You could have both--bump out a 22" hood to stick out as much as a 24". The capture will be where you want it.

That said, I've always been perfectly satisfied with standard 18-22ish inch hoods, both for gas and induction. I think there are few cooking situations (and fewer chefs) where it's as big a deal as one might think from reading the appliance forum. You might have to run it on high and make more noise when you stirfry if you get a normal depth hood instead of a 24", but big woop. Most of the time it's gonna not be in use or running at a quieter speed, so why go BIG if you don't want to? If you stirfry or do other super messy or stinky tasks daily, then go for function, but for most of us, regular hoods are plenty of function.

You can bump out hoods?? I had no idea!! That's sounds like a great compromise. Do I just ask the GC to put 2x4's behind the hood or is there more to it?

We have been getting by with a completely crappy hood for so long, so I think we would probably be fine with a 22"....I stir fry maybe once a month, fish and curries more often, but a regular hood will be a big step up for us already. I almost never deep fry.

The only comment I have to offer is that when you cook, where do you do most of your cooking, back or front burners? If back, like me, then I think the 21"/22" should be fine. If the front & it involves high heat/smoke/steam/grease/odors, then you might want to opt for the 24".

BTW...I like both of the ones you posted (form!). If you like the one mounted under the cabinet, can you do the same for the 24"? Other than the fact that one is mounted under a cabinet and the other not, they look the same to me......

I think it is pretty much put 2x4s behind it. There is extra finish work to do, though, and any cabinets above the hood will now need finished sides...I know a while back there was at least one appliance forum poster with some pictures of what he did. Maybe do a shoutout there and see if he pops up or anyone remembers.

I have a standard depth Broan hood and really love it. I bumped it out 3" because my cooktop was also bumped out 3". I had a metal fab shop make me a piece that would fill in the gap. It worked perfectly!

I agonized over the hood decision as well. I ended up with a 36" x 20" hood and have been very happy with it. Bumping out seems like a great compromise (depending, as Buehl mentioned, if you cook more on the front or the back burners).

I went from no hood to a hood so it was a huge improvement. One thing I do is I start the hood prior to cooking, and so far everything goes up and I haven't had any problems (I have a 36" cooktop and was worried that not going the extra length of the hood would be a problem).

My DH has complained that he can't tell what I'm cooking when he comes in the door and he misses the wonderful aromas when I cook.

I wish I had a deeper hood. I think mine is about 21"-22'. The appliance salesman LIED to me (about lots of ventilation stuff) and said deeper ones were not available, but since I had to special order the one I did get, I'm sure I could have got something more suitable. It's a chimney style, and I don't see how it could be bumped out. I can get by OK with what I have, but have to use the back burners for really smoky greasy cooking. For what I spent on my make-up air system, a deeper hood would have been a minor incremental cost.

I'm on the function side. A shallow hood will allow all the gunk to go up over your hood. Yuck. Your cooktop/stove should have hood requirements in the manual. I'd follow that especially if you stir fry. Besides an extra 2 inches really won't kill your form.

Thanks for the replies! I was tempted to go with 22" after the first few posts, but now these latest ones are making me think 24" is the way to go. We would do the 24" under a cabinet, so hopefully it won't look that different from the nice 22" photo I posted. We do use the front burners all the time, and that's where our highest BTU's will be.

Boy, do I have a gunky hood right now. It's disgusting.
