Please help me pick a counter top. Down to the wire

For reasons I won't bore anyone with I've recently had to change my perimeter counter tops from a cream color to a chocolate with ebony glaze. My island will remain vintage onyx. Because of the change I'm having difficulty visualizing counter tops on the new color scheme. Could anyone suggest a granite for the space or provide me with some pictures? I'm getting down to the wire and need to make a decision soon. To complicate matters the builder has suggested doing the island top in a different color.

We went to a granite yard yesterday and the builder liked colonial cream perimeter with mascalzone on the island. I liked it but I'm looking for that "I love it" moment. Am I wrong for wanting that?

We are doing something similiar in our new build kitchen. The perimeter cabs will be a java color (almost black) and our island cabs are an antique white sheer. The granite will be the same on both, it's Santa Cecilia. Eventually (read 5-8 years) it will be changed to Bianco Antico. The builder cannot get BA for me, and won't let me put it in on my own before settlement. So we choose something that will work for now.

What is your budget? Do you have pictures of the space? Do you have a backsplash you love or do you have pictures from websites of looks that make you say "I LOVE this"? There are THOUSANDS of granites out there. Also budget is a huge one when picking stone.

maxiepines, I didn't follow your thread about cook tops so maybe someone already mentioned this. A downdraft set within a gas cook top pulls at the flames. This isn't an issue with your old electric cook top - no flame. I have a pop-up downdraft for my island's gas cook top. Even though it rises 7" above the cook top, it pulls the flame when turned on high and even on medium, it pulls on the back burners' flames more than I'd like. The downdraft blew out (would that be sucked out?) a burner when it was on low a few times. Today's gas cook tops generally come with automatic re-ignition, which is good, because the only way I know this has happened with my old cook top is when I smell gas. Anyhoo, a downdraft set at the same level as the burners will do this even more than my 7" pop-up does. Can you add a pop-up downdraft, preferably one of the newer models that rises more than 7" above the cook top instead? Stunning photos, as usual, boxerpups. You rock!

for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO. cypress park Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem. However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail. these are porcelain/SS, and treated so as not to stain or tarnish. I LOVE these for your kitchen. timeless and gorgeous. They are probably not super cheap, but it would be worth it for me. http://www.miusartmosaics.com/arabesque-lantern-beacon-copper-tile-in these would also work. the site is here: maybe they have them in stock.http://www.westsidetile.com/arabesque-tiles/ i like this one too. notice the copper faucet. beautiful w/the glass mosaic. if you got the cream countertop, this would look amazing w/your floors. this last one is a copper colored slate/quartzite.

“What do you think of off white or gray with my cabinets?” Hi Barbara, I don’t think that particular gray is a good idea. May we please see images of the entire space that include your floor? Do you have any inspiration images you can share with us? They can be incredibly helpful. Just google images of kitchens with oak cabinets and show us a few that you like. Here are a few I’ve found.

Take several samples home. Look at them in every light--morning, daytime, night. If you have them, place the door samples (or wood colors) near them.

We had three samples, and were surprised at the one we picked--but it was the clear winner by the end of the day.

We used Mascarello on our bar. I considered it for my black kitchen - it's the only warm granite I've ever totally fallen in love with - mostly I'm a cool color person.

Have a look at African Ivory granite. I think it would look lovely with your new plan. Of course all slabs are different so hopefully there will be some in your area that are really pretty. I like the ones that have a lot of cream along with all the other gorgeous colors in it.

the cabinets are earthy and really distinctive:I'd consider soapstone or a honed granite in a quite dark shade-not much movement. Spend more time on the backsplash-that would be more important to the overall feel considering those cabinets.

Thought I'd share pictures of my kitchen because our cab colors are very similar. At least it gives you an idea what a darker, busy granite would look like. I think the Mascarello that 35ftcabo posted above would look lovely. Mine is Magma Supreme.

Still waiting on paint and the BS but done otherwise.

Thanks so much for the replies. For those interested this is a new construction so there's not much for photos. The kitchen will be L shaped with a 4x7.5' island. I'm not sure on my budget for the stone but I believe I can go up a bit in price if need be. Right now I'd say mid range is my price point. I appreciate the photos poohpup and the input gr8day and herbflavor. I was considering something leathered with not a lot of movement for the perimeter and maybe something wilder on the island. Any more pics that anyone has to share would be greatly appreciated.
