Stick on tiles for counter tops and possibly backsplash???

Would you ever try those stick on tiles over your laminate countertops and up your backsplash (which is now just the wall)? Currently I am painting my countertops with countertop pain and while it is coming out nice.. the color in which you have to pick from aren't that great. They are just solid colors.

What do you think about my other idea?

Stick on tiles might work fine for a backsplash, especially if it doesn't get a lot of gunk on it and need a lot of wet cleaning, but I wouldn't want them on a countertop because they could get really icky if moisture gets under them wehre they come together, and bits of food could get into the joins as well.

Have you thought of mixing a color paint you like better? Or stenciling a pattern?

Are you thinking about the stick-on tiles mainly because they are inexpensive? I don't know what they have in the smaller sizes, but at least in the larger sizes they even have ones with a rounded edge that are groutable, so you get even closer to the real tile look...

It may be that the person installing the counters is worried about a good tight fit against all the walls where counters will run. If your walls are not flat and straight, the installers can cover a pretty good sized gap with that thick strip of countertop material laid a few inches up the wall ( the older style installations). But with good modern templating, you should expect a good fit even if your walls are a little bit off, then the tile can come right down to the counter and still meet with a small caulk joint at the change of plane. Perhaps you can ask them if they're worried about uneven walls, or you can take a yardstick to them yourself to see how they look. If it were my kitchen I'd certainly want the newer style installation.

The tiled backsplash usually sits just off the countertop by an 1/8th inch or so and the gap is caulked. The caulk can be cut away and the countertop should be able to be removed without damaging the backsplash. That's in a perfect world. Some installers set the bottom course of tile right on the countertop. Less clearance. Depending on how the countertop is attached to the cabinets below, that can affect things. The shape of the counter. A straight run or and "L" shaped? Are the ends open or captured? How the countertop is constructed? A slab of stone? Or a tiled-in mud bed? Sometimes the countertop needs to be sectioned out in pieces. In general, the backsplash can usually be preserved, but getting the countertop out might be ugly, especially if it's piece by piece. So..."it depends".

BEAUTIFUL! You have to enjoy working in your garden, because it is really well tended and planned also. Love it. I see your high chain link fence is like my back fence....7 foot tall and 100 feet long. I've planted Confederate jasmine...or trachelospermum jasminoides....or something sounds like that? It is evergreen here, and makes a gorgeous privacy fence withing a few years. Maybe in 4 years but by 5 it is very effective....they use it in Italy everywhere, including to climb over arbors, up old stairways, and covering fences to create a living privacy fence. Let me recommend it to you for that purpose. If you like, I'll create a Flickr album about the use of this jasmine in Italian gardens (the ones I saw anyway) in Umbria. Etc. Here the cabana was covered in blooming jasmine, the short fence covered in the jasmine is kept trimmed as a short hedge, no hint of the chainlink frame holding it up inside.

Thanks for the input. I lean toward the Raven and Calacatta, too. (In fact we just told our contractor to put the order in for the countertop). I'm still not 100% sold on the marble tile, though, I originally wanted a carrera that would be more muted, but the tile shop we're using doesn't have anything that looks right with Raven. I just worry that the Calacatta is SO white. When I see kitchens like this: http://bungalowhomeinteriors.blogspot.com/2012/04/clients-home.html my eye is drawn to how cool the tile looks next to the cabinetry. Guess I'm also concerned that the calacatta has more movement in it, which could be distracting. is there a reason you don't want to use real tile. I tiled right over my old formica counters - it worked great!

I did it for a bar counter, back when the stick-on tiles weren't quite so nice, and it really was OK. With some of the textured and glazed finishes now, it might not be too bad, but it would need to have the edges trimmed so there are no edges I think, or it would look crappy and then get messed up and look even crappier.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I am now thinking I should just clean, prep, prime, paint and then finish coat them. The Rustoleum (spelling) went on in just one coat but it is limited it in colors and leaves water stains.It has a satin sheen to it.
I think the hubby is ready to choke me. lol
