I looked at real estate yesterday in the $3000-$100,000 market. You can essentially get a habitable house for about $7000 here, it appears, while two miles a way you can buy raw space for millions.

Some of the strangest properties had a dozen pictures and virtual tours.

I found this kitchen:

I had so much fun this weekend!!! Not only did I get to meet so many wonderful people, but you all sent me home with soooo many plants!! Susan I took your advice and just started putting everything in the dirt. DH couldn't believe I could show up with a couple of weeds and come home with so many great plants. I have a bed in the backyard that I have been having trouble figuring out exactly what I want to put in it.... it's now my "Charity Garden". Every time I'm outside I'll remember the coreopis that I got from Lynn and the balloon flower from Andriea, the sedum and aloe that Terrance gave me, the Iris, Catnip, Fennel, and Cannas that Lynn gave me.... and Terrence I found the perfect location for the Vinca!!! Susan, the Red Leaf Begonia is by the front door, ready to greet everyone that comes to visit!! I had almost as much fun planting everything that I brought home, as I did visiting with everyone!

Thought I'd chime in with one more thing, since I just read the "4 y/o Bosch bites the dust" thread... Maybe it's attributable to my fastidious dish rinse routine or sheer dumb luck, but I have managed to make my low end Whirlpool Gold d/w last 12+ years. Not even really sure how old it is -- it was here when I bought this place 10 years ago and I vaguely remember hearing that the previous owners replaced all appliances two years before I bought it. I have not, not once, not a single time EVER, had to have it serviced. It sounds pretty much like a freight train during an atomic bomb detonation but it runs every time, all the time. That is the kind of reliability I need in my life. I'm wondering if I can realistically expect that with a Miele or Bosch or any other manufacturer (including Whirlpool) for that matter. ::Thinking twice about even posting this, due to the jinxing risk::

Rainidame, as you probably realized, you can use that system on both lower and upper cabinets. You can also use it on bookshelves as well. OK, now that you have things figgered out, lemme throw another idea at you. Have you ever considered making lower cabinets that are 32" deep rather than the standard 24"? What you do is build the lower carcasses 24" deep, but mount them 8" away from the wall. Then you make your drawers and pullout drawers 30" or 31" deep. You can still use 24" drawer slides, but mounted at the front of the pullout. Your countertops would be a standard 26" deep. The space between the back on the counter and the wall could be shelves, cubby holes, swingout units Â all 8" deep. You could even store staples or appliances like a toaster, mixer, blender, etc. I realize you are somewhat short of stature, but, if you can reach the backsplash, you can reach items stored in this extended area. As and added benefit, your upper cabinets could extend depth of your upper cabinets by as much as 8". Of course, you have to have a kitchen big enough to accommodate the additional depth.

It's obviously a small house with galley kitchen that annexed the back porch and took down the wall between the two but didn't do a flush beam in the ceiling. I think it's architectural sins are a pretty good warning to any that start out with the idea that knocking down walls or creating an island will automatically "cure" what ails their kitchen.

The materials and color choices, well, they were popular and the height of fashion in a certain era. Just another warning to all those enamored with the now popular all white kitchen look. In 40-50 years, they may also look back in horror at their now popular choices!

I think those finishes may have been popular, but they were never in particularly Good taste. I think the all white is both popular (here anyway, not IRL where I live) but is also in good taste for the most part.

I think this is actually in a lean-to addition on the house, but I *have seen various rooms with peaked ceilings added as a decorative detail no matter how it actually relates to the house, on my Real Estate adventures. Usually it is a living room or a hallway where there is clearly a floor above.

Imagine walking into an old 3 story row house, with a shallow "vaulted" ceiling, complete with exposed beams, on the first floor front. There are also a lot of mirror crazy houses too, walls of mirror with beveled ornamental overlays or beveled mirror "studs" at the intersections between pieces are very popular.

I think that gigantic structure is the ornamental "range hood".

It's hard to imagine someone did this on purpose, and supposedly liked it at the time! Definitely looks like a handyman special...and I mean it was initially done by a handyman. Oh, those verticals are just horrid.

I was looking at very low priced properties when I found this. This may also be a foreclosure. The ovens and microwave are gone (gray and white recess) and the fridge is gone brown recess.

One other thing I saw was a fair amount of large format tile countertops with either no edge, or metal stair nosing screwed on.
