Need help with flush mount Kraus Apron Sink

I love the look of the sink, and the the reason I choose flush mount over under mount is for easy cleaning and less splash over the front of the sink (for under mount the front of the sink would be lower.) Big but, my builder just got back to me that the flush mount for the Kraus has to be 3/16 or 1/4 of an inch higher than the counter top. Since I need to sign off on this asap, and I'm so confused since all the pic I saw with flush mount doesn't show that. I don't know if it's just my builder doesn't know how to install it or maybe it is the way for Kraus and I just did know it?

Any input would be appreciated

The attached pic is from my builder and from the top I do see the bump but the other dimensions just confuses me.

My English is not so good. Hope you guys can understand me. Thanks

I have had two kitchens in the past six months where I have specified a farmers sink (the same Fire Clay sink). Yes, we did pay more for the sink to be flush mounted than we did for the one that is undermounted... There is way more work involved in the flush mount than there is in installing an undermount, and if you want it to be perfect, hand polishing is a must. Ideally they will cut it very close and then finish the last 16th by hand. I know you will not technically see the edge, but it needs to be polished and smooth in order to have the sink fit in it properly. That being said I think they should have been a little more upfront about the situation before they did the template, unless you did not provide the exact model of the sink when you got the quote. I do not usually break out the charged to my clients, I generally provide them with a quote for the complete job because I believe it is less deceptive than giving them a low sqft. price up front and then charging them for every cut edge and polish a la carte... As a customer, provided I had given her all of the information up front, I would ask her to explain why the price changed...

We've had our Franke 33" flush mounted stainless steel sink for just about a year now, no issues at all. Be aware, the extra exposed top of the sink is new places that can scratch compared to if it was covered by the countertop. I believe we were one of the first to do it this way, and our GC thought we were crazy. Still love it to this day and have no regrets.

Curious if anyone regrets this sort of sink mount option. We are looking at this, but I don't want to make the wrong choice. Does this have any additional maintenance, from leaks, or re-sealing? The only reason I'm considering this is because with a mitered edge, this is the only way to do it, unless the sink is pushed back inside of the edge, but that will cut into the space for the faucet. The sink is already 21.25" deep, so there isn't much room as is. Pulling it out 1.5" to be flush with the counter helps make space for the faucet and plumbing. -OCJeff

Perhaps I am not understanding the issue but under mount sinks can be installed with a negative reveal, positive reveal or zero reveal. The zero reveal is one which is flush with the counter. You need to have the fabricator and installer do the counter and installation in this way. My understanding is that it is a bit more difficult to do because it needs to be so precise but that the issue relates to the counter template and installation of the sink rather than the sink itself.

Your English is fine. I don't understand the drawings. I can't understand why it would have to be built up in a flush mount. I think if it has to be built up it would cause huge cleaning problems. I would opt to go with undermount.

We have ours with a flush counter install. The counter is a tiny bit above the sink, but really slight. Our cabinet installer just adjusted his cut of the base cabinet to allow for a flush install.

Apron sink bases come with platforms already installed. He would have to shim the sink under the platform to do a flush or upmount install. He either doesn't understand how to do that the correct way, or doesn't understand that shims can make the sink any height needed to align with the counter. He should be looking at the hard plastic non compressible shims to get the sink height correct. And they should be installed 2 at a time, thin edge to thick edge.

This diagram shows how wood shims are used to get a window height correctly, but the same principal applies to getting your sink height correct.

Ours is completely flush. Your cabs HAVE to be perfectly square for this to work.

You know, ours is really flush. I was just feeling the area and I actually don't think it could get any better. The silicone seal around the sink is invisible so it is nice and tight.

holly-kayÃ¯Â¼Â I totally agree! That was my concern too. If they can't figure how to avoid the different height, I may have to opt to the under mount which I know would cost at least a week for the seller agent to get the quote and have everything set on paper....

hollysprings, thank you! this make sense to me. I just talk to the construction manager and sounds like he's concern is that the sink may not be secured. My attachment was sent by the supplier, so he thought that's the way to install this sink. I will forward your comment and photo to him, hope he can figure out the way to do it.

bcafe, that's how I want the sink to be installed! Beautiful! love it! Do you mean you cut the cabinet shorter so the sink can be the same height??
