It's the wrong recipe, and it's gone wrong! - Crab Cakes
Comments (24)Lou, I have a similar recipe that I use for deviled crab, and I have also substituted canned tuna for the crab with good results as well. It is also baked and then broiled. I'll have to try the salmon recipe, although I really like Marilyn's fresh salmon cakes, and I had no problem with hers falling apart. I'll have to look at her recipe again. I have a feeling now that it was the type of bread I used, as rococogurl suggested. And the recipe does call for fresh bread crumbs as opposed to dried ones. The end result was still very good, even though it was difficult to get them to stick together. I'm considering adding a bit of potato starch to the insides to see if that will make them "stickier". Carol, I had saved your recipe before (it was one of only two that I had saved), but I neglected to look at it before I started. I'll try yours next time, as it looks really more like what I wanted, which is why I saved it in the first place. As for the recipe from the Anapolis native (I saved that one also) - what is regular mustard? My first thought is that it is dried, but it might mean prepared mustard. Crab meat is so cheap right now that I will be making more variations. The first batch of cakes I did not refrigerate, but the second batch had been refrigerated over night, and it had the same problem. I'm pretty sure it is the type of bread, which gave an excellent flavor, BTW. Thanks for all the help! Lars...See MoreWhat's Wrong w/ Dishwasher in Corner?
Comments (6)I kind of agonized over this. The recommendation is to leave 21" between DW and corner so someone can stand in between DW and corner cabinet to unload dishwasher. I didn't follow the recommendation and put DW in the corner with a 3" filler between a blind corner cab and dishwasher. Don't skimp on the filler! You need it to make sure everything opens correctly. My parents' dishwasher has 2" filler or less and everything scrapes, it's horrible. My personal experience with this setup: I don't mind it. Two people still unload the dishwasher, one from the side and one from the front. Two cabinets behind the dishwasher (in the corner) are completely inaccessible when DW is open. I didn't store dishes in them for that reason. Remember the DW door may protrude as much as 30" when open, so it can block up to 54" of cabinet run in total. This setup does encourage me to close the DW door more often so I can get to the corner (my coffeemaker is in that corner so I need FREQUENT access -- maybe a little too frequent!). Because I do find myself needing to close the DW to get to the corner, it is a little inconvenient when open, so that is a tradeoff. If I could have had a longer run with the recommended clearance I would have, but it was totally worth it to me to get DW beside sink and out of the prep area. Plus the kitchen looks cleaner when the DW is closed all the time....See MoreMicrofiber cloth
Comments (8)Yep, they have a "grippy" feel to them. My son refuses to fold them, because he hates the way they cling to his hands! Do NOT wash them with your towels, you will never get them separated. I have a bunch and wash them on their own. If you have a Sams Club membership, you can get huge packs of them there for $10, its' a terrific deal. Otherwise I've also seen them at Walmart. You can check in at the Cleaning Forum, too--if you search on Microfiber you'll get tons of ways people use them. I love 'em, and use them for all sorts of things--I have yellow for icky jobs and green for dusting/cleaning things that are not icky. Comments (20)I doubt your realtor is a Medicare expert, so don't rely on such advice. First you should be talking to someone at your local Area Agency on Aging, to get some specifics on how your state Medicaid program works in regards to your MIL's financial/physical situation. Second, the five-year lookback period for Medicaid is the Federal requirement; individual states may impose additional limitations because Medicaid is funded 50-50 between state and the federal governments, unlike Medicare which is 100% federal. Many facilities will accept paying patients, then when the patient's personal funds run out they apply to Medicaid. Most high-end facilities will not take Medicaid-only patients because of the low rate of reimbursement. Be aware that if a facility closes down, it can be a scramble to find a place to move your family member, especially if they are on Medicaid reimbursement by then. The first thing you should do is contact your bank or whatever financial institution you want to use for a new mortgage. Ask them for the referral to the loan appraiser they prefer to use, because a lot of banks will not do business with just any appraiser. Pay for the appraisal (you would probably be responsible for this anyway; many banks don't absorb the cost any longer) on your MIL's house. It will be brutally fair and will take into account whatever has sold in the last 60 days - meaning short sales and foreclosures. The maximum your MIL can discount to you is 20% off that appraisal price, according to the IRS. Then, and only then, should you two decide whether selling your home is a reasonable consideration. You may wish to have the appraiser do both your MIL's home and your own condo at the same time - negotiate on this! - which will give you firm figures to work with. If you need to sell your condo very quickly, you are going to have to consider discounting that appraisal price for a fast sale. This can be done, but it isn't quick or simple. And you have to do it correctly or both the IRS AND Medicaid will be on your backs, and you don't want/need to be in that position. The process I've outlined above is my own understanding of the Medicaid and IRS rules, so be sure to confirm those assumptions are valid....See Moreplllog
