Sinks double vs single & name brand vs store brand

I hope this is not a repeat topic for you guys but I couldn't find anything on this subject with the search functions. :)) I am really torn between the double bowl sink and the super single style. I love my current sink which is an extra large 1 and 1/2 made by Americast. It was a cheap sink but has been a workhorse and very functional. I really liked it. So here we are putting a new kitchen in at our new home and I would like to have the composite granite sinks. I like the look of the store brand Pegasus at Home Depot, love the shape...although it is not as large as my current sink, and it does not come in a reverse layout. My dishwasher will be on the right in the new house and I do not want to drip water over everything that may be drying in the small side of the sink as I load the dishwasher. Next I looked at the Blanco at a fixture store, once again I love the granite but it also does not come in a reverse. The sales person showed me the Blanco Precis Super Single and I am not sure if I could function with just a single bowl. So my questions are:

1. Pegasus (I believe it is made by Blanco) quality vs Blanco Silgranit

quality. Big Box store vs fixture store?

2. Double bowl vs single bowl, thoughts, loves, dislikes?

3. Anyone have the diswasher on the right side of the 1 1/2 sink layout? Like

or dislike?

And finally.....anyone like the sinks with the low spillway? I think there is a

Swanstone sink that I have seen that I like the way it looks. ( love the curves)

Sorry for the LONG POST I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the decessions that need to be made for the new kitchen.! Help! :))

I'm not sure I can answer all of your questions correctly so I will just say what was my very recent experience.

I too, compared the store brand to the Blanco that was on display in the kitchen section. I liked the "feel" of the Blanco better.

I priced the Blanco silgranit sink at Lowe's...(they would special order it )and it was quite a lot more than what I could purchase it for online. (approx. $200 more)

I got the 60/40 sink. My DW is on the left. The large bowl is on the left. The smaller bowl with my garbage disposal is on the right. I would have preferred it to be in the opposite postion, but it wasn't available that way at place I was ordering it from. So I am living with it and it is not really a big deal for me.

Personally I prefer a double bowl...but I know there are many on this forum who prefer the single. I like to have a sink for washing and a sink for rinsing/draining/disposing of stuff etc...

Ditto Kitchen addict. I like the 2 bowl idea as well. I usually have a sink of soapy water going while I'm cooking so the smaller side I use for cleaning vegs, rinsing etc. My GD is on that side too. When I started looking this time I wanted the same config...I know it may seem weird but, I wanted the "stuff" where it was before LOL Like the DW on the right side w/ the big sided sink. I"m sure I would get used to anything but, some things I wanted to stay the same.

I am going with a Ticor sink from Galaxy.. haven't gotten it yet. Cary, have you looked at their website??

I looked at the Silgranit sinks but, all the displays were very scratched...even tho everyone says they don't scratch. The day I took my dishes into the store to check out DW's... great idea from GW !!;)... I drug my dishes across the bottom of the sink and it did scratch. Then after more thoughts decided I needed SS to go w/ my kitchen.
Who knew picking out a sink would be so mind boggling ???

In an ideal world, two separate ovens mounted side by side at the same convenient for you height, properly insulated, and spaced a suitable distance apart. BUT Several years ago, a gardenweb.com participant whose name I can't remember now, built just such a dream kitchen using the best advice and equipment available on a dual oven layout and still got shafted by the "high end" equipment maker's lack of "help". So, a double oven, or a single oven, or a speed oven, or a microwave oven, or a range, in any combination you like. Just keep your fingers crossed.

I love my double wall oven, but as I have said here before and regulars are probably sick of hearing, mine is really old and it has french doors, which are the best thing a wall oven can have. You can go right into the oven or next to the rack without leaning over a hot door. If you can afford $6500 (I can't), American Range makes a lovely stainless double wall oven with french doors. Frigidaire makes a side-swing door oven that can be stacked to make a double, but it only comes in black or white and it's 27". Fagor makes a side-swing door oven, but it's really small. There aren't any other choices I know of. Since I have to accept a drop-down door, I'm looking for full-extension easy-glide racks, so I don't have to reach so far over the door and into the oven to lift out heavy things. Stand next to the open oven in the store and mime pulling out a turkey, and you'll see what I mean. Also, bring your turkey pan with you to make sure the interior is big enough. I currently use my second oven as a warming drawer, by setting it to "warm" or 150. I don't often cook two things in my top (bigger) oven, and I do use both ovens on some weeknights (think meat or fish in one oven, roasting veg or oven fries in the other). Some people like to have the second oven be a speed oven with microwave, then you can get rid of your microwave elsewhere. GE Advantium and Miele are two speed ovens discussed in other threads. Something to consider in choosing an oven is the self-cleaning issue, also discussed in other threads. Kitchenaid has a great-looking electric double oven with a capacious interior, but many people have had problems with the self-clean cycle. I read similar comments about some Kenmore models on the Kenmore site. Having had one for over 20 years, I am definitely choosing a double oven. Then again, I never had a warming drawer. I'm leaning toward the Electrolux, mainly because of recommendations I've read here. Hope that helps!

Rachelellen, I had to laugh when you specified crackers. :) I bought some house brand crackers last month and I think I know know why they were so cheap --- there was not ONE whole cracker in the entire package. (They tasted "eh...ok".) Back when we had the store, I used to get trade mags that often covered the politics and econimics of private labelling. Trust me, stores aren't carrying house brands out of concern for your wallet. It's a very lucrative area for them. Some products with different names are identical -- for example, Best Mayo on one side fo the county is Hellman's on the other. I don't know why. And, yes, private label products are made by some of the same companies that make similar/same brand names; however, that doesn't always mean the product is the same. Hunts might sell it's excess manufacturing capacity to Kroger or WalMart to create a house brand of product, but they do not always (or often, even) use the sam formulations. There may be more/less spices, more/less liquid to solid ration, less quality ingredients. I find most house brand diced tomoates taste fine, but there is less "meat" and more liquid than my favortie brand name comparable product. On the other hand, I don't like a lot of carp in my canned beans, so I'm happy with the house brand I buy because it has NO HFCS (why do you need that in beans anyway?), salt or other "stuff" in them. (Yes, I could use dried, but I'm lazy sometimes.) it's hit or miss. I'll buy a single unit of something and try it, but if it doesn't pass muster, I go back to my tried-and-true. What I do NOT like is the stores trying to force me to buy house brand by decreasing the space allowed for brand names. Yes, they make a bigger profit on house brands (in spite of the lower consumer price, they do make more or they wouldn't be doing it), but I want a choice.

I like to point out a simple fact. FLOORING is the MOST ABUSED 'finish' inside the home. The only thing that takes MORE abuse is the ROOF. If you have a $50K roof line, then feel free to spend roughly the same amount on the flooring. Roofs should last 25 years. That's why we pay so much for them. A floor (or finish on a wood floor) *should last the SAME AMOUNT of time. That's why we pay so much for them. Think of ALL the floors that do NOT make it 25+ years. They are all cheap. Carpets that are 25 years old are considered DISGUSTING. They are considered 'builder favourites' because they are CHEAP and EASY to install. That's why builders love them. Laminate floors (entry level to mid-grade = $0.79/sf - $1.99/sf) are 'disposable' floors and will offer 10 years before they look really bad. They are in the same category as carpet. Disposable floors that are cheap and cheerful...for a small amount of time. A low-end engineered hardwood ($4.99/sf at LL) is much the same as an entry level laminate. Your expectations should be 10-15 years....just like laminate. If you want a floor that will offer 25 years of service (wood floors can go MUCH longer but they need refinishing to do this = HIGHER GRADE = MORE MONEY) you need to work in a HIGHER price bracket. I like to ask people: How do you feel about redoing/refinishing your wood floors in 15 years time? For today's investment of $7/sf (not including labour) do you EXPECT more than 10 - 15 years? You shouldn't. That's entry level stuff. How about 'upping' the price to $12/sf? Would you expect 25 - 60 years worth of life? You should...because the $12/sf price SHOULD get you a wood floor that has the ability to be refinished AT LEAST once (20 years + 20 years = 40 years). If you purchase carefully, you can get 2 refinishes out of it = 60 years. A sand/refinish = $5/sf. Compare that to a 'rip out ($2/sf) and replace ($7/sf)' cost of $9/sf (not including installation). Now you really see the difference. How much did you pay for your roof? Going cheap on a roof NEVER works out. Now compare how much you are willing to spend on your floor. Going cheap on flooring is the same thing as going cheap on a roof.

We recently installed a Pegasus sink in my MIL's kitchen and she loves it. It is 16 gauge, with a larger sink on the left and small disposer sink on the right. The price was right and the quality good.

We installed a s/s farm sink (Bates & Bates) in order to get rid of a pull out drawer in our existing cabinet but if that terrible drawer hadn't have been there, I would have gone for another large/small double combo. I miss having another small sink. If I had room for a prep sink, it may have been different but after six years, I still miss that small disposer sink.

Everyone tried to talk me out of a single bowl. The
plumber, my DH, My cousin, a few friends.... They thought
I was silly to want just one sink. But who is the one who
cleans up? Me. I wanted a simple one bowl sink, super deep
that could hold a turkey roaster pan and hide dirty
dishes. I chose a non flashy SS sink by Oliveri.
I did not buy a sink from the big box stores. Because
my sink came from the counter installers.

I can not comment on the the type of sink because I chose
a SS but I used to have a Cast Iron Kohler. I LOVED it.
I have heard good things on GW about the silgranite sinks.

The Pegasus granite sinks at HD are made by Blanco on the same production line as all the rest of their silgranite ones. They also have different configurations available via special order if you can find anyone in the kitchen department that knows about ordering from the Your Other Warehouse catalog.

We have a HD Pegasus fauxgranite single (33") in black and like it a lot; it is easy to clean, looks great and takes a beating (we are hard on stuff). It also came with 2 built in cutting boards and a colander. I clean all my paintbrushes in there and a little BKF or Comet cleans it all up nicely. I looked at Blanco and could not see a lot of difference, but I'm a miser and we had a tight budget, so spending that much $$ on a sink wasn't an option.

Highly recommend the Pegasus. If you search on my name you will see pics of the sink installed in wood counters, undermount, DW to the left of the sink (we're left handed).

ETA:

We like the single, it's large enough for the canner and can easily hold a pan for the soapy water and have enough room to rinse. We try very hard to conserve as much water as possible, and were concerned that a single bowl might impact that, but it works well.
