Best by Broan vs Broan Elite? Significant difference?

I'm looking at hood inserts/liners/inline blowers and finally called Broan to ask what is the difference (besides the price.) Customer service said minimal differences, ability to upgrade lights in the Best, Best is made in Italy and regular Broan in Canada. Blower and liner are the same. Both are baffles, slightly different design. Does anyone have insight into whether it is worth the extra $$$ to get the Best? (about 50% more for Best.)

I am remodeling my kitchen and have also looked at Best by Broan and Broan elite range hoods. The two hoods I was comparing were very close in price and identical in features and quality. In your case, I am wondering if the more expensive hood is a different gauge stainless steel. The other factor to compare is the noise level of the blower motor. I believe this is measured in sones, but I'm not sure if that is correct. Hope this helps.

Thanks! The stainless steel gauge is what customer service mentioned as well. As I am doing the inline motor, it's actually the same for either. I would love to rethink a decision and actually choose the cheaper option, just once!

Hi lydiacaitlin No decision yet...was considering Kobe but on doing more research, realized I would dislike cleaning the fan blades and grease trap of the quieter squirrel cage design I was considering....I have been looking at ModernAire and Rangecraft too (waiting on price info with fingers crossed) Seems crazy spending more on a range hood than I did on my 36" pro-style range (got at a going out of business sale for $2500) However, noise and ability to remove effluent is very important to me with an open floor plan. I was hoping the new IQ blower Best might be a good mid priced option, however I would like to to hear from someone who actually has one...

I've only ever dealt with powered MUA in commercial applications. In residential, just dampers that are interlocked with the hood. Yes powered ventilation is obviously more effective than passive ventilation, but a simple damper has done the job in any residential application I've ever seen, integrated with the HVAC system if needed. The separate switch would only make sense if you were doing a separate blower which I think is overkill for most residential. As I said before, simple is the key! Simple design, simple to operate, simple to service. Most people just want to be able to turn the fan to a certain speed and get cooking. They don't want to futz around with a bunch of variable speed controls balancing exhaust flow with intake. And I'm never a fan of putting complicated crap like that into a house that only makes sense to the owner. You're going to flummox guests and future owners for no real advantage. Of course, if you are going to connect to the HVAC system, you should have a HVAC person who can deal with that, including automatic blower activation if needed and making sure you're not bringing too much outside air into your return duct. This goes especially if you have gas heat. You do not want to kill your heat exchanger prematurely. Makeup air has been a real problem in the residential appliance biz. Clueless salesmen/kitchen designers spec'ing these gigantic ranges and gigantic accompanying hoods (often that are too powerful for even the gigantic ranges), and they have no idea there could possibly be a consequence. Kudos to Broan for coming up with a prepackaged solution that does not require an engineering degree to understand and use, or any expert for that matter (although as I said above, an HVAC tech's help may be needed for some installs). I guess you could rig up a dedicated blower and resistance heater for the kitchen, but most people I know would rather ditch the prostyle range than cough up the cash to install and operate that. Nobody is "interested" in MUA. It is not a creature comfort. Either you need it or you don't. If you don't, there's no point spending the $$$ for it. One big difference I have found in the price of hoods is the type of stainless they are made from. A Best hood is 403 stainless and the Vent a hood is 304 I believe. Best makes a "marine grade" stainless hood in the "WP" series out of 316 which is the best and it costs twice as much as the "KA" series. If you live in a coastal area with salt air you WILL get rust spots on a 403 stainless hood. You can polish out the spots and coat the metal to help this out but the finish will not look nearly as good as a 316 hood.

I am by no means an expert with ventilation - this was one of our biggest challenges with the reno. But, we have the Broan Elite hood (RMPE7004) and an inline blower (HLB6) - this is 600CFM.
Originally we had planned to have the Best by Broan insert (PIK33)800CFM. We have a wood chimney hood and could not get the PIK33 to fit so we ended up with the Broan elite. The 600CFM does not have baffles.
At one time I went thru the calculation of the BTU cooktop and oven and it calculated to the 800CFM. But we have been cooking in the kitchen for 3 months and I have not needed it on high yet. I don't think that it is terribly loud, and I am happy that I have now have ventialtion that keeps the smoke detector from sounding when I have the oven on high heat!
The Best hood quote was approx 25% higher than the Broan hood.

I ended up with the broan rmip 42. I've never had ventilation in a kitchen before, so probably would have been impressed with anything, but I'm quite happy with it. I know it works based on the amount of grease that it catches. When I make dinner my yard smells like the onions or salmon...no more lingering odors, which I really thought didn't bother me before. (I have an inline 1,100 CFU blower..probably overkill but I had to get a narrower hood than I really needed, so was making up for it a little.) Easy to clean, and the lights are great. I hope you're as happy with yours!
