Bin Pulls Again - Do we have a winner? (pics)
Comments (32)deb52899 - Thanks for your reply! I'm so glad you like A too. We are definitely going with it. (Another decision made! Hooray!) And thanks for the photo - your kitchen is lovely! jalsy6 - Thanks for your kind reply! I love the exposed screw look too! (And I don't plan on telling any of our guests that they are decorative. That will be Gardenweb's secret! Shhhhh. Lol!) jgs7691 - Thanks for your vote and reply! I ended up discarding "C" b/c it didn't fit with my original vision. (I have always pictured cup pulls and round knobs.) It is a very pretty look, and I wanted to give it a chance (hence the mockup), but it just didn't feel right for me. So glad you love your Top Knob hardware (and even their customer service)! I am thoroughly impressed with our Top Knobs sample too. The quality is by far the best of all of the samples that we have. I couldn't find your Somerset pulls. What is the model #? lynn2006 - Hello again! How is your kitchen planning going? Thanks so much for your vote and compliment! Our kitchen should be photo ready this weekend, so I'll take some more photos for you from different angles. While I would Love to get rid of our soffit, we don't have the budget to move the plumbing and electric, so it's staying for now. Have you looked at photos of kitchens with soffits vs kitchens without them? Or even a computer rendering of your kitchen with and without soffits (that would be best) - this way you could decide if the expense is worth it for you. Best wishes!...See MoreWhich bin pull works best? (pics)
Comments (30)abfabamy - Ooh - interesting suggestion! I'll ask DH if he thinks that would help. And I'm glad you don't think the pull is too small. I'm sure once the hardware is settled, I probably won't give it another thought. (Ahhh - won't that be nice!) Thanks so much for your reply! I have a bad habit of needing to weigh out every option, and "seeing" it. (Probably the Libra in me!) And so, I played around some more in Photoshop and made a version with longer pulls on the middle 24" wide drawers, plus a mixed style version suggested by dianalo. And so... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Do any of these look like they work best? Or is this all still just a matter of opinion (not right vs wrong) - and I need to somehow make up my own mind? Lol! I did decide that I like how it looks centered best (a small step!) - Bigger pics of each option are in my flickr photostream in case they are too tiny below And, I have to give credit to tinker_2006. I based the bar pull mockup on her beautiful mixed hardware style kitchen. tinker_2006's kitchen (hope it's okay to repost her Gardenweb pic here - if not, I will take it down) Thank you all, once again!!...See MoreTrash cans on the kitchen floor vs. a cabinet pull out
Comments (15)sw_in_austin..I had forgotten about the dirty wall behind the trash can! We also had a stand alone trash can in our old kitchen. Like sw_in_austin the wall behind it would need constant cleaning b/c my DH & then DS & DD would "shoot" the trash into the can from half-way across the room (too much basketball in our family!). We used to take the trash out every day or two. Recyclables were kept in the garage in 3 separate containers...glass/plastic, newspapers, cardboard. Recyclables would either sit on the counter until someone took time to take them to the garage or they just go thrown out b/c it was easier. With the remodel, we put in an 18" double-bin trash pullout. The bins are 35qts each. The front bin is for trash, the back is for recyclables. I find that we recycle a lot more...which reduces the amount of trash. We now put glass/plastic & cardboard in the one bin (our county does mixed recycling). B/c of the increase in recycling, I find that we still only take the trash out every day or two. I wouldn't want the trash around any longer than that b/c it does start to smell. Recyclables, btw, also have to go out every couple of days. As to whether there's a mess on the door, no there isn't. My family no longer treats the trash can as a basket so trash is thrown out w/less force now! There have been a couple of times when something spilled, but we wiped it up right away. As to keeping the trash open while prepping/cooking...if you install a foot pedal you could open it hands-free! (We have the pedal but we haven't installed it yet.)...See MoreKnob, pulls and handles...oh my
Comments (17)We used Jeffrey Alexander Durham cabinet knob and the Bremen 2 pulls in satin nickel. Function/Cleaning: Cup pulls weren't going to work for us because I thought they'd get dirty up in the cup area and be hard to clean. We didn't want anything that had protruding parts that would snag on clothing and backpacks, or poke your hip or leg as you walk by. This was important to us bc the kitchen is also the entertainment/great room and there are always tons of people over here and we have a large family. Maybe the snagging issue would not be a big deal for some families. DH thought I was being obsessive choosing on that basis. Some knobs feel sharp around the edges, and some pulls feel sharp in the back or on tops and bottoms of the bar. So we chose some that are softer around the edges. Some knobs didn't have enough clearance for fingers to wrap around when you pull it. People tend to grab the pulls with the fronts of their fingers rather than wrapping their whole hand around it, so the clearance issue wasn't a criteria for us on the pulls. We actually ended up with pulls that were a little shallower than some of the options because I didn't want them sticking out too far. You can hold them up free-hand or screw them into a piece of scrap wood and tug on them to test how they feel. Looks: I'd say the only real rule is that you like them. We didn't want to see the exposed screws on the outside of the cabinet, so we chose ones that the screw goes in from the back. I do like when the finish matches, so picking knobs and pulls from the same company would probably be a good idea if you want to be sure the finish is the same. Size: As far as the sizes, we eye-balled that to get the right proportions with the widths of the drawers, but they ended up about a third of the width of the drawers. 3 of my really large and wide drawers have 2 pulls. If you can't get samples, you can put painter's tape in various sizes on the drawers to figure out what you like. There are so many to choose from you just have to figure out your function issues first (cleaning, snagging, comfort), then go with ones that you find attractive....See Morekatiee511
