backsplash in process ... looking good?

Finally ... we're in the process of installing the backsplash. Here are a few pictures. We're almost done!

Absolutely!

I love the color combinations, and the spacer clips look like they are doing their job well.

How did all that get up on the wall and the countertop stayed so brand-spanking-new?

Oh wow....how beautiful is that!?!

Just that little bit of 'jewelry sparkle' adds just enough to give the BS understated elegance.
Love it!

Where do you all get your spectacular BS ideas?
I'm afraid when it comes time, I am just going to copy one or more of your BS patterns/ideas and hope you all consider it a compliment. :)

I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

If your choice were only between to 2 you originally posted, I'd choose the one on the right--the cream one. From the photos it looks like it works very well with your quartzite. The gray one is "off" just enough not to look pleasing. However, as many have noted, either one is more difficult to clean than a smooth surface. What sort of cook are you--very neat or more devil-may-care? If you are very neat and do not splash much when you cook, then you may get away with the split-faced marble, but if you are a more exuberant cook, you may find it a challenge to clean. The mother of pearl is very formal and quite busy, so it's going to compete with the counter tops as well. Personally, I would use a smooth crackle tile in a tan/beige tone to work with your quartzite. Simple is always good.

The purposes of make-up air are mainly these: (a) No air leaves the kitchen via the cooktop hood that isn't replaced; and (b) If air isn't replaced with low pressure loss, the household pressure drops to the point where the hood blower can just keep up with the leakage that exists at that pressure. In this case one risks back-drafting any household combustion appliances that might take air from the household common air space. This is a safety hazard and is the reason why most code enforcement authorities will require MUA if the hood blower is rated for more than 400 CFM. Unfortunately, even if the rating is 400 CFM or lower, one is of depending on household leakage, which is an undesirable method of supplying MUA. Also, for many of the cooktops of interest in this forum, a rated 400 CFM hood system provides too little air flow for complete cooking plume capture and containment. To the OP's question, without a wall behind the cooktop, there is an additional side of the cooking space where hood overlap must extend past the cooktop, just as for island and peninsula applications. One might want to review the Wolf Design Guide for examples of island hoods vs. wall hoods. The back and side overlap may force the cooktop farther from the wall line, or make the "view" space wide enough to accommodate the hood width. (If this view space is a cut-out like shape, then possibly a wide and deep enough wall hood could be mounted on it above the "view," but the hood depth will need to be in the 27-inch regime, and the cooktop appropriately placed so that the center of the cooking zones can be centered in the front-to-back dimension of the hood entry aperture.) I have no personal objection to this design, but the increased costs of a larger hood, larger ducting, a larger blower, and a larger sized MUA system need to be considered. The OP may wish to tour the large number of hood and MUA threads on this forum for improved perspective. Most locations will need, if not require, heated MUA.

thank you! eastbay mom - our "friend contractor" is a neat freak.

amity - believe me the BS is the toughest decision, but I wanted simplicy with a little color. I got alot of my ideas from this site and thanks to everyone! I loved the glass tile, but knew I didn't want it all over. I decided to add all glass to the back of the stove, its not much but it will give it a sparkle.... and YES I would consider it a compliment if anyone used my idea, though there are alot of great kitchen out there.

I really like the main pattern with the stripe of the shiny glass tiles. Are you using honed marble subway or is it a marble like ceramic? It's really nice either way.

brickton - its a porcleain tile to look like carrera marble... less expensive! It has a matte finish.

Our friend (along with the assistance of my DH he did cut some tile) is doing the backsplash, actually he's transformed this entire kitchen to what it is today. He's amazing and its his trade. We're lucky!

As I mentioned this website has been very helpful. I was concerned the color of glass choice was going to be too matchy, however I think it works for us.

November - its exactly what I was doing throughtout my entire process. There were some kitchen designs on this web that made me change my mind last minute. There are alot of great eyes out there, I'm glad mine worked for us.

I should have all the details off by the end of the week. At least I hope so we're having our first party just intime for the reveal next weekend!

To those of you have followed my progress throughtout this kitchen renovation, thank you for your support and opinions.

Yes this is true... we planned this party out a long time ago, so its finally coming together and should be done. Glass tile should be delivered tomorrow and grout will go up as well. The FINAL reveal should be coming soon... just need that corner cabinet for the sunroom.

Beautiful! I love how you used the glass as an accent. I am planning something similar but haven't gotten to picking out all the tile yet. Just the accent tile.
When you mentioned doing all glass behind the stove I thought that might be a little much for me as I tend to like very simple and understated. But when I saw the pic, all I can say is WOW! Just love it! Saving this post to my clippings!

kmsparty - THANK YOU! Trust me it took me the entire demo/renovation to figure out what tile I wanted. I order samples and samples of glass tile, honestly must have spent $$$ on samples, until I found this one at a local store along with the carrera subway. Until when I was ready to order they were out of stock of the glass, so I ordered one last sample from glasstileoasis.com and found this tile. I have to say I probably went with my second or third choice of tile. I have enough samples to cover my sink area in our basement, which is another project.

jsweenc - I know I know .... its always something. I was waiting on the remiander of the glass tile we needed. I got that in the mail and of course another delay. Our friend was not available as we had expected this week, he swears he's coming Sunday. I promise will post as soon as its completed. Thank you for your interest.
