Countertop layout - What would you do?

I am planning new granite tile kitchen countertops. I'm wrestling with a layout problem. the countertops will be 25.5" deep. the tiles are 12" x 12" which leaves a small 1.5" gap. I don't know what to do with it. I'm thinking put at the back; but then I got thinking about doing something wild like putting a decorative strip down the middle. I'd love some thoughts on what would be the best thing to do.

How about a 1.5" deep backsplash / ledge?

How do you plan to do the edge detail (front edge)? If you are using a coordinating bullnose; does it come up a bit onto the face of the counter reducing slightly the gap? How about some kind of pencil liner at the front between the tile and bullnose and then again at the back between the tile and wall . Are you planning a backsplash?

We just had our template done yesterday so I won't have granite for another 2 weeks or so but I'll probably do something similar to what I've done in the past. I have a clear glass bowl that I keep lemons and limes in (I use lemons a lot in cooking) I also have a paper towel holder and my my coffee pot out and usually a small potted plant on the sunny part of my counter. I cannot live without having my cookbook out so I have a decorative plate stand that I use for it (see link below). The majority of my cookbooks are stored over my range in the cupboard and I have to drag a chair over...so instead I've compiled my most frequently used recipes into one book and it sits on the counter. Just a thought. Do you have to have some of the caramel in the counter? Once you choose a counter with caramel, your counter becomes less neutral and perhaps less timeless. I know you have caramel tones in your wood, but wood is supposed to be neutral so your are not required to repeat.it. Not saying the caramel is not nice and would not look great, but I just want to be sure you see that you could go with a counter with more neutral colours in it if that was what you find. This is nearly identical to the kitchen I will have - we're building right now so I can't comment on how it works in "real life". But a friend built a house with a similar layout and she loves it. I received a lot of negative comments about the layout - it is very different from the typical G shaped kitchen, but I think it will work great for our family. I made the island 10 feet long and 5 feet deep, which to me is more space than I've ever had to work with - but I'm no gourmet cook!

I prefer the first one. I can tell you from experience that once the slab is horizontal on your countertop and cut up, it won't look quite as busy, but will give just the right amount of visual interest. Plus the first one looks more high end. The second one looks like what goes in every tract home.

A small ledge is an interesting idea, but I'm not sure I want to loose the space or make the tile job any more complicated then I have too.

The front edge is still up for grabs. It will either be granite bullnose or oak trim. In the bathrooms I did the oak trim and backsplash, it looks awesome. In the kitchen I'm thinking about Blue Lorenzo (black) tile and earth tone glass backglass tiles to match up with natural oak cabinets.

If you did the oak front trim could you do a slim border of oak at the counter edge and butt the granite tile up to that? Then you can just do your glass backsplash.

I would ask at the John Bridge Tile forums. The pros there have done many granite tile countertops and should be able to guide you.
