and you're looking for input on wall color, laminate countertops and backsplash. Got it. You could go anywhere with these choices. What colors do you see from adjacent rooms? How much natural light is there in the kitchen?

A simple, relatively inexpensive idea on the backsplash: use the countertop material to form a 4" (?) backsplash along the wall and paint above that. While lacking the "bling" of applied backsplashes, it's way more economical and looks very finished. If you're wanting a "bling" moment, try using a paint color that isn't just a neutral. You can buy a whole gallon of paint for the cost of 1 square foot of tile. For more color and pizazz, choose window/seating fabrics that draw the eye.

Yes, those right for the cabinets and floor. We are re-doing the entire house with paint, so I haven't decided on what color will be out in the dining/family room that is next to the kitchen.

I was hoping to have a backsplash instead of using the countertop material. I would only need it on 2 of the walls.

Do you think a pale yellow would look good or should we look at something with more color?

I'm not too fond of pale yellow. What about a pale gold instead?

Not to be boring, but I think a creamy color on the walls would really look nice with your cabinets - they are a beautiful stain and I would hate to have the paint color competing with them!

If cost is an issue, you could do what we did and paint it for now and, when you've saved enough money after all the current work is done & paid for, put in a backsplash (BS).

I should warn you though...we've been 99% finished since the January 2009 (still no BS or glass in doors). Every time we've finally saved enough for our backsplash materials + labor, something more urgent comes up to "steal" the money. Sometimes I wish we had just bit the bullet and done our BS back in 2009...but cost was definitely a factor for us at the time!

If you do go the route of painting for now, be sure your counter installers, regardless of material, know that so they scribe the back counter to follow the contour of your walls and don't leave a gap b/w the counter and wall.

Also, if you're planning to put in a tile or stone BS now or later, don't put in one of those 4" mini-backsplashes...IMHO, they don't look as nice when you finally put in the tile or stone.

LOVE your choice of Cabinets!! Our Kitchenmaid Mapleton chestnut cabinets will be delivered tomorrow! Your flooring you picked out will look great too!! We chose a warm cherry wood laminate.

We are going with Formica laminate 180FX brand in Antique Mascarello with a beveled edge. We are not positive on paint color, but are thinking along the lines of Benjamin Moore Butter or a very pale yellow with a wine color accent above the cabinets, etc. Backsplash, unknown....except that my husband wants to do something with stone and some glass tile?

I would pick a counter color that coordinates well with the floor as they are both horizontal surfaces. When you bring home samples lay them on the floor. "Beige" type shades can be tricky.

You might not like it if one "beige" turns out to have very gray/blue tones, and the other brown/pink, so the counter and floor end up looking BLUE and PINK.

Make sure you get them together first in your kitchens light.

kitchenaddict--thanks so much for attaching the photos. It does look very similar. I wish the countertop was a laminent so that I could copy off it. I think it looks really nice and have trouble visualizing it all put together. The taupe does look pretty also. I wonder if that is the better way to go instead of the "yellow" family. I am just afraid to pick something that is too blah and everything just looks dull together.

biochem101-- thanks for the advice. I agree that is probably the best thing to do because even though sometimes things looks similar, once you put them side by side they can bring out the wrong colors in each other.

Another suggestion to help figure out paint color is to go to the Benjamin Moore site. They have some neat features. They also have the large paint chips once you narrow things down. Then get that from the store and place all your items together. As mentioned above, make sure your under tones are correct. Taupe sounds the way to go here-the cabs and floor seem COOL rather than warm-I'd stay away from yellow.With taupe/beige you'll find lots of various shades and intensity. Stainless or satin nickel hardware will really look great.There are many wilsonart and formica counters to blend with your choices so far.You're moving along well...

I would go with the soft yellow as suggested. Taupe and beige are so widespread that there will soon be a backlash.... I'd try for something that does not look like every display kitchen in the store. It can be pretty, but it is tough to get into a trend late in the game because you will make your new kitchen seem older.
Laminate counters come in any color or style, so you will have a lot of freedom to choose. I'd pick the counters and coordinate the paint after.

Taupe is such a broad name for a colour. You really have to be careful with the undertones because they can be pink, green or yellow depending on which of the grey/brown mix is stonger.

remember that the color on the screen most often looks different than it does in real.

you can get larger laminate samples from Formica and Wilson Art thru their websites. Wilson might charge a 1.00 - but it's worth it. I got several different ones when I was trying to decide. It makes a difference seeing a larger section than those 2x3 samples from the store.

get the samples and put with a piece of your flooring and a sample of your cabinets.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Things are coming along, but we are having trouble finding a nice yellow paint. They are too bright or too orange. Why don't things ever look like the paint card?

Farrow and Ball "Cord" is a lovely complicated yellow that would be beautiful with your cabinets.
