Did you choose Matte or Shiny White Subway Tiles

Hello All,

Our kitchen is done with the exception of a backsplash. We are down to one final decision - matte or shiny? Our cabinets are pure white shaker cabinets with antique cambrian black counters - so there is no shine. So - do I go with matte white subway tiles or shiny?

What are your thoughts - is one easier to keep clean? Does anyone have pics of matte subway tiles - it seems like most chose shiny?

I chose shiny and they are going up as we speak. I have brushed absolute black counters on the perimeter and slightly polished carrara marble on the island. I didn't want matte tiles against the matte AB, plus I liked the way the shiny subway tied into my island counter. Hopefully I'll be posting finished pics soon!

We're also trying to find the right tile for our shower, since we're currently redoing the master bath and will later need to tile the shower in the guest room. For some reason tile is the one thing I can't seem to decide! We may split the difference and go with shiny in the guest room, which is more traditional/white, and go with a matte natural stone in the master, since it's more of a rustic spa feel. Maybe you can have it both ways and do the same? :) Good luck!

pattisue-oh I love leathered with some color and movement. That looks AWESOME. Old house we had polished stone and did a matte slate backsplash. Liked it This house I have leathered stone and I am doing a polished/gloss splash. I think the contrast will be nice. If you haven't had leathered before oh I do love it. Have you seen tiles or pictures that you like? Try to find some pics and see if that helps you make up your mind.

Looks great! I am the worst at picking tile and I think they all look great so go with your gut... I did the white on white look and it was so white I ended up doing grey grout to balance it out. I think a grey tile probably would have balanced the counter better but I fell in love with that white herringbone I ended up doing. I also picked a matte tile and kind of wish I had picked something with a glossier finish for some more sparkle. Your choices look like they will do that and have more dimension. Good luck!

we have leathered (honed?) absolute black perimeters and in each of the three bathrooms the island is butcher block and we love it no fingerprints, stuff (crumbs, flour etc) does show but clean up is easy and looks great i've had a very high end granite with lots of movement and i don't clean up any more now than i did then and i disliked it a lot......i wouldn't choose a "shiny" finish for the island but i'm not going to say it wouldn't be attractive... bil has absolute black (shiny) and it is difficult to keep looking nice...

I guess mine would be matte (?)..they are smooth but I wouldn't say they were shiny. My counters are so shiny. I preferred the contrast of the matte againist the shiny granite. As far as cleaning them, I just wipe it down about once a week with hot soapy water. They are not pitted so there isn't any dirt getting trapped in holes.

We did glossy ... soapstone counters are matte, and polished marble island is shiny, so it was similar to the others' desire for both contrast and similarity.

Anyone have any thoughts on using shiny white or bisque subway tiles with silestone quartz in the stellar rose. My family thinks it will be too stark against the pattern of the counter which has a deep rose, oatmeal and recycled glass which appears silver. I say anything other than shiny white or bisque will clash. I would use kahlua cream grout to unify the counter and tile.Any thoughts would help.
