To mix cabinet colors or not to mix cabinet colors...

We had originally thought that we would make the hood and cabinets below the induction cooktop a darker wood color than the rest of the cabinets. Is this look still trending? After the cabinet guy asked us about it again, we hesitated. What are your thoughts on a one color in most of the kitchen, and hood and bump out below a darker color? I thought it was a no-bainer but now I'm confused. Appliances are stainless. No island, but we have a pretty good sized penisula open to the family room.

Don't you hate when they do that? Just when you make up your mind, ey question you in a way that makes you question yourself. My GC and my DH are the WORST......

If you believe it looks good, do it. I don't know anything about trends, sorry.

Our island will be Antique White cabinets, and the rest of the cabinets will be a Java (almost black). The granite will be the same on all. I know it typically is reversed, the white on all and the dark on the island, but I was worried the white would be too yellow, so we did it on a smaller part of the kitchen. It may be trendy, there are a lot of different colored cabs in kitchens on Houzz, but go with what you like!

Your kitchen sounds gorgeous. There are several images on google that have exactly your selections- cherry cabs, beige/white tiles, walls that must be similar to your champagne and Santa Cecilia granite which I am familiar with and love. But.... isn't there always a but.... I am stumped as to why you would bring in the sage green and a second granite. IMHO adding a 2nd granite of an entirely different color would take away from the beauty of each of them and be dizzying to the eye. If it were my kitchen I would think of using an antiqued champagne for the island with the same SC granite on top of the island. You have a beautiful color palette going with the white, beige, gold, black, and cherry. I'm sure the sage you are thinking of is beautiful, but sometimes too much is just that- too much.

I don't see anything wrong with doing what you are proposing. Maybe, just to set that hutch area off a bit more, you could get some brackets installed on either side underneath the uppers? Would you use glass in the doors of the hutch, too?

Not sure if this helps or not, but we're doing a mix of stain and creamy cabinetry in our kitchen, the trim is SW creamy throughout the house EXCEPT in the study which is stained. We have french doors to the study that are stained on both sides and they are the only stained doors in the house. Our built-ins are the same SW Creamy as the trim, EXCEPT the bead board in the back is stained, as is the mantle. Obviously, I love both stained and painted wood so it was important to me to have them both. In your situation, I can't see why it wouldn't work to have a white kitchen and stained cabinets in an adjacent room. I think the key is to find a way to make the white kitchen warm, since stained wood is naturally warm. Just my very unprofessional 2cents :-) Here are some pictures of our house (in progress). Nancy... so right! I hate it when they do that and DH is also be blame! First he says... do what you want. then when final sign off is here... ummm, "you think that will look good?" Grrrr!

I'm usually a Pacifist... but now I'm close to "passing a fist" right though his face! Just a little joke I saw on Facebook. LOL. Trying not to let this project get to me.

drewem, your kitchen sounds like it will be a winner. If I had an island, I'd probably do something similar.
