I posted a message on another forum but not much activity over there. Most of the messages are just sitting there from other posters.

Hi all
I am a regular on kitchens and appliances but new to this forum
We have a 40 x 12 foot deck - it is not rectangular but 2 offset rectangles (center is 40 feet long-so one deck if that makes sense)
It faces west.
I looked into sun sails- but don't think we can make them work - not enough attachment points on our 4 foot elevated deck.

I was initially going to go with umbrellas- but large ones and offset -cantilever style- are pretty expensive.

We had a local awning company come out yesterday to give a quote on a retractable awning

We are looking at a motorized version.
We would put the awning just on one side- but it will be relatively large -19x10 roof mount. Our house is 2 story but this section is one story vaulted.

He did not recommend the wind sensor as you lose the manual crank over ride.

The awning will cost more than the umbrellas but hopefully better coverage.

I found some old threads but nothing recent.
Is this a good idea?

Other ideas?

I've got the Southern/western sun with the same problems.
37' x 16'.

I have nothing to offer, but will be watching! :)

CEFreeman - but I bet you will find the best bargain around!
Pricey but may be easier than umbrellas in the long run

Apparently you are involved in a project which needs a building permit. If you are not, there's no reason why you would need to do anything to your older steps (even though, if they are similar to the photos, they do not meet current building code requirements). If you do need to add code-compliant railings, probably the easiest solution is the one suggested by palimpsest, i.e., new posts, handrail and pickets, with the posts anchored to the stair treads, adjacent to the stair pilasters. The stair railing itself could be made from a variety of materials--wood, steel, reinforced PVC, etc. Choose whatever matches the rest of the exterior details of your house. Here are the new Permacast porch columns, installed this afternoon. I had ordered them on Aug. 13th, and waited and waited and then told they were on a two week back order. Finally they came in and then waited a week for the lumber yard to deliver them to my house. Called contractor twice but he never returned my calls. I found out this morning that he had been on vacation in Colorado! Good thing he called, I was going to give him the rest of this week and then I was finding someone else. ha. I think the columns look great. NO pitts, NO cracks, No seams. I was going to hire a painter but since they look so good and contractor didn't even recommend sanding, I'm going to do it myself. The only thing is they didn't countersink the screws that went in under the caps. Some were sunk better than others but he said he was afraid to tighten too much for fear the material would crack. I suppose I can fill them over with a bit of caulk before I paint. Probably be the only person who notices. Anyway thought I'd post an update. So far, I'd recommend this product to others. However, we'll see after painting how well the paint holds up to weather,ect. Thanks for all the input while I made my decision.

Thanks Jeri! Our floors are quartersawn white oak, 4" boards. We love them and though they do have scratches from our 2 active dogs, they still look great! Now if they were only the same color as their fur, that would make them perfect! Kat :)

Thanks cpartist for the suggestion. I may do that - I didn't think of going there but it does get quite a bit of traffic. I just bit the bullet and went to DH with my concerns about the width of the steps. I took our cooler out and showed him how tight it would be to bring that up and down. He did not argue, but instead suggested a possible way to fix it - even though we would have to buy more decking boards to replace the ones running along the edge that were already notched to the old posts. And possibly more boards for the wider steps as well. It does put the brakes on this project for the time being, and we also agreed to hold off on the walkway until we get the deck steps corrected - DH agreed to re-cut the stringers to allow for consistent risers. So unless he changes his mind, it looks like I will be able to get everything corrected - even though it will cost time and money, I think is worth it. And its times like this when I remember why I married him... All is good for now.... until then next hiccup!

We installed the sunsetter retractable awning about 20 yrs ago. Not motorized back then. It has served us well; our rear deck gets too hot/sunny till about 4pm. Would do again without hesitation. Check eBay too; I think that's where DH scored ours. It was a little cheaper, I think, a slight reject (stripes at fold over edges weren't perfect; could only see that from 2nd floor looking down into awning).

What about a pergola? You can grow roses, wisteria, or vines on it that would give you seasonal shade and a little cover from light rain etc...

I was just going to suggest a pergola. While building a deck off our kitchen, DH realized how hot the deck was going to be. DH decided to cover part of the deck in a pergola. We mocked it up with boards to see how much shade it would give us. It's not done yet so I can't tell you how it is working.

Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant-past, I was a landscaper and purchased a Bulldog tarp for the purpose of covering plants and tying down trees during transportation. Not only were they effective and gentle with the plants the woven design permitted air to flow through them and not blow away during a highway trip.

What this means to YOU is that once I delivered a tree to a friend and she said "What a great sun shade this would make!" And she is absolutely correct! The subtle multi-color, tough grommets and fairly tight weave make for a great shady spot in all but the harshest sun conditions.

It is expensive for a "tarp" but incredibly inexpensive for a shade cover of similar quality and marketed as a home improvement product.

Mags and EAM44 - I think we will build a Pergola on the south part of the deck. EAM - what type of wood did you use and did you have someone build it - the tricky part for us is the deck is off the ground by about 3-4 feet. Your Pergola is beautiful.

If you can visualize a 40 foot deck made from 2 rectangles - so one part of the deck sticks out 4 feet further than the other - there is not a height difference and the boards on the main part are contiguous.

I went down the neighborhood looking at ideas - a few have retractable awnings - 2 pergolas, and the rest were basic umbrellas.

We have this other problem - the squirrels think they own the deck. They sit up in the trees and pee and poop on whoever is on "their" property. LOL - so for our sitting area - we do want something that gives another form of protection.

Greenhaven - I bet that is where sunsails originated - from tarps. Same basic issue with the deck being elevated, the attachment points become problematic as you need enough tension to keep it from collecting water.

I am sure most of us have experienced this issue when camping - Stepping out of the tent and getting avalanched with the water from the outer tarp. LOL

Anyone else out there have retractables and like them. We picked out a color that coordinates with the house but I am thinking we need more color or it might look too tent like.

We have a retractable awning and think it's great. It is motorized but we've only used the manual crank (the kids love to operate it). Ordered through Costco years ago. Good luck!

Now to figure out how to build a pergola.
I showed DH the picture and he liked it

Oh, and I scrubbed the deck
It looks so much better
