May Compromise - Laminate Counter Questions
Comments (24)Wow, Thanks Everyone for your thoughts! I am so appreciative. It's nice to read that laminate is still a very viable option. After my experience this morning I am more willing than ever to go with the laminate counters. I appreciate the heads up about the scratching. I will make sure I check into that before I order anything. I walked through the granite showroom this morning and was underwhelmed by the choices that the builder offers. They have maybe 10! - 12! slabs total! in the warehouse and the sales associate wouldn't even show them all to me.?! She only wanted me to look at the 5 level one stones they carry. I saw a pretty Delicatus slab and walked over to it and wouldn't move until she came over. When I asked, she had never even heard of quartzite and had to go to the office manager to find out what I was talking about. DH & I decided that we will have them price out the Delicatus with Hanstone perimeters and the Delicatus with laminate perimeters. The sales associate was not excited about pricing out the Delicatus slab for me. What's up with that? It's my house. It's my budget. If I decide not to use it I want it to be my choice, not some salesperson who thinks New Venetian Gold is a better choice than Venetian Gold because it "is Newer". I am not lying. That is exactly what she said. Unfortunately, I believe that I am locked into this granite showroom with our builder. I'm waiting to hear back as to whether or not that is true. At least I know I can order laminate and I will be more than content to do so....See MoreKitchen diversity is a GOOD thing.
Comments (35)It's like everything else in life: moderation is the key. A little bit of "pressure" can make a person think and end in a much better kitchen (as it did in my case). Too much encouragement, ie "do whatever you are inclined to. It will be fabulous" doesn't offer advice to reflect on, nor does it present other options. But I think the underlaying foundation should always be concern and an attitude of caring, not judgement, and that was always one of the very special things about this forum, but I think a tad of meanness has been introduced in recent months. I read a comment the other day and did a triple take - certaintly she could not have actually meant that!! It was an outright insult about another's choice and blatent attack on the person's creativity. The next poster said as much and suggested ignoring and hopefully that is what happened. Internet forums in general are notoriously outrageously cruel. This one never was and we need to be on guard against that. I remember a day when even the finished kitchens that were far, far less than the dream kitchens we see here were posted, there was an abundance of comments, all of which were positive. There is *something* to appreciate about every kitchen. They seemed to get as many oooohs and aaahs as the really spectacular ones. I was almost blown over by that aspect when I first joined in 08. I thought, "how could strangers really be that caring and considerate and encouraging toward someone they don't really even know? Because that kitchen is nice, but they are over the top with their enthusiasm and support of it!" That was special and rare and made EVERYONE feel included, regardless of what type of kitchen they did or what kind of budget they were on. But now it seems like the swooning is reserved for only the kitchens that comply to the group standard, and that affects the flavor of the forum. I think it also makes the people who don't or can't comply to the standard feel bullied. If we value people and the special characteristics of this forum, we should make an effort to make all kitchen renovators feel really good about their kitchen. If nothing else, we can appreciate all the effort and planning that went into it!...See MoreGood example of two things to avoid in your remodel
Comments (29)Not a kitchen forum regular, I popped in to search for topics on the insinkerator instant hot water/filtered water dispensers (specifically looking for reasons ours might have needed replacement twice in less than ten years) and found this topic. We did a cosmetic update of our kitchen about ten years ago and replaced the tumbled marble tile backsplash with subway tile with a wide grout line. Our tiler, a woman in her 70's, came up with a pretty good way to finish off the backsplash going past the cabinets in a tricky corner: The photo is horrible quality---cell phone ten years ago. Eagle eyes will see a very tiny strip of green wall between the door moulding and the cabinets. This has since been painted the cabinet color :-)...See MoreSlate backsplash -- too much of a good thing?
Comments (11)I would run it up to the bottom of the cabinets. It does make me think about the window tile tho. Slate doesn't normally have trim tiles. You have the area where the tile turns into the window and the bullnosed end tiles and the funny place where the wall cabinet doesn't end at the exactly correct place to line up the tile. I wonder if you could get some larger format tile of one of the colors - like 12" tiles of the green or coppery color. You could take them to a fabricator and get bullnoses cut on an edge to have an "end" for the wall, the small about of exposed top near the windows and a turned corner for the window...See Moredesertsteph
