Are you saying my bathroom tile layout is a shame? As I said, the house is 120 years old. Many major corrections were made for things being out of square, level and plumb but at certain places it just wasn't possible because wall thicknesses for windows and doors had to be maintained. That wall is the back wall behind the toilet. Here is another shot. Please, tell me how this would drive you nuts, unless you spend a hell of a lot more time bowing before the porcelain god than I do. That's pretty much the worst spot in the entire bathroom. A slightly less bad spot (out of square by a quarter inch across 6'6") will be behind the freestanding tub. Everything else is really remarkably square given the age of the house and what we started with. Sorry for the slight distortion, it was taken with a wide angle lens. The three sides that you can actually see without being on your knees with your head in the bowl are perfect. Tile guy has now come back and spent a couple of days meticulously cutting individual tiles to fill in around the edges of the room. I don't have an updated picture as the majority of the floor is under paper and it hasn't been worth it the time to take new pictures. The first pic posted was taken before grout. I used mapei warm grey on the floor as well - I prefer the more subtle outline of the pattern. Maybe before you insult someone else's bathroom you should take the time to understand what you're looking at.

As glad posted, we used gray grout, but I'm not sure what kind or what color. The tile guy just presented me with the choices and I picked one. I didn't write down what it was. I used flat white subway tiles in the upstairs bedrooms and the first tile guy I had grouted it white (after I had repeatedly told our builder I wanted gray grout). To me, it looked terrible. To me, the pattern is the point of the subway tile and if you don't use a contrasting grout the pattern is lost. Needlesstosay, the tile guy had to dig out all the white grout and start over. We had a new and much better tile guy by the time we got to the kitchen and the laundry.

Everyone is mentioning epoxy grout or unsanded grout. What is the difference? Which is the best? Unsanded grout is the more conventional of the two. It's basically portland cement, pigment, and dry polymers to give it strength.it's the normal grout used in grout joints under 1/8" in size. Epoxy grout is just as the name implies. It's epoxy based, and is tough as nails. Epoxies make several claims. They claim to be more color fast than normal grout. They claim to be alot more stain resistant than normal grout. They claim to be much stronger than normal grout. In all three cases, the claims are valid. However, in residential installations, with the exception of maybe countertops, it's my feeling that epoxy grouts are bigtime overkill. Common sense in picking grout colors will go just as far. In addition, epoxy grouts are about 4 times as expensive as conventional grouts, and if you're having a pro do the installation, there's usually an upcharge for grouting with epoxy. Personally, depending on which epoxy, I'll charge 1.50 to 2.00 a foot more just for grouting with epoxy, because it's that much more difficult to use. One other thing to think about-- if you decide to go back to the white grout, you definitely don't want to use the epoxy. Because of the color of the epoxy resin, white epoxy grouts tend to take on a yellowish hue. Also, you talk about using hex tile-- the choice is then epoxy or SANDED grout. Otherwise you'll end up with a grouting nightmare, due to pin holes and shrinkage. Trust me on this.

I found this zombie thread very helpful. Thanks for updating with your more recent fresh corpses! I think I'm using a 1/16th grout line in my bathroom. It looks way better (IMO).
