What Can We Do To Preserve The Sealer on Our Granite Counters?

Once we are done with our kitchens, I'm sure we'd all like to wait as long as possible to re-do sealer,etc. I know that some cleaning prducts can take it off; I'm just using water or Windex with Vinegar (which has been tested on sealed granite.)

Anything else we should be doing? For example, is it important to wipe a counter dry vs. letting water on it just air dry? Or does that make no difference? I often let muine air dry after wiping and it just occured to me that may be I shouldn't....

Glad:

There's many different types of sealers that are out there
on the market - the best advice I can give you is to - first -

find out EXACTLY which brand and type your stone has been
sealed with, then look up the reccomended maintainence methods
that YOUR sealer company suggests... If YOU applied the sealer,
check the label on the container it came in - many companies
have websites that can give you what you are looking for...

IF your Fabricator applied the sealer - get with him and get
the name and the type that was used - maybe he'll have
a partial container that he can give you with the info on it....
maybe / maybe not, but it's worth a try....

It's been MY experience over the last 30 years, that many
silicone based sealers (which are pretty much
the majority of sealers these days - that I run into anyways)
can be affected by acetone, alchohol
or MEK solution exposure (all snotty solvents) -

Again, I am NOT a Chemist dude..
I am a Fabricator, and I like happy customers, so I prefer
products that do not let me down, and perform well for
MY customers - after all:

"Call backs - AIN'T always GREEN BACKS"

Anyways.........

As for cleaning, many salers work well with a simple solution of
warm water and a drop of dish soap if needed... But AGAIN -
consult the company info that was provided by the sealer
that YOU have on YOUR counters to play it safe.

Thank you. Kevin. Mine was sealed with Stonetech heavy duty. I'm generally just cleaning with water and was wondering of letting the water sit on it is a bad or neutral thing. But I guess we need a chemist!

Catmom, your mix sounds nice. You're another alcohol user (lol)! The lavender oil sounds like a nice touch...I love lavender! Thanks for naming a sealer brand too. Rockmanor, ooh, those Method products look so interesting! I always want to try them when I see them arranged so nicely on the shelves at Target. They look so pretty and smell so good. Nice to know you are pleased with their granite cleaner...will have to try it now! Nancy, thanks so much. That's good to know. I really want to try that polish, and since you've had a good experience, I feel more confident moving forward with it. I may try the cleaner too! I SO agree with you about the glass cooktop! I posted here when I got it in November, and on the Cooking forum as well! There was definitely a learning curve for both cleaning and cooking. I learned about Weiman's and BKF here when I posted. Got great advice that I have certainly put to use. Dlm2000, got me using microfiber cloths, and actually gave me the little kick I needed to get a pan out and start cooking on the thing. She told me not to pamper it, or be afraid of it, but to use it!! People really make a difference in other people's lives here...thanks, Dlm! Golddust, it will be our little secret...I won't say a thing around your granite about the years of abuse you've subjected it to! LOL! I'm just so paranoid about such things...especially since the stuff is so new! I believe with all my heart that your counters are gorgeous and in great shape. That's the way things roll for you Golddust! Maybe that's the takeway here...whatever you use, or do, you gotta have faith!

According to the article it states that yes all granites need a sealer no matter what color or degree of how hard it is. At least that was my take away from reading it. At the place I bought my granite they were offering the 15 year sealer as a buyer incentive so I didn't have to pay for it. They were offering a free sink, sealer and upgrade edge during a sales promotion. I bought my own sink though somewhere else as the choices weren't that great. Maybe you could ask for it and see if you can get the sealer thrown in?? Worth a try : )

Try General Finishes High Performance Topcoat. I'm experimenting with it on red oak. It very much preserves the natural color of the wood. So much so that I'm wondering how to enhance the grain just a wee bit before I topcoat w/ it. No yellowing (on red oak) whatsoever. General Finishes contact phone # 800-783-8050. They're located in Wisconsin so Central Time Zone. I've called them before & will give them another call for suggestions on slightly enhancing the grain of red oak. It's available in satin, semi-gloss and gloss. McFeeley's has the best price that I've found. McFeeley's Oh, the stuff is super easy to apply. (I'm using a foam brush but it's sposed to spray nicely, too.) The only complaints that I've read about it is that it maybe dries too fast. Ossiemom - I feel your pain and know exactly how frustrated you must be. We've been living in our basement (thank goodness for that since it would be an even bigger issue if we were in a hotel!) for 2 weeks now while the floor company tries to get our hardwood floors to look decent. And I say decent since I'll accept even that at this point! So what should have been a 4-5 day job is now going into week 3 and we still may have to start over - it's infuriating! Anyway, I'm sure they must have done this, but just thought I'd ask to make sure - did they seal all the granite when they put it in? The reason I ask is that we used 2 slabs of Cambrian black that weren't from the same lot and they looked completely different before sealing. One was much lighter than the other, however after sealing they look exactly the same to me. We knew this though PRIOR to buying them, so it wasn't a surprise. For some reason one slab already had sealer on it and the other didn't when they were brought to the stone supplier. We had them put sealer on a test piece from the lighter one just to see how it looked and we couldn't tell the difference. I would think that they would have sealed your granite if it requires sealing though, so then it definitely isn't acceptable if they look different!
