Countertop help please!

I had alot of trouble picking out my countertops because I really love the white on white look of many of the gorgeous kitchens posted here but I have antique white cabinets so the white/grey marble countertops looked terrible. I finally decided on "white Rhino",(aka mystery white or bianco rhino). I brought home a nice slab to test for staining and I can't tell you how many people have said, "THAT'S what you're PICKING?!?" The last straw was when the cabinet guy came today to do the template and said the same thing! I am supposed to have them cut in a day or two but now am unsure if I'm making a mistake here. Please tell me what you think, it won't hurt my feelings! My goal is a classy but beautiful kitchen that wows people. Thank you sooo much for your help!

Has anyone said why they responded the way they did? I mean, it looks nice to me but I'm no granite expert.

Try Imperial danby danby eureka. I think that will look nice too!

If you haven't already, I suggest posting this on the "Discussions" side of Kitchens. This is the "Conversations" side that's for off-topic, general conversation types of topics. The Discussions side of Kitchens is for on-topic discussions concerning kitchen remodels. You will most likely get many more responses over there. Good luck!

OK, I think I may not have read this carefully enough... your leading candidates are a warm white cabinet, black granite and Calacatta (Gold) BS, and a walnut island and Dreamy Marfil? I love Dreamy Marfil -- I think it is the most realistic of the patterned quartz available. An alternate choice on the island might be Taj Mahal quartzite. Yes, it is a little bolder but not that much. I think both would play off the golden hues in the BS. I'm not the biggest fan of black granite, as I'm living with it in our 2nd home (for the same reasons as pipdog). Do you have a picture of your BS and counters and sample doors together? It really helps to put together samples together and to take pictures of them in similar light conditions. I've even taken my samples to the store or slabyard, dragged everything into good light, and taken pictures. I also composed mood boards, but had six or seven different ones.

Thank you for all the positive support! I really appreciate it - I think the freak out was mostly about the stress of building a house in general. Now that we are in the final stretches the decisions have really piled up on us. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm the only one who has to love it!

I couldn't fix my granite so I have decided on a few options, I would love any input!! My husband likes the Quartz LG Everest the one on the right. I was thinking about black on the perimeter and one of the white quartz on the island. Any thoughts or new ideas. TIA:) Different angle: I really like this granite as well but it seems my husband might not like the linear style granite it's called Ivory Cream:

Well, a few (all men) have said it doesn't match, needs more contrast and looks boring. The sample piece didn't have alot of the veining in it and it looked mostly white so I just told myself if they could see the actual slab (pictured) with more beige marbling they might feel differently. I have looked at some of the danby marble but couldn't find one with enough gold or warm undertones. I will look up imperial and eureka, Thank You!!!

I guess the main thing is if you like it..You have to go with your gut, but it seems you are a bit ambivalent about it..
Have you tried something with a bit more contrast...I think it would really make those cabinets pop..but that is my taste..
You might try it to see if you like it..My advise is if you still prefer the one you chose..go for it...You are the one who lives with it....

From what I can tell, it's subdued and pretty, and you're making a good choice. It does look like marble, but less grey, you're right!

I don't really understand why they're saying, "you're getting THAT?"

You should be really excited about your stone. It's going to last a long time. If you love it, get it.

Having said that... I once saw a leathered light granite. I think it was Kashmir Cream or something like that. It was gorgeous. It looked almost like a marble, but creamy and with more colors. Have you seen any leathered or honed light granites that would have more of the tones you're looking for?

I think it looks pretty and subdued. The question is...do you love it? Make sure you love it. You want your countertop to make you smile :-)

The cool responses were bugging me, so I did some googling. Is this what you are going for?

Yes!!! I love that look! Exactly what I was going for!

I think contrast can be overrated. I like the tone on tone appearance.

k - well the picture I posted is marble, so it's grayer. And the cabs seem a bit yellower.

I like the whiter part of the granite against your cabs (as opposed to the beige-ier part) because there's a little more contrast.

Are you the cabinet guy's personal decorator? Is he paying for the kitchen? You give him final approval on your choices?

From the pic you posted, your slab works. The marble gives that same softy, misty look. What you're trying to do is the OTK with a slight color shift toward yellow, and that's what you've got.

I think they look really pretty together.

I found a slab that looked very similar to that at a VERY expensive slab yard. I LOVE it. The piece I was looking at had depth and sparkle but was ridiculously expensive- so out of my price range. I was looking to put it with creamy ivory cabinets as well which is why I think it looks so beautiful with your cabinet sample. I really love it but YOU need to love it. I think "quiet" stones can be especially classy and gorgeous. Good Luck!

I also love the white on white tone on tone look. I love your choice, it looks nice with your cabinets and I think will make them look really classy. Enjoy it in good health. It looks great!

Sigh! (of relief!) Thanks for your all your help everyone and putting it back into perspective for me. I think I just got spooked by all the negative comments(in person, not on here!) I REALLY appreciate all the insight :)

Perhaps the response is due to the combination of the counters/cabinets and the other elements in the kitchen. Tone on tone can work, but it only really works well if there are other elements in the kitchen that will provide the contrast. What are your floors? Your lighting? Your knobs and pulls? Your appliances?

Don't look at just the marble on the cabinets. That's only one part of the whole picture.

I think the cabinet and counter look great together! Very close to the look you have in mind. Maybe the reactions are because they're not so immersed in the white-on-white kitchens we're used to on GW? I was 'informed' while countertop shopping that you 'have to have contrast' between your countertop and your cabinets. Well, yes, a bit...but I prefer the subtle, low-contrast look.

I think it looks great. I think the cool tone on tone and minimal contrast is soothing to the eye. There is enough dimension to be interesting but not enough to be busy. The countertop won't steal the show and will allow the kitchen to shine as an entity. I assume your kitchen has a focal point, that will draw the eye, this countertop will not steal its thunder it will complement it.

You have received lots of good advise, suggestions and qualifications
in the responses to your post. Most important, how does your cabinet and counter combo look in the context of your whole kitchen.
All I can add is that in the little picture you have shown us
the cabinet and counter choice look soft, lovely, and truly yummy together.

I think you have already gotten all the affirmation you need on this thread, but I just wanted to add mine. I have the same trepidation about my choice. It doesn't mean we don't love it, it just means when doing our own "designing" we lack confidence. I finally made my choice this past week and went with Danby Olympian and still feel weak in the knees about it. My big fear is all my friends know I have been looking for a counter top piece for MONTHS and I worry when they see my new counter they will think "it took her nearly a year and THIS is what she decided on". Hah! Some of us can be easily shaken! Join the club. Glad you feel better about your choice. I, too, want the classic white (I have an old farmhouse & think it will look best). I can only add you might search this site for ALABAMA WHITE. Look @ one titled THE END IS NEAR. It is a gorgeous cream cabinet filled kitchen w/white & grey marble, which is the same colorway you have, I believe. It gave me confidence to go ahead w/my choice knowing that counter would look great with warm tones. So glad your decision is made (mine, too)! This is HARDER than it looks!

    Jen: One word only: SWOON!

As previously mentioned, your counter choice doesn't happen in a vacuum. If you have light beige floors, white or light beige walls, and are choosing something like a satin nickel for your hardware, the whole room is way way too monochromatic and blah. You do need some dark elements in every room in order to ground it and provide the contrast that lets the monochromatic elements really be appreciated. You can get that grounding and contrast from using darker floors, or a separate furniture element like an island or cherry wood hood, or even your appliances like a black and brass Viking range as the focal point. But, having all light tone on tone without that true focal point, that's complete snoozeville.

You're so right, I should've mentioned that I have all stainless appliances (not installed yet) and natural wood floors (honey toned, I REALLY wanted dark but my dh (a realtor) vetoed them for resale). I haven't picked any lighting, faucets, hardware or counterstools yet. I don't have anything really fabulous in my kitchen but I would like the focal point to be the peninsula seating area (we knocked out the wall between the kitchen and dining room). We live in a New England Coastal town and I would say the rest of the home def has a coastal vibe(think p.barn seagrass furniture). I like the subway tile but was thinking a mother of pearl/onyx backsplash might step it up a notch. I think that might be the problem, I don't have anything to anchor the room or a true focal point as suggested. I don't have a seperate island, only a stainless hood or a great range, any ideas to still get the effect? I certainly am not going for snoozeville!: ) Thank you!!!! Jem-love your kitchen and the suggested one, def gives me hope, I just need to figure out how to tie it all together I think! Thx!!

I can see why you're getting the in person reaction here to your counter choice. At this point, all of your choices are light with zero dark elements. Can the floor go darker, to a brown out of the light "honey" color range? Could you change out your range to black? Or choose a black iron or dark ORB chandelier for the peninsula? Black hardware? Or choose a dark grey or cherry for a hutch feature? A walnut counter for the peninsula? A bark brown iridescent mother of pearl backsplash? Chocolate walls?

You need to do an idea board with all of these choices in it together to get the full effect. And then figure out where you can put in the needed darker elements.

    yes, jem - swoon!

kitkat - are your cabinet doors glazed (it looks like it in the pic)? just curious.

They are glazed, I was just starting to think maybe that was hindering me from achieving the look I have in mind, I noticed the other posts are just a pure buttery, antique white. My cabinets don't really have any yellow tones. I'm hoping I can pull it all together like Greendesigns suggested by choosing the right hardware, lighting over the peninsula and counterstools. I was originally thinking brushed nickel hardware to match the stainless appliances but now I think I may need to go dark to anchor everything as suggested. I will take a few more pics tmrw, thanks again everyone!

Oh, no, this is not MY kitchen! I only WISH it was MY kitchen~ My apologies. THIS IS phorbin's BEAUTIFUL KITCHEN. I just remembered it was cream cabinets and how great it looked with the white/grey marble so wanted to show it to you. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

can you shoot some pictures from a different angle? It's hard to see the glaze you are speaking of with some concern in the photo above. I'm always on the fence about glaze with nixing them altogether most often, but sometimes I like them. Is there any way to lay the door flat on the marble sample? I love the marble btw!

Here's some more pics, trim and windows not painted yet,no lights over peninsula seating area or sink yet, changing sliders in dining room to french doors, haven't decided on hardware yet...

Here is a link that might be useful: http://photobucket.com/kitkat007

Oh, and the brushed nickel hardware on the cabinets in the pic was just to test, not sure what finish to use...

Kitkat- I think ( i am a little biased) that danby would work really nice. It has some of the light browns and creams, so it would compliment your cabinets. I also think the dark floors would really look great, I disagree on re-sale with dark floors as in the area we live everyone seems to put them in these days (jacobean or ebony or a nice mix?) I do not have glazed cabinets, but I will attach a quick pic of the cabinetry and counters (my kitchen is not finished by any means, still need floor stain, backsplash, hardware and some appliances but it will give you a little idea!)
Where are you located? I bought my slabs in Massachusetts and the place I bought mine are getting some more slabs in soon!

Kamkar2006- highjacking a bit...sorry...your kitchen is beautiful. Where in Mass did you find your slabs? I just had a fabricator in MA quote me almost 120 a sq ft installed for a less expensive marble and I am a bit shocked. It's the first fabricator I've gone to, so I'm hoping that's not what I can expect everywhere. I don't even have a lot of cutouts....

Secondhalf- bought slabs from marble and granite in westwood. I am now realizing we got quite a good deal. Send me a message and I will let you know who we used and the cost.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me how this turned out for you!! I could've written your post just this week, and am considering switching to quartzite after my fabricator told me "as a friend I won't install this for you" he is thinking the african white is like "sugar marble" and won't cut well at the seams....any insight you can give me is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! thank you....
