Old backsplash is off the wall, how to fix the wall for new one?

Here is a picture of how busted up our kitchen wall where the old backsplash was:

Very uneven and just gross with all the dust and debris. we will be putting subway tiles for our backsplash. Any suggestion how to smooth this wall out? i am totally clueless =P

THanks for any advice.

I think you need to hire a drywall person to come over and put a new piece in for you first.

oh darn!!

i was hoping we can put maybe something like sheet rock over it?!? or patch it with something?

Sand the rough stuff so it's flush/flat with the rest (any small voids that remain are ok). Then prime as mentioned. If you happen to be using glass tiles, you can find a glass nipper (it has opposing cutting wheels) at a craft store. For some reason most tile supplies still don't carry that type of nipper. One final bit of advice: consider your starting point carefully to limit the edge cuts elsewhere, like around outlets, edges of cabinets, etc.

Thanks all. The stone with the metal hood picture is what my wife was considering. That or just a bit thinner in the "stacking". She basically wanted a 3D effect to break up all the smooth surfaces. The cabinets are flat panel with bead details, so there are a lot of those. We aren't playing up the green in the SS much. We already have some really bold colors in the room (Cherry Le Crueset pots, blue tablecloth, yellow walls, big Pates Baroni poster). And I agree that too much stone would seem too rustic. We were looking for a french / country / whimsical kind of feel. If you've ever been to Circo in New York or Las Vegas -- that kind of thing with a home-cook twist. It's going to be a tough style to pull off, but so far things seem good and coming together. I just don't want to ruin it in the end with the wrong backsplash. Thanks again. Anthony

I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post.

32 pretty much standard.. Mine is 32 and I'm short and it's just right. When we recently remodeled my husband's bathroom he asked for his vanity to be 36 inches. I don't mind using it on occasion, it's no problem, but there's no way I would be comfortable using it full time. If I had to bend over to wash my face in the sink in his bathroom the counter tops would be too tall to comfortably rest my arms and take the stress off my lower back by slightly bending forward. Your bathroom and get your comfort level should trump what your friends think is too short. I do believe taller vanities are going in now but that won't work for you. Do what works for you☺

We are going to remove our 4" backsplash as well. We were hoping that we could patch up the wall ourselves. However, it looks like, from your picture, a new drywall will be needed. How did you remove your backsplash? Was it difficult? I am nervous about removing ours.

Our fabricator did the removal before installing our countertop. we had tile backsplash they use a chisel and hammer to take out each tile, was a mess. He did tell us whoever did it originally did a good job (oh well) it is much harder to remove than usual.. Make sure you cover your furniture (if you have some in the area) and whatever you dont want dust on.

Crap, i was really hoping it is something we can do ourselves. We spent so much money on everything else have to keep the cost down.

It's not terribly difficult to put up new drywall (drywall = sheetrock, same thing). You'll have to get out what's left first, hard to tell what kind of job that will be. Then you tape the seams and put a little mud on them, and you're good to go for new tile.

Tile does need a smooth surface, though, and is pretty unforgiving, so I think you're pretty much stuck doing the new sheetrock yourself or having someone else do it -- I don't think you can patch that many holes and then put the weight of the tile on top of them without risking the patches falling out.

I am going through the same thing. I have to remove a whole backsplash that was just installed 2 months ago. Tried to take a few off and not going to be easy. Probably new sheet rock here too. Good luck with yours..

yikes, i guess our backsplash wont be up anytime soon.

The wall is so busted up there are holes here and there but not there it is just very uneven. So if we are to take out what is left, does it include those that are still pretty well attached, just to make it even before putting the sheetrock? i donno, sounds like we need a professional in here... =(
