Help please- counter stool, barstool?

So I just brought home one stool at counter height to try out before plunging for all 4. I'm confused about counter vs. Bar height, and which I actually need. I bought counter because my island is at the same height as the perimeter...that is, 36" high. Somehow the seat seems too low, but I would think that bar height would be too high.

The stools are from the mill stores, but are a dead ringer for the PB Isabella stool.

What height stool do people use??

Counter height is 36" high and uses 24" (seat height) stools. Bar height is 42" and uses 30" stools. If you are short waisted, either stool would feel a bit short for you, but would seem a bit tall for someone who is long waisted. If You are extremely short waisted where the stools are very uncomfortable to you, then buying a taller stool and timming the legs down to a custom size can work. You'd just have to make sure your stool was differentiated in some way from the others.

We bought adjustable height stools. In theory you bought the correct height chair for your counter, bar stool height is for a 42" counter and live wire oak said.

Jenna: Ah, kicking the back of the bar, yet another problem. We have lots of kick marks that my DH and I are guilty of. Can't totally blame the young'uns Good idea about the foot rail. Val and Grandma: Our stools are a beautiful cherry which complicates things. Just about any color would be obvious...... The clear bumpers might be the best choice. I was thinking that running a removable strand of foam with a tape backing along the back edge of the dark counter (just for when all of the kids/grandkids total of 14 people!) are here. Take it off when they leave, would not be obvious from the kitchen side. They all live long distances from us and we only see them in our home twice a year. I don't want to be constantly reminding the kids not to do this and that or be careful of this and that. Some are more careful than others but kids are kids!

Knee pedals are great, lizzie2. We had one in an old singer cabinet from DH's grandma that DH brought into our marriage. We got rid of it when I got tired of fighting with the aging machine. The pedal part was nice, though. I have a friend whose granddaughter has spina bifida. She found an old knee pedal cabinet and the local sewing machine repairman retrofitted a machine into it for her. This lets her g-daughter sew! I don't see why a foot pedal couldn't be attached to a table leg or board to let you sew more easily. HTH. : )

Below is the link for Penney's stools. I've been getting their catalogs for years and have a few saved for when we need to buy them. They seem to have a really good selection, different heights / styles / finishes. When my parents needed some we ended up finding a Bistro set at BJ's Wholesale that was more reasonably priced then Penney's. If you do see something you like at Penney's, be sure to google JC Penney coupon code, you should be able to find a decent coupon. Also sign up for their email deals. We originally had swivel stools at our last house but unfortunately they began to disintegrate after less than a year which was a shame as we chose them because they had a bit of a bentwood, slightly Parisian look going on that complemented our art nouveau stuff :( I was wary of buying more swivel ones TBH and wanted upholstered stools with studded details but in the UK it seemed surprisingly difficult - or at least it did in 2014 - to find high quality, antique style stools so we opted for non-swivel pewter look, industrial (backless) ones from Wayfair. The consolation being they have a vaguely Arts & Crafts feel! Currently we're sans island (making do with a dresser base!) so are not using them, but overall we're happy with the lack of swivel!

Thanks for the verification! I am a short 5'2" so that could be the issue. Once I put a seat cushion on there, I think it will be better.

jalsys - I noticed that counter (and bar stools) come in varying heights - 23-28" for counter stools, norm = 24-26", so you are smart to do a "sample" run first. The stools you posted say counter = 26" high and bar = 29.5" high (websites aren't always correct on dimensions so I would double check their measurements too to be sure).

I'm guessing a person's height/size and the depth of the dip in the seat (it looks like yours has one) could cause a stool to feel short/uncomfortable. I would also check the height from the floor to the top of your countertop (norm = 36"). If you find this height (26") to be too short, possibly try live wire_oak's suggestion using the 29.5" bar stool, or keep looking until you find ones that are higher/comfortable for you.
