i hope you're still around...i need the size of your range, and refridgerator or if you want me to play with standard sizes i will. knowing the size of that sink cab and the sink would be a huge help as well to give you a decent mockup.

Igloochick, I was HOPING you would be around!! I've seen the oh-so-helpful mockups you've created for others.

My range is a standard 30" and the refrigerator is 36", also standard, I believe. I have a toddler needing attention, but I'll pull out the blueprints and get a measurement for the sink cabinet as soon as I can.

I'm back! By my inprecise measurements, I believe the sink cabinet measures 48" in each direction. The measurement from the window corner to the start of the upper cabinets on each side is 60".

I don't think you asked for a review of your layout, but I have 1 point to share (since I had a similar layout before):
- is there anyway to move either the range or the fridge to the other wall?
Because a lot of prep work is done between the sink and the range and ?20 inches? is not enough space. Does that even fit a cutting board?
If you move the fridge, you can center the range.

Comments on the layout are welcome, although at this point, it may not be possible for me to act on suggestions that require anything but minor changes.

Huango, yes, that range, sink, refrigerator wall IS tight; I'm counting on the nearby island for prep space. My current kitchen is laid out like a galley... with 8' in between the sides. This layout will certainly be a big improvement over what I'm work in now!

My main comment is similar to Huango's....if it is at all possible, move the range to the other side of the sink.

The refrigerator looks like it has a nice little niche for it in its current location and you want to be sure you have enough space b/w it and the island to open doors or move it out if needed. That niche allows you to have a full-size refrigerator (which I miss now!)

It's not just the workspace, it's also:

• work flow generally goes from refrigerator to sink to range...which makes it ideal to have the sink b/w the two

• standing room...it's not terribly bad now, but I'd rather have plenty of room to cook & move around w/o worrying about running into someone at the sink b/c the range & sink are rather close.

I know you envision prepping at the island, but w/the sink on the wall, I think you'll find yourself prepping a lot b/w the range & sink. We had 24" b/w our sink & range in our old kitchen and it was tight! It's one of the biggest improvements that means the most to me in our new kitchen!

BTW...if you do move the range, you might also consider moving the DW to the other side, b/w the refrigerator & sink, so an open DW isn't b/w the range & sink (dumping hot water, etc.)

Oh, and be sure you have enough room b/w the corner & DW so you can open the DW and stand at the sink at the same time--regardless of the side the DW is on!

If you cannot change it, then I at least you have a great attitude...it's an improvement over the old!

i have to get the kiddo up from his nap....but honey...you are NOT ready to approve this kitchen!!! this is my old layout and it totally sucked. you can't open the dw from the sink...cant use the fridge and stove at the same time...really its awfiul to work in!!!

fortunately we didn't have the cooktop next to the fridge, but instead just the micro and oven. we gave up using the dw and oven aftera few weeks ;(

you could easily twee his just a bit...my kitchen is only a foot or so bigger on the range wall..but quite a bit smaller on the dw wall...unlike this plan, my current one has the sink inset by 3" on each side. its a fabulous option for a corner sink! and helps the space flow better.

do you have eating at the island? and....whats beyond the walls???

Did I really do this?! Did I really request the assistance and comments of people I knew to be kind enough to take the time to give it, the NIGHT BEFORE our already delayed final pre-construction meeting? WHAT would cause me to do such a thing?! (Smile)

I do value your suggestions and see a few ideas I can still act on. As to the rest, in my current kitchen, my refrigerator and range are 18" apart and 10 & 12' away from the sink, respectively. My primary prep space is 3' down from the sink and 8' across from the refrigerator & range. All of the walking I get in when cooking is my primary mode of exercise! That said, the inefficiency of my kitchen really doesn't bother me all that much. I guess I have to stand and say, "My name is Gala, and I am NOT one of the TKO."

The refrigerator has a wall on the dining room side and a finished panel on the other with a full-depth cabinet above. See, I did learn something from this forum, even if I didn't pay enough attention to the layout posts.

Igloochic, thank you for taking the time to mock-up my dimensions. The renderings and pictures of your kitchen make it clear to me that the dishwasher placement just won't work.

I currently have an 18" trash pull out between the range and sink. I think I can move that between the sink and dishwasher without my husband divorcing me or builder taking a hit out on me.

Igloochic, could you share the aisle dimensions of your pre-renovation kitchen? Also, can you explain what you mean by insetting the sink by 3"?

The range side of the island is all drawers. The far side of the island has standard counter height seating. There's a 5.5' aisle behind that which serves as a main thoroughfare through the house. Past the aisle is an open staircase going up to a family room.

you're making a good switch there with the cabinet by the dw :) here's just one little proposed change to think about...

if you put a little round prep sink on the end of the island kind of right between the stove and the sink you'll add so much function you won't believe it! your island has PLENTY of space for that to happen easily.

i'll ask dh to scan my drawings of the current sink set up tomorrow for you. it won't effect your meeting, since its just a cabinet change, but he flow would be so much better,,,you could even leave the dw where it is if you did the inset.

i'd consider doing a 27" base cab (or using a board behind standard cabs to push then out). this will make the stove and fridge look more built in, and i'd do a 15" upper. you don't have a lot of space, but you have plenty for that.

those isles in the old kitchen were 33". lol they sucked! you are in much better shape with the nice wide isle...i'd actually cut it down o 42" or so...but that isn't the end of the world. (I like to turn and work verses turn, step and work).

A prep sink... I hadn't really considered that. Since this kitchen is so much more compact than what I'm used to, I didn't think I would need one. However, if it's a small change for a big impact... hmmm... new ideas to ponder.

Thank you (and your DH) for helping me understand the inset. The way I'm thinking of it, it would involve adding a filler piece to make the corner a little less tight. Am I anywhere close?

I am going to reduce the aisle between the range and island to 42" but increase the aisle between the dishwasher and island to 48".
