each other. But, once the room was painted, I couldn't see any green undertones, even though it's right next to green.

So.... I am posting swatches but only because I know you guys are smart enough to know that it's a completely worthless endeavor to try to evaluate paint colors on any kind of illuminated device, like a monitor. Since they rely on the very small RGB color space to render colors, they literally are not able to render color like we see it in real life. The swatches are for reference only - everybody knows you have to get in real life chips. Spanish Sand has Delta E difference of 1.4 from Manchester Tan - which means it's a relatively small difference, but you're going to see a difference when comparing. HC-81 MANCHESTER TAN Benjamin Moore Classic Colors OR-W7U SPANISH SAND Behr Color Collection Lentil has a Delta E difference of 1.2 from Softer Tan - again, means you'll be able to tell the difference between the two colors. SW 6141 SOFTER TAN Sherwin Williams Color N270-2U LENTIL Behr Color Collection Those are the closest colors from Behr. Everything else in the Behr collection is a ways off with Delta E differences of 2 or more - which is a lot and not in the ballpark of being a decent match and therefore not really worth mentioning.
