Ikea birch counter tops?

I'm looking at the birch Ikea kitchen counters, the beech and oak I'm not liking much, and the birch is unique.

Being a light color do they become filthy unlike a darker wood?

Did the birch darken or stay light?

Is it as hard as the oak or beech or any other traditional butcher block?

Are you happy with the birch? Thanks!

I heard somebody say that birch will yellow with age. I have the beech, myself. It was meant to be temporary, but it's been in the kitchen for 3 years now. DOH!

If you haven't found ikeafans.com yet, I highly recommend it for reviews and experiences of other ikea folks. Here's a small thread on birch numerar counters including some photos (you will need to register to see them, but it's free like here). Numerar Birch with Waterlox We are also planning to do some big ol' Ikea butcherblock counters, but we are planning to stain ours and then use waterlox for a food safe sealer. I think a lot of people use either waterlox or just plain mineral oil. Waterlox is much better for stain resistance, water resistance and is pretty much a must if you are going to have a sink, particularly an undermount sink.

Yes.. it is resolved, they gave me some money back. They promised they will start supplying all solid wood all through since my incident. You should be able to buy with confidence now. It's not veneer in the sense that it is 1/64" thin, the maple is 1/4" with 1" oak in betweem. It's still very durable. I havn't had a problem with it so far. Not that I need to talk about my fix anymore because no one else should encounter this now. It is important you use the butcherblock right away because I waited a bit too long and the store manager was being difficult with me. It took combined effort of the GW "angry mob" until I got a call from their corporate guy :) BTW love my wood counter top, the "sound" especially. This one island counter I created from the LL BB, if I didn't tell, you wouldn't know there is oak inside.

rmancuso - I just finally got samples of a bunch of quartz and brought it home with the ikea door to see in my apartment. Glad I did - I took the london grey, along with some of the recommendations above and some other randoms. I ended up liking the london grey the best! It doesn't look the same in an ikea showroom as in your home. Also I find the quartz was more grey/beige tone then bright white as it appeared at ikea. On a side note - I like the picture of Jillian Harris's kitchen on the ikea website - there is no where that lists what her counters are. I emailed ikea and they let me know all of the details and they were london grey. http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_CA/SEKTION-kitchen/sektion_inspiration.html?page=2 My biggest recommendation to you is to buy a door at ikes (you can return it) and take out samples of quartz home in your kitchen. Helped a ton!

I just renoed a similar size home. Put new cabs with granite. No laundry though. $9k for remnants and chinese cabs. My last laundry room was $1k for ikea and laminate (probably less actually). Base budget for current build is $35k. A bit more square footage but it would scale down to $28k for you. So my suggested range is $10k to $28k. Helpful? probably not but really the best I can do. Add 20% for HCOLA. What you can do from plans is get linear feet of cabs. That helps. Island? Paint vs stain? Crown/end panels etc? Custom panels for appliances? Ceiling height and plan for uppers (stacked/tall uppers etc). But most importantly is expectation on door complexity and degree of customization.

Several people here have finished their Numerar Counters with Waterlox Â some also stained them. They are GEORGOUS! I hope some of them post here with pictures for you.

clg7067, i just posted about Ikea cabinets, and I was the one with the yellowing-birch experience. The cabs have been in direct sunlight for ten years and have darkened and yellowed considerably. I have no experience with their birch when its out of the sunlight and on a countertop.

Bumping this up to the top because I would love to hear more about these countertops...it seems to me like a beautiful, affordable option! I like the oak because it's the darkest of the choices, but if anyone out there has one and stained it, please tell us about it!
