White oak cabinets? Not rift or 1/4 sawn. Anyone have them?

Here is my bathroom with oak cabinets. I also have a big closet in the hall way. Well all my cabinets in the house are this way but the kitchen and laundry room. They are glossy white.
here is the master bath (small but we like it that way)

QTR& rift sawn 2 1/4" T&G White Oak
Comments (3)My rift and quartered was supposed to be 60-70% rift and the rest quartered. I have under 10% quartered, which doesn't bother me -- I would have ordered all rift, but R & Q was significantly cheaper. What I didn't like was that there is a lot of flat sawn appearance. The boards may show some rift, but some boards show a lot more cathedral than rift. Also, there were a significant number of shorts under the 12" minimum, quite a number of boards discarded for bad milling, etc. I had ordered 10% more than my installer would normally order (so I could be picky), but had to order even more, and still had to use boards that should have been used for kindling wood. My service/delivery/etc. from Hurst Hardwoods was fine, but I should have paid another $1.40/sq ft and bought the material locally....See MoreI need photos of your stained rift sawn white oak cabinets! Comments (9)Linelle: your description perfectly captures the difference between my sample and what I'm looking for! My sample is flat and lifeless. What I want is for the wood to look rich and alive. The example I chose may be red oak. I know white oak can be just as lively as red oak though. There are plenty of QS white oak photos that look rich and full of figure. It's the rift white oak that I cannot find good photos of! ILoveRed: I have seen the photo of the tall cabinets in the first kitchen and it is gorgeous! It doesn't show the detail of the wood as clearly as I need but I'll add it to my photos. The second kitchen you found has some really good photos. Thanks so much for finding that for me! omelet: I'm not an expert either but I agree with you - the cut determines the figure of the wood more than the finish. But take a look at the figure on the unstained backside of my sample door: Unstained, it has a lot of wonderful richness and unexpected fleck in too. If they didn't leave the backside unstained I would have never known that RS white oak could look so lively and have such lovely figure. In one of my other threads, we seem to have figured out that they used a mix of woods and cuts on this sample door. The side rails look like RS white oak, top and bottom rails QS white oak and center panel is plain sawn red oak. That's a fantastic suggestion to post on the flooring forum! Comments (0)I'm cross posting this from the kitchen forum in the hopes of getting help from you wood experts here on the Flooring forum. :) If anyone would be so kind as to share your photos of stained rift sawn white oak, I'd be so appreciative! I'd like to gather a collection of photos to show my cabinet maker to help me describe what I want. I'm not totally happy with the door sample I got from my cabinet maker (see photos below). I really like the colour of the stain but I don't like how opaque it is because it totally masks all the figure of the wood (the medullary ray flecks and natural shimmer of the wood) and I hate how the stain darkened the grain so dramatically. I do like to see the grain, but not with so much contrast to the surrounding wood. The unstained backside of the door has wonderful figure, with a beautiful shimmer to the wood and lots of little medullary ray flecks. Here's a photo (note that it appears they used a mix of QS white oak, RS white oak and plain sawn red oak to construct the door): Here is an example of the rich, lively finish I would like for my cabinets: This was the best photo I could find. All the other photos I found were blurry, didn't have enough resolution to show the detail of the wood, or were of QS vs RS oak. Comments (7)You can see the color and grain difference along with finish more easily by looking at flooring sites. The color is not yellow. More pale with light browns without as pronounced open grain. Can be cerused. Rift or quartersawn is not necessary to avoid the open grain. 10 years agoDeedles, we put plain oak in our utility room. I'm not against plain oak cabinets at all, but they can be overpowering if there are a lot of cabinets. The stain the cabinet maker used on these is SW chestnut, and it looks more red in person. No underlying yellow at all.
if you don't want the oak to absorb too much stain, thus reducing the visible graining, you first need to "fill" the grain. That can be done with a light coat of varnish or shellac or diluted solvent. Or even using gel stain. Your cabinetmaker is the best person to ask about this.
