Found my backsplash!

I'm deep in love. These Mexican tiles match the caesarstone "buttermilk" on the adjacent island perfectly. (Cabinets are dark brown horizontal grain in our modern rustic build). Now can I stop dreaming about kitchen finishes, please?

That's beautiful! Are the stars inset? Just thinking about dust, grease etc. I think they would be worth it though :)

:P. Guess I'm being superstitious. Seems like every time I get excited about an idea something / someone comes along and it becomes no longer workable / desirable / whatever. So anyhow, Saturday am Hubby was showing me the new window trim and I realized that the white that he's been looking for is the white of our trim that we both love. It looks amazing against the purple. Mind churned. I remembered that there's people out there with plain painted backsplash areas and some with beadboard backsplashes. Bingo: Let's do a painted wood backsplash. Not beadboard (too busy) but hardwood, routed to match our cabinet doors, painted the white that we love, probably with a few simple embellishments. Simple, inexpensive, customizable. I plan to do something really special / fancy for behind the stove (maybe interchangable somethings). If we get tired of it and/or do eventually find that perfect tile (perhaps in a few years when we have the budget for something more fancy), it'll be easy to replace or change.

Here's what the beveled tile looks like. I love this style. Island, the collection is called Victoria Ivory & shockingly the cabinets are from Cabinets To Go. I know CTG doesn't get much love here. To be honest, I was very nervous about ordering these cabinets just because of the reputation of Chinese cabinets but they really are a nice quality cabinet & finish. We didn't order through CTG but our kitchen contractor uses the products in his business. I've been very surprised & relieved when I've been taking the door sample into the tile showrooms the compliments I've received about the quality of the door. Wow, you guys are fantastic. This is really helping me narrow down choices about how to lay the tiles and to define what I like and what I don't like. I do like George and I think he should come and can with me today. I also like the seamless look of the all 3" sq tiles in George's kitchen, with the window balanced with the valance and the clock. My husband would be a hard sell on the idea of tiling the whole wall, he really dislikes it. I also really like the image that deedles posted at 21:49 with the small tiles on the bottom and the square tiles on the top with the green liner tile. It felt pretty peaceful to me. My husband likes deedle's 22:20 image with the bigger squares in both areas separated by the liner. I do not think I like the tile up to the beam behind the hood only- and I thought I would. I think that it accentuates the lack of symmetry on the wall. I wish I could go look at tiles today but the garden calls. And the saying "make hay while the sun shines" exists for a reason.

kateskouros - that is so great. I have been debating about using those exact tiles from lowes (can't beat the price!), but was dying to see what they'd actually look like. LOVE it, you guys did a fantastic job. I think I just found my backsplash. One question for you though : my cabinets are a creamier white actually called Pearl...do you think the tiles read too stark white? The sample I have from Lowe's seems to have some creams mixed in... Thanks! Enduring - I love the herringbone...I may try to do herringbone over the range area only, but it looks tricky and I'm an amateur diy -er.

Yes, the stars are inset. The backslash is for a stretch of counter that will be used primarily for making coffee, tea, secondary sink for washing veggies, etc.- so mess there will be minimal and I can get away with a high relief backsplash.

It's a very open kitchen layout with two 9ft islands that run perpendicular to a wall (with the above bs) that's anchored at one end by ovens and the other end by fridge, with counter in the middle. Cooktop, main sink, primary prep and baking areas are on the islands.

But how will you keep life's gunk out of the recessed areas?

Yep, it will mean some maintenance, that's what old toothbrushes are for.

I'm not in love with cleaning, so I'm careful about what I'm willing to do for beauty. (and aside from the more modern vibe, that's why I went with slab doors, I dislike cleaning the life gunk from the inset on inset doors.)

The thick smooth glaze will help, but this will be the one non-low maintenance thing.

That is really cool tile! Like you said, so long it's not in a area where it will collect grease, it should be fine. A soft bristled brush and some soapy water and it's good as new :)

1 -- I adore them, please tell me where you found them! They're fantastic!

2 -- Make sure you have a very experienced tile guy if there any cuts/corners involved. I had a bathroom with a tile that was very dimensional, and I ended up directing the guy on cuts and lining everything up. He hadn't work with that kind of tile before, and really struggled in wrapping it in the corners.

Can't wait to see the finished product.
