Does anyone have 5 inch red oak floors in their kitchen?

If so, have you had any problems with them?? we are being advised not to get these as they warp, but I love the look of the wider plank floors!

I don't have them in my kitchen but I do have them of varying thicknesses (3-8") in a few rooms of my house. They've been there over 50 years with no warping. I think the answer for you would be based on where you live, though. I'm in the SF Bay area where weather is sort of not much of a factor. No humid summers and cold dry winters.

If your local floor installer has experienced warping, there might be something to it!

With the dark stain, it visually won't matter that much. White oak will tend to have tighter grain (softer texture) than red oak. It is also a slightly harder wood which is better for dents. Rift and quartered has a different look than plain-sawn flooring. It is linear looking with annual rings running more or less in straight lines along the planks. 10-20% of the R&Q lot will exhibit ray fleck, which is quite pretty. Plain-sawn produces a cathedral pattern with the annual rings, what most people think of with oak. R&Q is superior in dimensional stability and should seriously be considered if you go with solid wood and 5" or wider planks. Anything over 8' in length is probably overkill unless you have huge rooms or very wide hallways where it might show. I installed a mixed width and I don't care for the 7" wide by 1' long. It seems out of proportion. Average length is the key and look for 4'-5'. An 8' long by 8" wide is actually as large as I would recommend for a typical remodel because of access (unless the wood comes in through the windows). Does anyone have a travertine floor in your kitchen?

msrose: the Taj majal is gorgeous and right in line with everything I am drawn to for my countertops (I am also remodeling my powder room which also has the travertine floors). So, I think my travertine is the same as the one you are considering. We installed it about a year ago. I absolutely loved it until I started planning my kitchen and powder room remodel. I, too, considered wood as my alternative, but ended up with travertine because of 1) cost and 2) pool. The kids are constantly running in the house dripping wet. Regardless, at this point, I honestly wish I had chosen wood. It is sooo much easier to coordinate countertops, paint, and backsplash tiles with. In addition, I have read on numerous design blogs that the travertine is associated with the tuscany look which is trending out. I am not a trendy person, but we will likely only be in our house for another 8 or so years and need to be considering resale value. With all this said, I love the warmth of travertine and still think mine is beautiful. I will post a link for you in a mintue from a color expert regarding travertine that you might find helpful. We replaced most of the flooring on our main level with site finished 5" red oak earlier this year (upper level and one room remains 2 1/4"), so I don't have any long term experiences yet. However, I did have some of the same concerns that you have. In my attempt to research, I concluded that the homes that tended to have issues were ones where the 5" hardwoods were installed over a crawlspace. I really like the way our floors turned out, but be aware that the board lengths will be shorter than the narrower width planks. We have not yet repainted, so please ignore the battered paint

If you haven't already purchased your flooring material, I encourage you to reconsider the use of engineered flooring. The increased stability of engineered wood versus solid wood makes it a better choice for wide widths.

I have 5" Ipe floors (Brazilian Walnut). This wood is so dense it won't take stain and is impervious to my two labradors' abuse (see tail near bottom)! No way will it warp!

Much darker than Oak, of course...

I have 4" red oak and LOVE the look. We stained it with a 50/50 blend of Golden Oak and English Chestnut and it looks great - brown enough without being too dark, although it does have a heavy grain look, which makes it look like a striped exotic wood.

If you have central air, I don't think you'll have to worry too much about warping, which is exacerbated by extreme humidity. Alternatively, you may want to consider engineered flooring. It looks like solid wood but is not prone to warping (I think).

We just put 4" red oak, so I can't comment as to how well they will hold up, BUT our floor guy told us to order at least quarter sawn, which helps minimize gaps between boards due to swelling and shrinkage according to weather.

A drawback to engineered wood is its ability to be refinished, I believe. You can sand real wood a few times but only once for engineered. Anyone know of this?
