I don't have a pull-out. But that's because I just can't justify giving up precious cupboard space for such a thing. Also, like you, I see it as just another opportunity for mess and another thing to clean. Our trash can is tucked into the sink cupboard in a space that is just perfect (accidentally so) for it.

Our trash can is out and accessible at the side of the island. We're very satisfied with this arrangement.

I don't like trash cans in a cabinet & don't particularly like freestanding ones either so I did like you're suggesting: put it under the overhang. Mine is at the end of a counter run next to the wall & I used one of the tall, thin rubbermaid 33 gal. cans (mostly used in offices? - I forget what it's called); it fits in a 12-15" space & fits perfectly under the counter. I think I bought the current one at an office supply store.

A chef friend of mine has a trash can that rolls out from beneath the island counter to be placed wherever you need it; it's very functional. I'm getting a pullout, though, to keep my dog out of the trash.

We have ours sitting at the end of the island. It is convenient but I hate seeing that can all the time. I wanted a pull out but as Pbrisjar pointed out I didn't want to give up the cabinet space for one. Now I am rethinking that choice because the look of that garbage can sitting out in my new kitchen is irksome. So we are trying to solve a puzzle with too few pieces and find a place to hide it.

We put ours under the sink. I didn't want to lose "real" cabinet space for any kind of trash pullout, and under the sink has always worked for us.

Mine is currently under the end of my peninsula overhang. It's very convenient and I have the Simple Human semi-circle with a flat back so it's up flush against the island and pretty much out of sight and well-covered.

Part of me would like to have it completely out of sight in a pullout, but I think I'd end up giving up too much cabinet space and having a smaller trash receptacle that has to be emptied constantly; kind of grossed out by the idea of having trash in a cabinet too and could see it really being a mess if we "miss" with the coffee grounds or something.

My kitchen renovation is a way down the road yet so I'm not sure what I'll do until I get it all figured out, but if I could keep it in the open but inconspicuous like it currently is, I lean in that direction.

I had to read this thread to see if anyone that's had a trash pullout didn't like it.

I must say, I have a pull-out. In there are 2 trash cans. One is for trash, the other for recycling.
It is one of my most favorite things about our new kitchen.
LOVE it. We previously had one at the end of the peninsula with an overhang. Personally, I prefer the pull-out MUCH more.

We have the Simple Human stainless steel can at the end of the island. The island has a support beam at the end of it. The can is under the overhang of granite and tucked against the beam. It doesn't show much. I prefer the foot-peddle to having to use my hands.

I have always had the non pullout one and was fine with it. Now that we are revampting, I think I would prefer one that is hidden, but the only cabinet that I think would work is pretty narrow. The sink cabinet is wide enough, but the pipe etc come down pretty low and don't allow much space. I think I have to look into this some more.

I was actually thinking about having my husband make something to surround the can that looks like the cabinets, but on casters. It would blend in and be easily moved too.

Half the time now IÂm dragging it to the back of the peninsula to clean up after the kids so IÂm afraid to lose that option. Plus IÂd like that space to double as seating when we need to squeeze one more person in.

I'm putting in a pull-out trash bin because my husband wants it.

Personally, I really like having a can under the sink. It's out of the way but very accessible, and it's very easy to take out and plop down next to where I'm working. Plus it uses a space that would otherwise just be a jumble of random, never-used items (at least in my kitchen).

I'm waffling on this decision too. I love my step-on simple human can because if I've got something yucky in my hands, or I simply don't have an extra hand, I can just step and toss, I'm not having to open a door or pull out a cabinet. Also, if I'm working on somthing (like shucking corn or something), I don't have to leave the cabinet open and in other people's way.

On the other hand, I don't know how to put my step-on can in a location in my new kitchen that won't bug me and our recycling is a nightmare right now, so the idea of having them both together and out of sight is pretty compelling!

My girlfriend put a cabinet at the end of her sitting 'L' portion and she loves it. I, on the other hand, currently have a 15x15x8 Rubbermaid tucked into the open space next to my stove and will probably keep that arrangement in Fall's renovation.

I like mine because it is easy to pull out when I empty my dust pan - I have stone floors and am frequently sweeping up dirt etc. especially during gardening season.

Others have raised a good point about missing the bin and then having to clean inside a cabinet - what happens if you don't realized you missed and an odor starts? Would the odor imbed in the cabinet and be difficult to eliminate?

When planning my renovation this was the concept that gave me to very most trouble. I don't particularly like looking at my trash pail. I've been at friend's homes with the pull-outs. I found it inconvenient, especialy with a handful of wet potato skins, for example, to open the door and pull the bin out. And I considered the cleaning aspect of the pull-out.

I ended up doing what works best for me. I have my open pail next to my island and move it around if I find I need it in a different spot. Location depends if I'm prepping, cooking, grilling or baking.

I discarded the lid years ago. Got tired of cleaning it, pushing it out of the way (wet potato skins again) and dropping it inside the pail. We take the trash out daily so it never gets a chance to smell.

We also were tight on space and put the plain old waste basket under the sink. It works well for us. Since it is small, we empty it frequently into the large can in the garage. We immediately take out the recyles to the garage for that can. Fortunately, our garage is attached and next to kitchen. I think smaller waste baskets = less chance of bad smells. The under sink option also keeps dog out of it.

I glad we didn't give up storage space for the garbage.

We don't have a pullout either and won't be putting one in our new kitchen. I have a compactor and love it, so I'm putting a new one in the new kitchen, along with a 2nd (my old one) in the walk in pantry for recyclables.

Generally I throw trash that has the potential to create a lot of odor straight into the garage can.

I have to say the pullout waste is one of my most favorite things about our renovation. We had ours under the sink and someone was always in the way. We had it at the end of the island and I didn't much like looking at it. So my thinking was to give up the cabinet space for trash because I get into the garbage cabinet far more often than any other cabinet I have in my kitchen. When I am prepping I just leave it cracked open for easy access. Works for us.

We have ours under the sink, too. If my hands are really messy I have another one in the laundry room that is just a few steps away. Usually the door is left open if not in use.

That space in my new kitchen will go to trash either way so the only difference is whether itÂs concealed or not but it will still be fully under a counter. IÂve never had a pull-out and canÂt say I dreamed about one either so I guess the only reason I was incorporating it is because it seemed like the thing to do. That 15" might serve me better as an overhang.

IÂd be curious if anyone was disappointed in their pull-out or had to go back to a can on the floor for whatever reason and really missed the function of it though.

Just a note about "one more thing to clean." I have to clean our trash pull out a lot less than I did the outside of the can that used to sit out. As far as "giving up cabinet space"--I prioritized according to how much an item gets used. Since trash is used more than almost any other item in our kitchen, except maybe the sink, it deserved primo cabinet space. It was far more deserving than some of the expensive pieces we use a couple of times a year. The aesthetics of hiding the trash, to me, are as important as the aesthetics of highlighting a showpiece. Actually more important since there is an important functional element to trash beyond the aethetics. As far as pulling the trash out with gunky hands, I have cup pulls and usually one of my pinky fingers is clean and I can easily hook it under and pull open the trash---with good glides, the effort is minimal. Our 2 trashes in the pull out are the size of paper grocery bags--which is what we line them with (compost doesn't go in our garbage.) The trash pull out is definitely a pleasant surprise with how well it works and how it solves former problems with what to do with the trash. When I'm cooking, I usually throw trash/compost into a dirty bowl on the counter and then sort it out while I'm waiting for something on the range or mw. I know I would trip over the trash if I had it near me on wheels (which is what always happens with our step stool, even when I'm aware of it being right next to me.)

My situation is exactly like what pbrisjar said, and for the same reason. I'm satisfied. I do have recycling receptacles in my pantry, though.

My two favorite things about our new house are the walk-in pantry and trash pull. We don't have to open a door and then slide it out. Just pull on the door and it comes out.

It's just to the left of the kitchen sink and has two bins. They are the size that holds tall kitchen bags. The area is much cleaner than when I used to toss garbage in the can under the sink, and it makes it much easier to recycle.

I agree totally with Zelmar for the reasons stated in feeling the trash function is a high-priorty issue, a realization I came to late and had to redesign. For me, the esthetics of not seeing it were always high priority. I could be very happy with one in an open space under my work counter, but only if the layout put it out of all sightlines except the cook's, which our kitchen didn't allow.

Regarding pulling out a cabinet door with messy hands, maybe I just missed it, but I was surprised nobody pointed out that that's a problem that can be designed away. I purchased a toekick opener for under $10 for our pull-out. The choice was either that or a hip-bump door latch, whatever they're called (hip-bump to open, hip-nudge to relatch), for even less. Using messy hands was never on the list.

Sandsonik, I was just trying to find the actual one we purchased, but it's been some time now. It was from a woodworker's web site. You can see the sort of thing we got for considerably more (and maybe better quality?) by searching on Haefele foot pedal door opener.
