Shaw sink/Countertop Quandary. Please help asap!

My husband installed a single basin Shaws apron sink, and yesterday we had the countertops installed (quartz...not sure if that will matter). After the installation I noticed that the amount of edging showing around the sink is different on both sides. On the left-hand side, there is 1/4 of an inch exposed, and on the right-hand side it starts off at 1/4 of an inch exposed, and then expands to 3/4 being exposed (so in other words, it goes from small to large, and looks uneven compared to the opposite side). I talked to the installer and he said that because the sink is crooked, that's the appearance that it will have. I know Shaw sinks can have some imperfections, but I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem, and if you were able to get it fixed so the countertop edging was even all the way around the sink. Answers or advice ASAP would be greatly appreciated! The installer is coming back today between 4 and 6, and I need to be prepared! : ) Much thanks for any (and all) advice!

The installer is right. A lot of fireclay sinks are not %100 even on both sides. Was the counter pre-cut?

Yes, it was. The thing is, when you're comparing the two edges and overhang, the one on the left is practically covered, and the one on the right is barely covered. I just don't understand why they could cut the stone so that it would be even on both sides. It just doesn't look right. I'd attach a picture, but I don't know how....

I am having a lot of anxiety over this area and am really hoping for some guidance from all the experienced and gifted posters out there - please! We decided on absolute black honed for the counter - now need to decide the thickness. This dining room butler's pantry in the expanded dining room was suppose to appear like 2 independent furniture pieces. KD's goal was nothing like a kitchenette (or the adjacent kitchen) so he did not want 10 feet of a counter - hence the brown "china cabinet" piece steps back from the black "buffet counter" BUT he also planned for the counter heights to be different. The china cabinet has a thick (almost 4") of a wood slab between base and uppers. And he planned for 2 cm for the buffet. I know it is hard from these pictures (I'll try to get by there to get better ones today) but if we use 2 cm granite as recommended by the KD there will be only like 3/4 of an inch difference. If we use 3cm it could be shimmed up slightly to line up with the base of the routed edge on the dining room piece and seem in line. I don't want the 2cm to look like a mistake - a just miss BUT if the design with the step back already commits us to "mismatch" pieces I don't want to do it half way. HELP. I am at the end of a long line of too many decisions and just want this done and moving forward. Any help, suggestions, questions etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.

Latest Update: Jay came back and worked on the fix. Although he was not finished with it today, I must say the gouges look a whole lot better and the scratches are now barely visible. Meanwhile, he called me tonight to tell me that he has arranged for an old-school porcelain repair expert to come over and take care of my sink and to make me whole. Lascatx, as usual, I'm finding good reason to follow your advice. Jeannie_Kitchen, you are right: We all make mistakes. And, Raynag, I can clearly tell that Jay is as pained about all this as much as I am. Honestly, I feel for the guy. While it's bad enough being in my shoes, I would not want to be in his! His clear determination to rectify this mistake, gives me confidence that all will work out. Thanks so much your sisterhood hugs, Charlikin, and your kind words of encouragement, Vicnsb! To Jerseydeb,Momof3kids_Pa and, again to Jeannie_Kitchen and Raynag: I appreciate your reminders that its truly possible to peaceably coexist with the fact of blemishes in my brand new kitchen! Of course, when all is said and done, I want to be able to show off my kitchen. Yet, at the same time, it's important to keep in mind that a true showroom kitchen is unlikely to also be a true working kitchen . In the end, there are likely to be many many more accidents, dings, gouges and scratches, etc. to demonstrate that my kitchen is a working kitchen after all. Perhaps, when this chapter closes and I can sincerely laugh about it, I will regard my Rohl farmhouse sink as the first item in the new kitchen to have "patina." :) More to come.

ksc36/Joseph Corbett, LLC: I read the instructions and if you read it carefully, the wood block method is an alternative to use only if the clips are too long for the application ; in other words, if the clips would extend past, and sit on the cabinet side walls and keep the counter top from sitting on the cabinets. I don't think this would normally be an issue when installing a 30" sink into a 36" cabinet - both typical, standard sizes. I don't read it as an alternative technique to be used at the discretion of the installer in place of the specified technique using the Blanco instructions and hardware. In my opinion (which I have developed during my ordeal), installers will almost always use wood and screws instead of anchors and hardware because it is simply faster and easier with less chance of making a mistake - plus there's no immediate downside. The customer, unless he is watching closely and knows what he is looking at, will never know what the installer did .................until possibly months or years later. On the other hand, using the anchors requires that the counter top be turned over (bottom up) which would probably require a third installer. The installers that did my counter tops consisted of 1 installer and 1 helper - they were in my house about 2 hours. They said that they had 4 counter top installations to do and they had to be done that day. I don't know how these guys are paid but I suspect that they are paid by the job and the number of jobs they sign up for or are assigned - speed is definitely a factor in their pay. Incidentally, the men that did my installation were also upset at the mistakes in the manufacturing of my counter top requiring them to make field adjustments which ultimately resulted in my counter top not being flat and the "lippage". I tried to get their names so that I could subpoena them to small claims court but M.R.Stone, LLC would not provide their contact information.

Dee, quartz is not heat proof, but the fact is that if you've got to get something off the range or out of the oven right away, you can put it down on a quartz countertop without harming the top, as long as you pick it right back up and put a trivet under it. Same with granite. Longer exposure to heat begins to crystallize the resins in the top. For some reason, people always want to know if you can put a hot pot on it, or if you can cut on it. (You can, but it will dull your knives, so why would you want to?)

I don't know if this is any help, but we just had our Shaw sink and countertops installed in our kitchen. The countertop contractor required that the sink be in place when they came out to template the tops. He wanted to make sure it was in because he said that the big sinks can vary a lot so he made a template on the sink and cut it out prior to bringing the granite out.

That part of our countertop install wasn't too bad. Now, other parts were a pain.

The sink may not be even but the templating should be done on your specific sink so that the reveal looks even on your sink. Having said that, the Shaw's sinks can still present a problem because sometimes they are not exactly even up and down as well as side to side. Our first sink had that problem and when you looked you could see more space under the marble on one side than the other. The second sink (the installer cracked the first one) doesn't have the problem of the first sink but it is slightly different from side to side than the first sink so the reveal is not perfectly even. But it is not nearly as way off as the description you gave of your sink.

Thank you all for your input. The installer came back out and showed me were the imperfection is with the sink. The side were it looks crooked, or uneven, is almost concave in the center of the side of the sink, so it's almost impossible to cut a piece so that it looks straight. He said that if he cut it to size, then the center of that piece would be a lot smaller in width than the rest of it, and it will be even more obvious of a flaw if it is changed. He did give me the option to re-install a new piece, but now I think it will look even more obvious if it's changed. It never even crossed my mind that this would even be a problem. All of the kinks in the road that have popped up are driving me slightly bonkers. :) So, now it seems as if I have to live with a crooked looking piece of countertop, or a crooked looking piece of countertop. In other words, it's a win-win situation.
