Granite seams around cooktop/sink
Comments (8)We have one dead center in the sink cutout -- I didn't want it there at the time, having read (on this forum and elsewhere) differing opinions about the wisdom of that, but the granite place insisted, saying they ALWAYS do it there and in fact, the narrow strip around the sink is the weakest point and better to have a seam there than have the pressure on a solid, but thin, piece of granite. In reality, it's completely invisible. (The sink is rodded, of course, but I don't think they did any other reinforcing.) We also have a single strip behind the rangetop, seamed at both ends. They did it that way without asking if I had any other preference (I didn't!) I imagine you might notice any seam a little more with a more uniform stone -- ours has lots of movement and lots of different colors and the seams just blend right in. Comments (11)Thanks Prill! I like the way they matched up the white veining on your seam. Interestingly enough, I am going to try to get away with not oiling my soapstone either. Lauriec - thanks for the edge info. Hadn't heard of that one before. OK, I had a conversation with the fabricator's coordinator gal late yesterday afternoon. I had let them know several people on this Kitchen Forum had Soapstone counters with sink seams and it seemed to be a standard practice. She told me SHE would want the seam in the sink too lol! And that it isn't a problem for them to do it. So that's where I'm going to get my seam :) Thanks again everyone!...See MoreRe: granite seam in middle of sink hole?
Comments (1)My granite guy will do it either way I want. A seam in the middle of the sink or a seam at the corner of the counter. I opted for the seam at the sink. It's a smaller seam and wont run diagonally across my counter. I hope it will be less noticable....See MorePls show me your granite seam thru the sink!
Comments (11)Iris 16: Seams in the center of sinks are much more common today than they were over 15 to 25 years ago.... IMHO - the CARDINAL rule of seams is: "Smaller is ALWAYS BETTER" Whenever i can make the seam smaller and have a better chane of "hiding" the seam - I will. I NEVER tell a customer that "they'll never see the seam" or that "the seam will be invisible" - BUT, the smaller the seam is, and the least noticable a seam is - the better. There are really great techniques that are available to Fabricators now where they can make their seams next to "invisible"... (almost) If your Fabricator wants to do this - and you are not completely "sold" on the idea yet - maybe he has a recent project that he can show you where the quality of the seam he is proposing can be inspected by you so that you CAN be 100% comfortable with the "seam in the center of the sink" location... BEFORE you committ to the work with him..... hope that helps ya!!!!!!!! kevin...See Moredeegeegirl
