Isn't the Bakersfield sink a drop in, not an undermount? We have the Kohler Lakefield cast iron sink mounted under a chestnut counter. It is not hung from the countertop, it's sitting on the cabinet that is under the sink. Undermounts are great for wood counters. Our faucet is mounted on the chestnut and has been in for about 7 years now. The counter is finished with several coats of Waterlox. This finish has protected the countertop very well in general, but there is a small spot of rot at the base of the faucet where water sat for long periods of time. Be sure to seal the underside of your counter, and any holes you have cut into the countertop. This will prevent warping and other water related problems.

This is an old pic with the sink not mounted. But, it has been 3.5 yrs with just one minor issue. The hole drilled for the Insinkerator air-switch did not have a proper bead of silicone run around the switch bezel once it was put in. After about 3 yrs, I noticed the semi-gloss marine finish was getting lighter in color (indicating water seepage?). Some very light sanding, a dab of finish around it, let it dry and the reseal w/ silicon did the trick. Just make sure there is a good bead of silicon around all edges where the wood meets the sink or the taps. Also, ensure that your wood finish is applied inside the holes after they are drilled for the taps. This also means that you have to plan with the plumber to let it dry first. Finally, make sure that you don's just toss in large pots into the sink and let the handles slam down against the wood lip as they drop in (not an issue with only "responsible" adults in the house!). (the wood is pecan)

I had them in my last house and we spec. them fairly often. They use a good sealer that hold up to water fairly well. If you need perfect all the time or ar fussy then a wood counter and a sink are not for you. A prep sink that gets occasional use will fair better than a cleanup one. You should "maintain" the finish especiallly aroung the sinks if you want that factory look. This will usually require cleaning mabey sanding and scraping and then applying the finish. They used to give you a can with the tops. We've been using a firm out of Germany for our tops lately though, so I 'm not surre if the can comes with anymore.
