Happy FathersDay to those applicable!

I've looked at Bill's backsplash gallery (fantastic!) and tried searching a bit more. I remember seeing some backsplash examples with the tiles done on the diagonal and square inserts, and then diagonal with diagonal inserts? and then horizontal tiles with diagonal inserts... get my drift? I need this to help me visualize the difference in the patterns. (also scale...4" tiles with 1" inserts, 4" tile with 2" inserts, get the drift? I also am wondering if anyone has used the inserts with 2 different colors? muchas gracias

If you've lookd at my gallery, then I've got nothing to add. :-) I've got two i'm doing this week, but one's almost a carbon copy of one already in the gallery. The other, I'll add, probably tuesday evening.

Thanks- I thought I remembered some extra pix that were posted. I see these which show the diagonal field tiles and the insert done on the square. Anybody have some with the square tiles and the diagonal insert?
Also-- at least from the ones I have observed, I think that 4" tile and 2" inserts (again, at least from BV gallery) look heavy; the 1"insert looks more pleasing to my eyes. IS that scale done more commonly ?

I was there when he started putting down the CBU (I helped put in the Nuheat), asked why he didn't put thinset b/t the OSB and Hardi b/c that's what the Hardi instructions said to do. DB and I had just done the bathroom less than 2 months b4. Anyway, guy said he's been doing this for 35 yrs (yeah, the wrong way!) and put plenty of screws in, it'll be fine. Then when I noticed the problems 6 months later he said it was structural, then when he finally came out (3 months after that) to fix it he said someone walked on it too soon (I made sure all the subs knew the schedule, to my knowledge no one came in w/i 24 hours, after he grouted I came in but only walked where he laid the red rosin paper on and told me I could go). Anyway, the warranty period is long over - should I let him know we've got a new (continguous) area getting loose, try to get him to come back? Even if he won't come back, should I notify him? How long can I live with this? I really am trying to finish the rest of the house, don't want to get into ripping up 400sf of tile in the most-used rooms right now. If I notify him of the continued problems, do I have any recourse to take him to small claims say next year? Or is there a chance that if I replace another 10-15sf tile now, I can get away with it for another couple of years til I finish the master bath (and have someone who knows what they're doing lay new tile), or even another 8-10 years, when we might be doing kitchen reno (new countertops - another installer screw-up, another thread)? I hate to damage the 30sf of Nuheat that I paid the electrician $800 to install to rip up loose tile when the tile over the Nuheat is fine. Thanks

The stone is split-face Quartz with glass inserts. Do you recommend using the Impregnator instead? Absolutely. If it were polished instead of splitfaced, you wouldn't need to seal it AT ALL. Also, make sure when sealing the stone that you wipe the sealer off of the glass. Otherwise it'll turn white on the face of the glass. 1. Attach tiles to the wall using white thinset (any recommendations on a "high quality thin set bonding product"? Any modified thinset will work fine. DO NOT let anyone talk you into using mastic or premixed thinset!! 2. Apply Grout Release grout release = 511 Impregnator 3. Grout using sanded grout (any recommendations?) Not with split faced stone. Definitely use unsanded grout. Sanded won't get into the tight joints. Laticrete or Mapei are my favorites, but just about anything you find at the big box stores will do fine. Other than that, you should be fine.

Kcmmc23- glad to read that you are moving right along and liking the progress. I remember we were both looking into tiles at around the same time. I did order mine before July 4, got them in mid July, and am now waiting for installation. It was to have been started yesterday... but our guy is backed up with his current job. (we really like him and he has done most of our work. he is just not great at estimating time, but we can deal with that because he really does nice work and is very good to deal with). so maybe next week it will be started. you must feel so accomplished. Please post photos when you are done!

Bill! What a timely post this is - I've been meaning to ask you a very similar question. Wish I'd had time to take pictures first. I also have a brick fireplace, unpainted, with a wooden mantle surround. I want to tile it with granite tiles. My questions were: 1. Unmodified thinset or modified? I thought you're supposed to use unmodified with stone, but then again, modified on vertical surfaces. Based on your previous answer, I'm guessing modified? Recommendations? 2. The brick is in pretty good shape and smooth, but of course the mortar lines aren't completely even with the brick. Should there be an attempt to fill in mortar lines first, or skim coat, or should back-buttering be sufficient? 3. Caulk in between the wood mantle and brick portion of the fireplace? I know you're supposed to use caulk between wood and tile due to expansion, but wasn't sure how crucial it would be here. I'm horrible at caulking and want the grout lines and caulk lines as small as possible! 4. here's where I really need to take a picture to illustrate... But I have 7 1/2 inches between the surround and the fireplace opening (no metal insert, nothing like that) and 10 1/2 inches from the mantle bottom to the opening. This should make cutting 12 inch tiles really fun, since I can't use whole ones anywhere! I'm unsure whether to just the front or to go in about three inches inside to cover the side of the front brick, which you can see if you're looking at the fireplace from either side. I guess that's what I need to do, I'm just not sure how! Would I lay down thin strips there and caulk between the planes? Obviously, I don't want to get carried away tiling the inside of the fireplace, but I guess I should cover that red brick that's visible. I wish I had a picture ready so you could help me with layout ideas, LOL. I'm thinking I'll go up the sides and all the way to the top with the same width as the sides, and then cut the few tiles in between either side down so that they're equal. Or should I regard that top section as separate from the sides and cut accordingly? In other words, if the width at top is 50 inches, would you have your left and right tile match the 71/2 side legs or address the sides separately? Which will look better. The mantle is white and this is on a gold wall - I'm thinking maybe black galaxy because the black will look great and the gold should complement the wall well, but maybe it will look too showy and I'd be better with something like absolute black? There's a hearth recessed into the wood floor in front of the fireplace and it's multi-color slate. I'm not sure why I'm not continuing the slate, really. Oh, any recommendations for grout if I do the black galaxy?

The smaller dots are actually 3/4", and that's the one I'm doing a carbon copy of tomorrow. I actually recommend against using the 2" dots because of the "heavy" look they have. Or atleast toning it down, and not using so many of them.

I have tumbled 4" mocha tiles which are horizontal with 2" rust colored inserts diagonal. My decorator helped picked the design and I'll have to say, at first I was overwhelmed by the busier look. Now that I am used to it, I love it. Everyone that visits my home says it is the prettiest backsplash they have seen. E-mail me if you would like to see it. jlbtiger@bellsouth.net

I have quite a few pics of backsplashes, lots with 4" and with inserts and a couple of 6"...........but I'm not sure of forum etiquette as to whether I should post a pic of someone elses kitchen : ( But in my opinion the 4" look really nice, not too big or small. Depending on the kitchen 'some' 6" look out of place. I've seen some that are 12" and look fantastic too. Just my preference though.

You could do a mock up with paper cut to the different sizes to get a better visual.

Great! Thank you both for the offer- I have (tried hopefully successfully) emailed you both asking you to share the pix.
I am finetuning my choice and a picture is worth a thousand words for me so thanks. Seems the deco tile I am liking is in 2" so I think I will probably just use it less than I would have with a 1".... but still would love to see pix.

Lookie lookie after google search #5259873 I did find a photo of a diagonal backsplash with the inset tiles on diagonal. I seem to like diagonals.
