With a garbage disposal, fireclay or cast iron apron sink?
Comments (4)Hi About, I have the Herbeau fireclay apron front sink. Most apron front sinks are fireclay. Kohler makes an enameled cast iron apron front, and there's one at Ikea, too. Fireclay sinks are beautiful, but they're much more fragile than cast iron, which is practically bulletproof. As far as the garbage disposal, you'll need to make sure you get the right flange (sometimes a fireclay sink requires an extra-deep flange). This is because the fireclay sinks can be thicker than other sinks. Importantly, when the plumber tightens the flange, he needs to be careful not to tighten it too much, or the fireclay sink could crack. You might ask the plumber to do some extra sealing with some silicone, since the flange will not be super tight. Fireclay sinks are typically a little irregular, so installation can be a challenge. Breakage during install is also a risk. They're also prone to crazing from thermal shock (it can happen if you dump boiling water in the sink). Also, heavy pots and pans can make scuff marks that can be hard to remove, although I've found that a pumice stone works. All in all, I'd get cast iron if I had it to do over again. My fireclay sink has had no problems, but I don't like having to bw so careful all of the time....See MoreKohler Whitehaven has small dimple where you can see cast iron!!!
Comments (5)First I would call Kohler so there is a record of the issue and so you can get a feel for how receptive they are to taking care of the issue. If there is a dimple with iron showing through it will rust so I would definitely want it replaced. Will your builder be involved or did you purchase the sink on-line?...See MoreLooking for reviews on 33" Almeria Cast Iron Farmhouse Sink
Comments (12)We went with the Kohler Whitehaven, which I ordered from a seller on Houzz. When the contractors opened the box to install the sink (about three months after we had received it), they discovered that it was cracked in a couple places. Kohler replaced the sink and in fact sent the replacement by rush mail in order to not delay the rest of the kitchen project. We love the sink and the experience with Kohler was by far my best customer service experience ever, which I believe is one of the reasons people love Kohler products. I highly recommend this sink and I also highly recommend opening products as soon as you receive them to check for damage!...See MoreSteel Range hood with cast iron apron sink
Comments (5)I agree with the other posters--it will be fine. You didn't ask for other advice, but have you considered adding more drawer bases? Drawers are more convenient that door bases, and more convenient than ROTS behind doors, because you are using one motion to open the drawer. Are you locked into the layout? Can the stub wall be removed? GW archive discussions--All drawer bases...See Morenewenglandsara2
