30' farmhouse sink with insikerator and draining issues?

Hi All,

We have been using our new 30" single bowl sink with an insinkerator garbage disposal for less than a week. So far, we are having real issues with the speed at which it is draining. It takes a really, really LONG time for water to run down the drain, and if we have the tap running at anything more than a dribble, water starts to accumulate in the sink, which is a pain, as it makes it really hard to rinse things down the drain.

We have never had a waste disposal before - is this normal or could something be plumbed incorrectly?

We have a 30" single bowl sink with an insinkerator. We do not have this problem. I think something is not right.

You need to run a disposal basically every time there is an accumulation of food particles, so after major prep or major cleanup, and always before you run the DW. You should run water (I've always known hot, but some say cold) for several seconds to a minute or two (depending on how far the chopped-up food has to run horizontally under your floors before hitting the outflow pipe). A slow disposal is often because there are some food chunks in there that you forgot about.

If this is definitely not the case, then I'd say that something is plumbed wrong or blocked underneath. You should notice no flow difference between a sink with or without a disposer.

Thank you all so much! I don't know what the heck to do. As I said, my cabinet base has been cut for this sink. My cabs are Decora...cream with a rust glaze. It is interesting that this sink WAS a floor model from my local plumbing supply. I ordered a sink back in Feb., and the lady at the store said no problem getting one even after I had mentioned the backlog problem to her. Well, sure nuff, three weeks later when my sink had not come in, she called the distributor and found out about the backlog. That's when she said I could have the floor model...so I jumped at it. I'm assuming now the hold up in the 30 inchers is over. Is that right? Anyone know anymore about why there was a problem in getting the sinks to begin with? I think I heard is was a problem with the mold. Any info on that would be appreciated. I could call the store tomorrow and see if they have gotten another sink in...or see how long to get another one. But, my cabinet has been cut for THIS sucker and I can just imagine how off it might be with another one. And whose to say a new sink would drain any better. I think it's just the luck of the draw. And sadly, we were going to the granite fabricator tomorrow to see the templates on the stone. He said he would be ready to install on Wednesday. We were finally gettin this granite show rolling. Now this. But, ya know, I do like the look of this big, fat, round baby in my kitchen. I just don't think I would like to start all over and go with a "non" farmhouse sink. I've even considered that idea. Somebody slap me up side the head and tell me what to do! Isn't it amazing what weenies we can turn into with this kitchen cr*p! TIA.

I got my Shaw's (Rohl) sink online at a really good price from Home and Stone. I bought many things from them and they were just fantastic, even when there were problems (Manufacturer's fault, not theirs). It's beautiful, but we were just talking today about how it's a bit annoying that due to the fact that it's handmade, it doesn't slope perfectly to the drain and it takes a bit more effort to clear and clean it. They tell you up front that your sink cab must be templated onsite after you have the sink as there is up to 2% +/- variation since it's a handmade product. I am doing a very Victorian kitchen, so it's worth it to me. The Rohl sink is different from some others because it's fireclay, not enameled. Very different and far more durable.

My Rohl Shaws farmhouse fireclay sink with left drain was just installed and I LOVE it. Mine is biscuit, but it comes in white. I got a 1 hp insinkerator and an XL flange. No tips, since I haven't used it yet, but it's so pretty. Note, I heard that a small percentage of the Shaws come with the drain on the right and there is no way to know in advance if that is what you're going to get. Mine was on the left, but I didn't really have an opinion about it.

Look at overstock. There may not be a specific grid with Franke on it but they have a LOT of grids and one might be the right size/shape for you. I bought mine there even though the drain hole isn't in the right place. It works just fine and I saved $75 by not buying the specific grid for my whitehaus.

Thanks for the feedback. We have not used the food disposal at all yet - still putting food waste in our green bin, so I am pretty sure it is not food waste that is 'stuck'.

Grrr- we have had so many plumbing issues! The guys roughed in our shower head at EYE LEVEL. Duh? Hello - didn't you notice that you were not standing UNDER the shower, but rather looking straight at it!

There are a few easy DIY places to check if you're so inclined. Turn the disposal off at the breaker first.

-Pull the rubber flange out of the bottom of the sink. You should easily be able to see around most of the interior cavity to make sure nothing is down there. And FYI, this is a good thing to do periodically in the future, both to check the cavity and to rinse off crap that might be stuck to the bottom of the rubber flange.
-The hose from your DW into your disposal should have a wire clampy thing over the rubber hose over the inlet part. Pull that off and see if there is any blockage at that point. Wait, have you even run your DW yet? If not, never mind.
-Check the P trap; perhaps something is stuck down there? You know, nuts, bolts, rolls of PTFE tape... :)

Anyway, it's at least something to check while you wait to get a plumbing appt, which probably won't be until after the long weekend, unfortunately!
