Struggling picking my countertops - please help!

I am struggling with what material to use on my kitchen countertops (and backsplash). I have dark cabinets and dark floors and the cabinets are pretty modern. The counters are a darkish granite and the backsplash is slate. I want to replace it with white or white with a little grey in it. (I need to add a lot of light to the kitchen.)

I love carrera marble but don't want the upkeep (sealing etc.) and I worry about staining. I love thassos and am considering glassos but I'm worried about the air bubbles looking dirty on the edges. I would be happy with quartz except it's not bright white (looks dingy to me) and the quartz that looks like Carrera marble doesn't look right to me. I saw a kitchen on tv with Carrera marble with a clear glass overlay so it didn't stay - what do you think of that?

Am I missing any materials that I haven't considered?

I will probably due white 3x12 or 6x12 glass tiles on the backsplash (straight down, not subway style) but am flexible on that.

What about something like the "shaded white" counters from Caesarstone, like Ocean Foam or Quartz Reflections, link below?

I think if you are worried by staining quartz is probably the way to go, I know the white granites also are prone to staining and while sealing does protect them it is not fool proof and you do have to reseal. Someone on the forum has marble and put glass on top when she had company - I searched for the thread and could not find it though. Maybe someone else can remember who that is?

You all are making good points about the laminate, because she has no plans to update the kitchen and the layout is terrible. Idrive, the cabinets are old, not vintage. They were replaced in the early or mid 80s after a small kitchen fire and have been painted a couple of times since then. Palimpsest, I like the 50s diner grooviness of the metal edge, but it's a gunk magnet (just like the rotting rim of the drop-in sink). Off to check out the laminate manufacturer names you gave me - thanks much!

Thanks, guys...I will call around and find another Marmoleum installer and see whether that is an option still open to me. If I do go with Marmoleum, I think it should be sheet and pretty plain. Any recommendations on light or dark? Maybe I should photoshop it and see what it would look like both ways. I'm going to have to come up with a wood/tile (wood in kitchen, tile in the hall) option for DH. He's set on wood, even though I'm not convinced. I've worked myself into a corner here!! EAM44, I just can't do tile in the kitchen, although that one is tempting! I had tile in my last kitchen and after 30 minutes of hanging out, my back would start to ache. In an hour (not unusual for big involved meals) and I would be in pretty significant pain. And I don't have back problems!

Sounds like the Ph of the soil is wrong, camelias are acid loving plants and like the soil around 5.0 to 5.5. I think you may be fertilizing too much. The Main time to do it is in the Spring and you can repeat in January, sometimes it is a good idea to use a soluble fertlizer from Winter to early Spring maybe once a month, try using a Camellia and Azalea fertlizer as the main one. The brown could be burn from the excessive amount of fertlizers you are using. Also try picking off the Caterpillers by hand, and the plants may need a bit more water have you got under the mulch and checked that the soil is damp as sometimes it may only seen that way, dig down and have a feel, it could be the roots, those two plants could have been potbound when you bought them, Hope this helps...MM.

I agree - love the floor but I think I would go with something simpler. I would look at different countertops, too. I know people (like someone above) always say that keeping things a darker single color makes a small space look bigger, but that's never my experience! I always think an all white space looks the biggest! So I'd do the white shaker cabs with maybe a white countertop and backsplash. We've purchased the pure white quartz from ikea, as well as the pure white acrylic (corian) and both look great and modern. If you think this house might appeal to some artsy hipster types, I also like the Marsta door which channels a midcentury vibe. It is on supersale right now. The space is small so I'd bring in interest with hardware and a lighting fixture.

Beekeeperswife has quartzite, super white. She covered her island before a party.

I have White diamond granite. Sealed by fabricators before install. No issues with staining. Oil and all kinds of stuff gets left on it and it just wipes away.
