Seeking recommendations for custom cabinet makers in San Diego

We purchased a 60Âs ranch that is in desperate need of a new kitchen and baths. When we re-did the kitchen in our last house in 2004, we found a local cabinet and furniture manufacturer that did beautiful custom cabinets with amazing finish details for not much more than non-custom at Home Depot. Unfortunately, they appear to have gone out of business.

I would appreciate any recommendations for custom cabinet makers in the San Diego area.

I used Hanson House Custom Furniture (in Escondido) for a custom bathroom vanity 4 years ago. I still am very happy with the work they did, but I have no idea if they are still around (so many building companies have folded during the recession). Here is the contact information I have:

For our recent kitchen remodel, I needed more help from a GC and chose Cornerstone Kitchens and Baths. They use Hertco cabinets, but you might consider giving them a call if you can't find a custom cabinet maker. (My finished kitchen is in the coming soon kitchens in the FKB if you are interested)

Hi Kaysd,

I am on the east coast but have a sister on the west
coast. I do not have personal experience with the
below but thought I would toss these in from my sister.
I asked my sister to recommend some places she and
her husband have used for remodels on their real estate
ventures.

a fair price. Well they did not use credit cards years
back when she hired them. They match wood amazingly not
sure about new kitchen but expansion and renovation
projects they have been awesome for my sister. Call and
get a quote. They are not in San Diego but worth the
call.

this co. Beautiful work. She said if and when she does
a full kitchen reno she is hiring them.

Mission Pools - Stay away Our familyÂs personal experience - I called into Mission Pools back in April this year to request a repair as part of my tile on the right face of my Mission Pools spa was falling off. I explained this exact sort of thing had happened some time ago (2005) on the left half of the Spa and was repaired after my initial call as a warranty issue in 2005. Now they refuse to repair the exact same of problem under warranty on the right half of the spa and have e-mailed me an excessively high quote for repair of $5,000! This has now become a health and Safety issue as tile is unstable and a hazard to children and adults alike and a liability to our family and Mission Pools as Mr. Dunn (Owner) and their service department are aware of the situation. I have been down this road once before at the time of the construction with Mission Pools. The Spa needed to be completely rebuilt (jack hammered out and completely reformed) due to a poor workmanship, structural issues and irregular forming. I had to go to war with them then and apparently I do now. Bruce Dunn wonÂt give you the time of day until you file a complaint with the California contract licensing board Â Stay away!!

thank you all for the referrals. i will be reaching out to several so keep 'em comin'. i am in particular interested in co's that have demonstrated experience with inset cabinetry and are in the more affordable range :). firsthouse - thanks for the reply on paint color. your house it going to be stunning, can't wait to see the reveal! i emailed my initial kitchen info to precision cabinetry, should know more next week. mrschris- your post cracked me up. i found the budget discoveries horrifying too! glad i can share my horrors / experience with others - it has been an education for me. i will check out the san mateo co on monday. it looks like i will be going with contractor #5 (referenced on a prior post on saga of how to find a good GC). we met again yesterday and are close on the negotiations. thanks to those who posted photos - much appreciated! remodel-mama: i am debating between omega/dynasty semi custom or a local custom job. my thoughts so far: SEMI CUSTOM PROS AND CONS: pro's cost effective - cabinetry will cost less than custom. cons: limited by paint color. i do not really like either of the two whites on dynasty line and labor cost to install smaller sections of modular cabinetry are higher than if i had custom cabinets which will be made in bigger sections. if parts are missing or damaged i would have to wait for a new shipment from mfg who is not local. could cause delay to overall project timeline. CUSTOM PROS AND CONS: pros: can spec out exactly what i want in terms of cabinet design, can get the exact creamy white paint color, labor costs may be slightly less to install, in theory a local cab co should be able to remedy any issues quicker if something comes up on the job during installation. con's: cabinets will be more expensive than semi custom. because i have a small kitchen with not a lot of cabinetry i may be able to squeak by with custom, will have to see how bids come in. will keep you all posted...and thanks again for your posts and insights. i am so glad i found this site! babushka

Yeah, I was going to add Joe Zambrano. I've seen his work at the East Side Studio tour, on AIA tours, etc. Always heard and seen good things. We are using Mill Brothers in Santee and they have been great to work with so far. We are still in the design phase, so I don't have personal experience with their completed work yet. We did choose them after meeting with several companies. Joe at 619-562-6944

Seacoast Cabinets did our friend's kitchen and he did a very nice job. We didn't select him because we preferred a different finish to the cabinets than he could do. He was less expensive, though. Jack at 858-272-4849.

We spoke to Cornerstone Cabinets, as well. Duane was very nice, but they were much more expensive than the custom cabinet shops we met with.

Authentic Designs does some beautiful woodwork. I don't know how budget friendly they are, if that is a consideration for you. 858-487-1066.
