If you plan on using the island as prep space then I would want to scoot it closer to the range. Right now you have it at 50" which IMHO is too much. Bring it in about 6". I also am concerned about the clearance between the frig door and island. As you kids get older they'll have their faces in that frig ALL THE TIME! DO you use your oven alot? Do you have concerns about kids running to get to the frig and having to navigate a hot oven door? COuld you switch the frig and oven to the other end of south run? It would give you some nice counter space for the kids to make snacks/sandwiches. I'm thinking (from pantry end ) oven, frig, and then counter. I initially thought frig closest to the pantry but then you have the wall clearance problem. I nkow you didn't ask about this but moving the frig would also alleviate the island/frig door issue.

You won't be a one-cook family for long! Children grow very quickly! But, yes, I think those aisles are fine.

What about your island? Is it one or two levels (one is much more useful & two will not hide a mess...)? Seating overhang (15" for counter-height & 12" for bar-height)?

Some may think it's overkill b/w island & range wall, but since you have all three major zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) sharing floor space in that aisle, I think the 4' is a good size. This aisle will be the one used the most while working in the kitchen...the refrigerator counter & aisle probably won't be used much for "regular" prepping & cooking since the counter is too far from the range or a source of water. It might work as a Baking Center, though. (Could you make the counter a little deeper to give you more room for rolling out dough, etc.?)

As to the refrigerator aisle, it will be a major entry into the kitchen b/c of the locations of the Great Room and refrigerator, so that aisle should be as wide as possible as well...48" might be better than the 42" you have now.

Behind the island seats....since there's no wall there and presumably people can veer over into the Great Room to get by, that space is fine as well.

You appear to have a Study as well as an office...do you really need both? If that small office off the kitchen is for the kids, I would start thinking now about how you're going to keep an eye on them when they're on the computer. That area is so closed off and they can close the door on you! You might consider ending the kitchen wall just beyond the last cabinet and taking down the walls to open that office up to the Kitchen & Breakfast Room...that way it's open enough to be able to check on children or for you to go back & forth if you need to use the computer while you're in the kitchen. It will also be less claustrophobic in the tiny room (it's a good size for a pantry, but it's pretty small for an office!)

You know, if you can put up shelving on the side wall of the closet, it would be a great place for cookbooks...

I think the aisles sound good. Usually I'd vote for less space between island and stove, but, like Buehl said, and as I think as we all went over with this plan a while back, you need room for opening the dw and having people at stove and sink, so a roomy aisle is better, and 48" should do it.

What style door will your fridge have? French or side-by-side will need less aisle space. If it's a full door, and 36" wide, you'd maybe want 4 ft so someone could slide by the open door, but I think 42" (minimum) would work. I wouldn't make a large sacrifice to have it larger, but maybe a minor one. It's not like the fridge is open a long time like a dw.

I've said before, I love and envy your pocket office. As I stand here at my messy little desk area, I sure wish I had the shelves and ability to close it off that you'll have. :-)

You guys are so good! I swear, you read my mind on some of these things.

Yes, I think I would like to keep the 4' between the cooktop and island b/c this will be a big walkway in my kitchen. I am concerned about the 3'6 measurement, though, especially in front of the frig. I could recess the frig into the wall like others have done to save a few inches, but I still think I would like this walkway to be closer to 48 inches.

I dearly love to bake and do quite a bit of that and less of the cooking, unless you count simple stuff. So I was thinking that the oven/frig wall could contain my baking center. So I would like to separate the oven and frig with one on each end but I'm not sure which would be better where?

Also, my favorite island is Morton5 (pic below). I love the end of her island that contains drawers and counter space. Could I do that on the end of my island, closest to the frig wall? And I would like seating on two sides. So like Morton's island, but with an overhang on the end for seating. Is there room? If I increase the island to 4 feet in depth, is there room for that (by moving the carpet line back in the great room a foot). Then I would have a nice 4 feet width of counter space for prepping and additional baking stuff, right across from the counter that could be my baking center?

Buehl, thanks for your thoughts on the pocket office. I actually love your drawing b/c it makes it more open (how do you do that, by the way??? :) But it is really what I affectionately call my "messy" office. It will be for mail, kid schedules, calendars, invitations, a place to set the laptop and printer, etc. DH will work out of the house 100% of the time in a few years and very occasionally meet clients in his study. I didn't want our stuff mingling with his office/client stuff. And I mostly didn't want my mess visible to the kitchen so, hence, the door. I am really hoping that it isn't too cramped b/c I couldn't afford to devote more space to it. I'm actually considering moving the wall into the closet a little more for a little more depth there.
