30 inch sink cabinet

One or two bowl sink?

I think the double bowl will be too small and not as convenient as one big one but DH insists double is the way to go...

Any input or opinions?

I have had, and am getting again, a single bowl.
Since I have a dishwasher and really only use the sink for small jobs, I prefer a sink that I can put cookie sheets and large pans in all the way. In the past 20 years I just haven't missed a second bowl.

Who spends the most time at the kitchen sink? I think that person should have the deciding vote.

Just my opinion.

If you do a search there's lots of discussions on this forum about the issue. Most prefer a large single. But it comes down to what works best for you.

Hi Scrappy, Turning the sink around enabled the disposal and drain trap to be in a single plane. If the drain had been at the back, the trap would have had to go either left or right, and would have interfered with the deep drawers and garbage cans. I'm out of town so can't measure the sink, but I'm pretty sure the depth is 10" (excluding the depth given by the countertop). We installed the Badger compact disposal. I am on septic, so it gets very light use. Yes, I think the same set-up could be accomplished with a 30" sink. If this is your main sink and you have a DW, keep in mind that you will have to allow for the connection of the DW to the drain. The hose might interfere with one of the pull-outs. Sorry, my contractor has moved to Florida.

Thanks for all your suggestions. and Thank you EATREALFOOD: I am actually leaning toward the Franke Orca ORX110. It's gorgeous - if sinks can actually be gorgeous. I like the idea of being able to put a drainer or whater on one side when I need it and not have it there all the time so that i can still wash the large cookie sheets, roasters, etc. The interior at the largest point is 29.5 x 18.75 which I like. I also like the flow of the offset as it looks a little different than a single rectangle since hubby really wants his granite or quartz! now i need suggestions regarding which way to go with the stone countertops! i would either go for a treated granite (sensa) that doesn't need sealing for 15 years or the quartz. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

From what I understand, the inside measurement of the IKEA 30" base is 28.5", so if your sink's outside bowl dimensions are less than that, you should be fine. On the Ikeafans forum, they talk about fitting sinks in various bases all the time-- they modify the cabinets quite a bit on that site, including notching the sides to fit sinks.

Now you're getting into the design aesthetics of the kitchen. How important is it for you to have that specific tap. If you plan on it being a show piece then you have to show it off and putting it underneath cabinets in a cramped position is not going to do it. If you want to show it off - then raise the cabinets which makes sense anyway, and put glass doors in them OR put some higher open shelves above the sink - maybe 2 of them. Then you are creating a focal point for the tap. If the storage is more important than the tap then I would suggest a lower tap to avoid the cramped feeling. But raising the cupboard level over the sink is a good idea to avoid bumping your head and the claustrophobic feeling which may develop.

Do they make doubles that small? I'm switching over to a large single bowl for flexibility. I think, after much reading here, that we will ove it. Won't know for another two weeks or so.

I have a double bowl now, and will put a double bowl offset in my new kitchen (link below). I'm having cabinets built, and the cabinet maker will measure the sink to make sure the sink cab is wide enough - if it isn't 30", it will be awfully close. I wanted a 30" sink base to maximize the storage on either side.

The large bowl in the new sink is larger than my current sink. The garbage disposal will be in the smaller one. We don't have a prep sink, and I want access to the disposal when there are dishes in the sink.

A standard double sink fits in a 36" sink cabinet. Each bowl is too small to fit a large baking pan flat. A 30" sink base can theoretically fit a 27" sink. I say theoretically, because that's not a standard size sink. A single 25" is a standard size sink. Single. If you split that size sink into two bowls, they'd be small bar sink size. Unusable.

So, if hubby insists on a double sink, you need a larger sink cabinet.
