16 gauge sink with sink seam on marble?

Anyone have a warning against this? We are installing marble countertops and I would like a 16 gauge sink, but worry that the extra 10 lbs or so may put unnecessary strain on the seam.

If your sink is undermount, then it should be supported from underneath in which case there will be little or no strain on you countertop.

Considering that if you fill your sink to a depth of 6", the water will weigh over 100 lbs., I don't think it much matters.

The lower the number (or gauge) the less likely for denting (the harder it is). You can dent anything :) Just ask DH who has done a number or two on my car :oP But as sherilynn notes from her iron skillet experience, 16 gauge sinks are pretty darned tough. Worst case scenario...a stainless manufacturer can get a dent out of anything...but would it be worth the cost once installed???? Maybe not, maybe, just depends on how hard you throw that skillet I guess :)

Is your ticor sink the 405? Can't find it anywhere. Galaxy tools have them backordered till early Dec "IF" they arrive, could be held up in customs so he says. I am scared to take the chance and my fabricator really wants to get going. My other choices are the Kohler 3099 D sink which is quite pricey (anyone have one installed?) or an off brand from Builders spec that is basically the same size as the Ticor except overall width is a little smaller. It is from Italy and the salesgal online says people rave about the sink. Decisions, decisions............. If anyone knows of an available Ricor 405 please let me know, doesn't look like overstock has the right one.

In my business, the cabinet installer sets the farm sink or apron front sink. Then the quartz or granite (or whatever) tops are templated with the sink in place by the countertop fabrication company. Two weeks later, they set the tops....then I send out the plumber for the hookup.

Are you sure about the 10 lbs? I cannot imagine how the difference between a 16 gauge sink and an 18 gauge sink (of the same size) could create a 10 lb. difference.

BTW, my sink is 14 gauge, and the installer did not complain that it was heavy, and there's never been a problem with it. Also, you should see all the people on this Forum with marble countertops and either fireclay or enameled cast iron sinks. Those sinks weigh several times more than your 16-gauge stainless sink.

Is there anyway they can move the seam to the left or right of the sink? I'm not a huge fan of sink seams as not every fabricator/installer is great with seams and if the seam fails, you don't want it right at your sink. Additionally, depending on the seam, all the extra wiping of the strip of counter in front of the sink may inadvertently accelerate the deterioration of a poorly done seam and filler.
