Can I mix polished and tumbled marble in backsplash?

Finally, my kitchen is almost done. It's very traditional, with stained maple cabinets and wooden hood with arch, honed limestone floors, Madura Gold granite countertops.

The last hurdle: designing the backsplash. What I'd like is a framed (in cream/gold-ish tones) harlequin design under my hood and a light coordinating 4x4 field tile to go with it --preferably in a honed stone, but the closest harlequin pattern I've found is by Walker Zanger in polished marble. The style is called Opus Antico -- they are small 1-1/4 by 2 inch harlequins in Dore Royal and light travertine. Problem is, I can't find a honed marble to go with this (I wouldn't want more polished). The question -- finally -- is will polished marble look strange with a tumbled marble field tile.

I know I should post photos and if I can figure out how I will.

Thanks, and any other backsplash ideas, photos would be much appreciated.

I don't see why not. It would seem to me that each would provide a nice contrast to the other making both stand right out. It would most CERTAINLY be an attention getter!! Too bad you're not up here!! I'd LOVE to install it!!

Marcy96, Love your space. Beautiful! ~boxer Hi Maryb2010, When I first started thinking about my reno. I had a few specific ideas, after 4 months those ideas changed. The more I am around kitchens, looking for my own planning, helping others, ides on GW... the more I see things I love and those ideas I had when I started have faded or changed. One way to start is to figure out your "Do or Die" list. What do you love? And it does not matter who else loves it but you and your DH of course. And from there plan your space. The Sweeby test is a great tool to help you figure out what your "Do or Die" is. It sounds like you love white, cottagey and that is a super start. And a search through FKB (Finished Kitchens Blog) on GW will help with seeing what others have done. FKB can give you ideas and help those creative juices spark. Thanks to all so much -- annekendo -- that kitchen blog was so impressive. I'm trying to imagine a whole kitchen remodel for $12,500! Bill -- your quilt design is just another example of your work that is just incredible. Your clients are very lucky, indeed. From what you have both shown, custommade harlequins would be an option if I can't find what I want. I actually have much of my limestone tile left that I could perhaps incorporate. If I could find honed marble 4x4s to go with the WZ Dore Royal and Ligt Travertine polished marble harlequins I found, I think I would be in good shape. All along I was sure I would go with tumbled, but after my kitchen came together I thought it might be too busy with my granite, floor, etc. What do others think after looking at my pictures? Thanks!

You're at an advantage since you have the materials on hand to look at them together. It's generally recommended to keep similar finishes to help tie a room together, but you can always branch out if you like the look.

It clashes horribly. You have to vote one off of the island. If you keep the backsplash, you can’t use that counter. You need a more solid quartz with it. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish over $300 worth of tile here. The $1800 install labor for the professional tiler is where the big expense will be. Sell it on Craigslist.

Jshore -- you are right. In fact artTeacher NJ's kitchen is what caught my eye. It looks beautiful in her kitchen with her white cabinets-- not sure how it would look in mine, or how I would tie the polished and tumbled marble together.

I just installed a similar backsplash. Harlequin in Dore Royal with small walker zanger anique offset tiles,can't remember the name. I used a 6x6 tumbled around the perimiter of the kithchen. We just moved in, I will be posting pictures in a day or too as soon as I can find the camera. I think it looks very nice.
