Kitchen sneak peek/ Backsplash opinions
Comments (27)I chose to do snow white for the grout (debated between that and the bright white). I'll post a picture after it's grouted. Francoise...the corner cabinet is going to stay open. That was a last minute change to our plan when our cabinet maker suggested an articulated door for the corner uppers. I don't care for the function/feel of a hinged door so I spontaneously decided to have an open corner. I tweaked it a bit after seeing remodelqueen's corners on the hidden gems thread and set it back an inch so it wouldn't look like a cabinet without doors (boy do I love this website!). I'll post more pictures of the cabinets once everything is in....See Moresneak peek at counter install
Comments (29)My stove will be placed better tomorrow and hopefully, hooked up! I will take some pix but she is a little shy because she needs a really good cleaning and polishing effort. She had been waiting in our garage for 4 years and it shows. This is how she looked in her previous home: Our counters give a marble type vibe, but no one will be fooled in person. Our kitchen look is supposed to be unassuming and modest, so I think that this may actually achieve our look better than marble. Don't get me wrong, I love marble and used it in our master bath. It is one of my fave parts of the reno. I can post a sneak peek at that, but the sink/toilet/faucet will be installed tomorrow too. The floor was missing a tile, the hardware has changed and the walls have been painted, but this is the basic look:...See MoreAfter 9 months...a sneak peek
Comments (23)Thank you, everyone! :-) jerzeegirl - yes, the cabs are custom. The man who demo'd and then rebuilt our addition is a cabinet-maker by trade, so this is his "thing". He has been great - I must have changed the layout and the cabs vs. drawers about 10 times, and he never changed the price. His original rendering/bid had all cabs with just a few drawers - we moved it to all drawers for the lowers. No price change. I asked for pullouts - no price change. Under-sink "drawers" that look like cabs - no price change. The inside of the drawers are made of maple, with rounded edges and dovetailed joints. We're so pleased! The hinges on the cabs are soft-close, as are the drawer slides. Awesome! :-) sochi - it's a plain wall on either side. I wanted to highlight the cooktop/vent area and not compete with the somewhat "busy" laminate countertop on either side. I've always liked plain painted walls, so we'll stick with that for now. mtnfever - yep, used Circuspeanut's instructions exactly! It was a lot of fun, and it's really interesting to see it change each day. This morning when I got up, there were "patinaed" lines that represented last nights wipe-down before bed (sometimes I follow with a dry cloth, but I'm trying to train myself to just "live" in the kitchen rather than baby it, cuz we're not the type to baby our belongings. Might as well get it worn in now! Closer pictures of the backsplash - but the quality isn't great. My camera battery is dead, so this is cellphone quality again... From Temp From Temp The lightskirt still has to go on the upper cabs, but you get the idea....See Moresneak peek --new/old gumwood kitchen
Comments (25)Thank you again -- have been sharing these responses with DH who is just tickled to hear them. He is mighty tired at this point but all of your praise has energized him to start thinking about that island . . . Answers to questions Kaismom -- you're correct -- when we moved in to the house the lowers were too shallow to house contemporary appliances so we had a carpenter pull them out but we didn't rebuild them in any fundamental way. Inside they were just big empty cubes. Now we have pullouts and more useable storage in less space. Theresse, we totally dismantled the cabinets. We built the two class cupboards from scratch using old wood, and we reused the old leaded glass doors. You can see in the before photos that in the original uppers the cames did not align with the shelves. Just one of those little things that always bothered me. We fixed that! We used doors from above the old cooktop to make the new lower cabinet on the far left-- these had to be taken apart and resized. The sink wall, not visible in this photo, is new build using old wood. For example, DH made a panel for the integrated dishwasher using a center panel (cut to size and framed) from an old door we bought at salvage. The doors under the sink are original but had to be made smaller to fit under the apron sink. So, most of the time even what we repurposed had to be remade to fit the layout and the appliances. Only two of the cabinets on the other side of the room were left as-is, just refinished. We also took out an old doorway (door was long gone) and built an eyebrow arch that matches the contour of the arches in other rooms. We added crown molding and floor molding out of old gumwood as well. We kept the Lightolier tracks but replaced the old cans with new MR16 fixtures. We kept the built-in refrigerator (we put this in about 15 years ago, building an enclosure) but gave it new steel panels. We kept the pot rack! We kept some of the original hardware (latches and hinges) but added new pulls. Thanks again for all the comments! They are helping us gear up for the final spurt!...See MoreRelated Professionals
